Unlike most species of animals, dogs appear to be potentially consenting and enthusiastic participants in human-animal sexual relations. This has led utilitarian philosopher Peter Singer to argue that some forms of bestiality do not involve cruelty and are morally acceptable. This chapter builds on feminist critical animal studies critiques of utilitarian approaches to animal ethics to show the inadequacy of a utilitarian analysis of human-canine sexual relations, and of zoophilia more generally. Highlighting the power relations involved in domesticating dogs, as well as the gendered (male) and racialized (white) nature of the zoophile phenomenon, this chapter argues that a more nuanced and intersectionalist understanding of the forms of coercion involved in human-canine sexual relations is needed. Such an analysis suggests that zoophilia—most often manifested in human-canine relations today—is not so much a sexual identity or a paraphilia, but part of what feminists have described as a rape culture.

The essays in Fanon and the Decolonization of Philosophy all trace different aspects of the mutually supporting histories of philosophical thought and colonial politics in order to suggest ways that we might decolonize our thinking. From psychology to education, to economic and legal structures, the contributors interrogate the interrelation of colonization and philosophy in order to articulate a Fanon-inspired vision of social justice. Focusing on Foucault's work on “infamous men” and the “dangerous individual,” this chapter argues that there are other instances in Foucault's oeuvre in which he is similarly insensitive to violence against women, although these cases have drawn less critical attention. The two‐fold aim of the chapter is, first, to examine what is at stake for Foucault in his writings on infamous men and dangerous individuals whose infamy and dangerousness involved violence against women, and, second, to problematize Foucault's failure to attend to gendered power relations in these texts. Foucault's most sustained consideration of a monomania diagnosis concerns the case of Pierre Rivière. The chapter argues that some of the aspects of existence that Foucault fails to see in his dogged focus on what he reads as agonistic medical‐iegal battles and power relations between men include the family, gender relations, the victimization of women and children, suffering, and love.
