The other: feminist reflections in ethics (edited book)
with Helen Fielding, Hiltmann Gabrielle, and Olkowski Dorothea
    Palgrave-Macmillan. 2007.
The western philosophical tradition, with its focus on universal concepts and a presumed neuter, but ultimately male subject, has only relatively recently become open to the question of alterity, in particular the alterity of woman as the other of man. The essays of this volume reflect in particular on the ethical implications of taking the feminine other into account. This necessitates a rethinking of the implicit structures of Western philosophy which continue to exclude women as subjects who …Read more

The essays of this volume reflect in particular on the ethical implications of taking the feminine other into account. This necessitates a rethinking of the implicit structures of Western philosophy which continue to exclude women as subjects who contribute to the conceptualization of world and society. In this paper, three types of resentment are distinguished: individual resentment, collective resentment and ressentiment. It is argued that individual and collective resentments differ from ressentiment not only in their relation to facts and reasons but also in their general aim: collective resentment expresses felt injustices and aims at societal change whereas ressentiment is an attitude of carrying a …Read more
Expressing resentment is an important way of interpersonal, social, or political critique. In this paper, three types of resentment are distinguished: individual resentment, collective resentment and ressentiment. It is argued that individual and collective resentments differ from ressentiment not only in their relation to facts and reasons but also in their general aim: collective resentment expresses felt injustices and aims at societal change whereas ressentiment is an attitude of carrying a grudge and wanting revenge. Collective resentment and ressentiment mark distinct ways of relating to the world and to others and entail different views of society. The conceptual distinctions between varieties of resentment can help to identify and evaluate public expressions of anger.
