Philosophy is an activity, not a discipline. Philosophy is far from pointless; it is one of the more important activities a human can do. Philosophy is alive in the hearts of nonacademics more than in the hearts of academics. Anyone that tries to trap you in a philosophic 'debate' that has no stakes or consequences in the world is a jerk. (Since it is not always easy to tell when this is happening, try to be polite.)
