He holds master's degrees in mathematics and philosophy (University of Amsterdam), and a PhD degree from the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (Amsterdam). De Bruin held visiting positions at Cambridge University and Harvard Business School, among others, and is a Life Member of Clare Hall (Cambridge).
