Die antike Philosophie kennt die Philosophie des Geistes nicht als eigenständige Teildisziplin. Was sich der heutigen Philosophie des Geistes zuordnen ließe, ist in der Antike Teil einer viel weiter gefassten philosophischen Lehre von der Seele. Auch die Bezeichnung ‚Psychologie‘ ist mit Vorsicht zu behandeln. Der griechische Ausdruck für Seele ist „psychê“; allerdings ist „psychê“ nicht mit dem Geist (engl. mind) gleichzusetzen. Die Seele ist nach antiker Vorstellung das Prinzip des Lebens schlechthin und wird häufig als das Unterscheidungskriterium zwischen Belebtem und Unbelebtem angesehen. Am besten lässt sich die antike Beschäftigung mit der Seele als ‚allgemeine Lebenswissenschaft‘ (‚general life science‘) bezeichnen. Die antiken Vorstellungen von der Seele lassen sich schematisch anhand von drei zentralen Aspekten sortieren, die teilweise zusammenhängen, aber nicht deckungsgleich sind: (1) Monismus/Dualismus, (2) Sterblichkeit/Unsterblichkeit, (3) Körperlichkeit/Unkörperlichkeit bzw. Materialität/Immaterialität der Seele. Der Beitrag stellt entlang dieser drei Aspekte die Positionen von Platon, Aristoteles sowie der Epikureer und Stoiker dar.

If one focuses on the Republic, it seems plausible to classify Plato’s ethical outlook as impartial, both in terms of its structure and in terms of its content. The aim of this paper, however, is to examine whether—and if so, to what extent—Plato can equally be regarded as a pioneer of an ethics of partiality. To make a case for this view, I will mainly focus on the case of filial piety in the Euthyphro and the Crito and the treatment of friendship in the Lysis. In the Euthyphro, we are faced with a clash between a paradigmatically impartial view (represented by Euthyphro) and a position that allows partial rules of action (represented by the relatives, and presumably by Socrates). The rationale of the partial position defended by the relatives is grounded in the priority of filial piety, a position that we also find in play in the Crito. Filial piety exempts sons from the moral obligation to correct injustices and permits them not to prosecute their fathers for murder. In the Lysis, we find another possible justification of partial relationships, in particular in the context of a discussion of parental love. I will argue for the thesis that although friendship is always grounded in utility, utility does not fully explain friendship. At least three clarifications and additions are necessary: (3.1) It is necessary to determine more precisely what is meant by utility in each case (this will turn out to be important for distinguishing noninstrumental forms of utility); (3.2) the fact that something is useful to me does not necessarily mean that I have been lacking something; and (3.3) there are forms of philia that have different and more important grounds than utility, and one might understand these as moral grounds.

Die vorliegende Studie zeigt, dass Aristoteles eine originelle Konzeption der Zurechnung entwickelt, auch wenn er noch über keinen Ausdruck für Zurechnung verfügt. Die Frage nach der Zurechnung ist zu verstehen als die Frage danach, (i) unter welchen Bedingungen und zu welchem Grad Handlungen einem Akteur als seine eigenen Handlungen, für die er (moralisch) verantwortlich ist, zurechenbar sind und (ii) inwieweit ein Akteur auch für seine Dispositionen, die seinen Handlungen zugrunde liegen, verantwortlich ist. Aristoteles’ Konzeption ist innovativ, weil er Willentlichkeit weder als notwendige noch als hinreichende Bedingung für Zurechenbarkeit erweist und weil er nicht nur Handlungen, sondern auch Dispositionen, die Handlungen zugrunde liegen, als Zurechnungsgegenstände auffasst. Die Studie macht die Vielschichtigkeit und Graduierbarkeit des aristotelischen Zurechnungsbegriffs sichtbar, indem sie die Konzeption der Zurechnung auf besondere Arten von Handlungen wie z.B. plötzliche Handlungen, Handlungen aus Zorn (thymos) oder akratische Handlungen anwendet. In systematischer Hinsicht stellt die Studie Bezüge zu Gegenwartspositionen her und zeigt, dass die aristotetelische Position auch für aktuelle Debatten anschlussfähig ist.

In a notorious passage of the Politics Aristotle denies women a place in the political sphere on account of the fact that the deliberative part of a woman’s soul is akuron, here translated as ‘without authority’. Drawing on Nicomachean Ethics I.13, the paper shows that Aristotle’s moral psychology provides the basis for the deficiency in deliberation that he ascribes to women, as well as slaves and children. One result of this is that, although women can have virtues, this is true of them in a rather different sense than is true of mature, non-slavish men. Since women lack the type of practical wisdom needed for political life, they have the virtues characteristic of those who should be ruled, not those who should rule. However they do exercise a restricted sort of practical wisdom, such as is needed for success in the domestic sphere.
