Born and raised in Germany, Christian Wenzel pursued studies of mathematics, physics, philosophy, and fine arts at the universities of Würzburg, Bonn, and Wuppertal in Germany and, in the United States, at the State University of New York at Albany and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1990 he received his PhD in mathematics, with a dissertation in algebraic geometry, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA).
