This book examines sixteen methods of philosophical inquiry and treats each as a working procedure rather than an object of historical study. The methods considered are the dialectical, metaphysical, hermeneutic, and analytical; the deductive, empirical, phenomenological, and materialist; the idealist, rationalist, critical, and existential; and the pragmatic, historical-philosophical, dialogical, and deconstructive. For each, the book sets out the theoretical commitments it presupposes, the operations it performs, and the kinds of questions it is equipped to address, together with those that fall beyond its reach. The central claim is that method is not neutral with respect to content: the procedure adopted determines which questions can be formulated and, consequently, which answers remain available. The argument proceeds in two registers. In the first, the methods are examined comparatively, as competing accounts of what philosophical work consists in. In the second, they are applied to practical deliberation—to decisions concerning conduct, trust, and the shape of a life—on the view that such deliberation already proceeds methodically, though usually without the agent having consciously chosen the method.
