Brent Silby teaches Philosophy at Ao Tawhiti Unlimited (secondary school) in Christchurch, New Zealand. He has published papers in various journals, and has self published a wide range of articles of Philosophical interest. Brent's primary research interests include: Philosophy of Religion, Stoic Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, and recently, Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics with particular interest in the artistic and aesthetic value of the performance of a DJ Mixset.
In 2016 Brent completed his certification in Logic Based Therapy through The National Philosophical Counseling Association. Logic Based Therapy is a technique used in Philosophical Counseling and aims to use the methods of Philosophy to help people work through life problems. It is primarily based on Stoic Philosophy.
In addition to teaching, Brent is currently working on his PhD in Philosophy at the University of Canterbury.
Brent's goal is to open Philosophy to a wider audience, hence much of his work can be described as 'Cafe Philosophy'--interesting, highly accessible articles pitched at intelligent people with no specific background in Philosophy. Brent is on the executive committee of NZAPT (New Zealand Association for Philosophy Teachers), working with colleagues to raise the status of Philosophy teaching in Secondary Schools.
