Im Anschluss an die kontrovers, aber zunächst nur englischsprachig geführte Debatte erschien nun der erste deutsche Sammelband zu diesem Thema. Jan G. Michel, Kim J. 94Towards a common framework of grounded action cognition: Relating motor control, perception and cognitionCognition 146 (C): 81-89. 2016.The relation between motor control and action cognition – including action-related thoughts and action- related perception – has been subject to controversial discussions in the last three decades. During these decades, cognitive neuroscience has been increasingly confronted with a huge variety of different accounts trying to understand and explain the relation between these systems, their interdependencies and the mediating mechanisms by establishing notions such as ‘‘internal models”, ‘‘simula…Read more

168Grounding Action RepresentationsReview of Philosophy and Psychology 3 (1): 53-69. 2012.In this paper we discuss an approach called grounded action cognition, which aims to provide a theory of the interdependencies between motor control and action-related cognitive processes, like perceiving an action or thinking about an action. The theory contrasts with traditional views in cognitive science in that it motivates an understanding of cognition as embodied, through application of Barsalou’s general idea of grounded cognition. To guide further research towards an appropriate theory o…Read more

21Trivial, Platitudinous, Boring? Searle on Conceptual RelativismIn Jan G. Michel, Dirk Franken & Attila Karakus (eds.), John R. Searle: Thinking about the Real World, De Gruyter. pp. 143-162. 2010.In this paper we explore Searle’s defense of conceptual relativism. It emerges that Searle formulates the thesis in many different ways and that contrary to his contention not all are trivial and platitudinous. Specifically he does not distinguish clearly between an ontological and a linguistic version of conceptual relativism as well as between weak difference and stronger incommensurability of conceptual schemes. This has consequences for Searle’s defense of external realism.
