According to the Gradualist Dutilitarian Project, the moral theory that we have most reason to adopt in order to make progress in moral philosophy emanates from a conjunction of two claims: (1) Dutilitarianism, the claim that what makes an action right or wrong depends on both consequences and deontological concerns; and (2) Gradualism, the view that moral rightness and wrongness come in degrees. Peterson’s argument for the Gradualist Dutilitarian Project is based on the Conditional Rescue Claim, which states that if you believe in Dutilitarianism, then you ought to believe in Gradualism — because Gradualism is necessary to make Dutilitarianism internally coherent when faced with a challenging result developed within an Arrowian framework. I will argue that the argument for the Conditional Rescue Claim fails. By carefully distinguishing between two ways of individuating theories, as well as between theories and classes of theories, the apparent incompatibility between the Arrowian result and the guiding idea of Dutilitarianism (as being a compromise) disappears.

Consequentialism is a focal point of discussion in moral philosophy, although it is unclear what, exactly, consequentialism is. Taking seriously the idea that “consequentialism” is a term of art in moral theorizing that has been shaped in response to objections against utilitarianism, this chapter retraces the debate on consequentialism in section 1.1. It shows that (a) a trend to design consequentialist theories at increasingly higher levels of abstraction has triggered an emerging new wave consequentialism which is extremely flexible and characteristically associated with a “resort to abstraction” and a “turn to reasons”; and that (b) the concept of consequentialism itself has become increasingly general by incremental conceptual emancipations from certain characteristic marks. Section 1.2 explains the structure of the volume, summarizes the essays, and outlines the relation between them. By identifying emerging topics for further exploration, section 1.3 provides a brief outlook on the prospects of new wave consequentialism.

Henry Sidgwick gilt im englischsprachigen Raum als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der utilitaristischen Tradition und als einer der bedeutendsten Moralphilosophen überhaupt. Die Rezeption (die im deutschsprachigen Raum – relativ zu anderen Utilitarist:innen wie auch absolut gesehen – eher spärlich ausfällt) konzentriert sich dabei meist auf sein Hauptwerk The Methods of Ethics (ME). Um diese Schrift und die Impulse, die von ihr für die Ideengeschichte des Utilitarismus und für die Entwicklung der modernen Moralphilosophie ausgingen, besser verstehen und würdigen zu können, ist es wichtig, die ME in ihren biografischen Zusammenhang einzubetten, ihre Rolle in Sidgwicks philosophischem Gesamtprojekt darzustellen und zeit- und ideengeschichtlich in der britischen Moral- und Sozialphilosophie des 19. Jahrhunderts zu kontextualisieren.

Einer gängigen Vorstellung zufolge ist der moralische Standpunkt ein unparteilicher. Wie passt das dazu, dass Altruismus als besonders edle, dem Egoismus entgegengesetzte und über Unparteilichkeit hinausgehende moralische Gesinnung gilt? Dieser Beitrag untersucht das Verhältnis von Altruismus und Unparteilichkeit genauer. Innerhalb eines Rahmens zur Repräsentation praktischer Deliberation kann man zwischen formaler, struktureller und substantieller (Un-)Parteilichkeit unterscheiden. Altruistische Deliberation erweist sich darin als strukturell parteilich, wenn man sie konträr zum Egoismus versteht. Ein engerer Zusammenhang zwischen Altruismus und Unparteilichkeit hingegen ergibt sich aus einer Explikation, die der Tatsache, dass es einen selbst glücklich macht, andere glücklich zu machen, besondere moralische Relevanz einräumt. Altruismus steht dann in einem komplexen Verhältnis zum eigenen Wohl und zur Sorge um andere – ein Verhältnis, das vereinbar ist mit der Unparteilichkeit des moralischen Standpunkts.

Einer verbreiteten Auffassung zufolge schenkte Mill der utilitaristischen Tradition mit der Unterscheidung zwischen höheren und niederen Vergnügen („pleasures“) eine begriffliche Innovation und stützte seinen Utilitarismus ganz wesentlich auf die daraus erwachsene Axiologie, den sogenannten ‚qualitativen Hedonismus‘. Dieser sei jedoch inkonsistent, intellektualistisch und – wegen des lexikalischen Vorrangs höherer Vergnügen – letztlich absurd. Dieses philosophiegeschichtliche Vorurteil ist in mehreren Hinsichten verzerrt. Es ignoriert den ideengeschichtlichen Rahmen, missversteht den Gehalt des ‚qualitativen Hedonismus‘ und überschätzt dessen systematische Rolle in Mills Werk.

Es ist ein Gemeinplatz, dass die Auseinandersetzung mit dem moralischen Intuitionismus ein Leitmotiv in Mills Werk ist und ihm persönlich viel bedeutete. So ist z. B. der Autobiography zu entnehmen, dass Mill im Intuitionismus seiner Zeit eine Hauptwurzel für gesellschaftliche Übel, schlechte Institutionen und vorurteilsbeladene Praktiken, kurzum ein großes Fortschrittshindernis sah, dem er mit seinem Werk (v. a. auch den theoretischeren Schriften A System of Logic und An Examination of Sir William Hamilton’s Philosophy) den Nährboden entziehen wollte. Demnach hatte Mill es sich zur Lebensaufgabe gemacht, die (aus seiner Sicht schädlichen) praktischen Auswirkungen des Intuitionismus einzudämmen, indem er dessen philosophisches Fundament attackierte.

There are two accounts of the normative foundation of intergenerationel business ethics, agent-variant theories and agent-invariant theories. Each of them faces a specific challenge: agent-variant theories have to deal with the inverse non-identity problem, while agent-invariant theories are vulnerable to the moral crowding-out effect. Both are particularly difficult to deal with within a reductivist approach that conceives of corporations as distinct moral agents whose responsibility cannot be reduced to the responsibility of either individual agents or higher-level institutions. This might be a reason to favour reductivist approaches in intergenerational contexts.

In this comment, we pick up three points raised by Ohndorf et al. (Clim Chang 133:385–395, 2015) in their reply to our ethical assessment of the German Advisory Council’s Budget Approach (WBGUBA). First, we discuss and clarify the relationship between ethics and political feasibility, highlighting that the way Ohndorf et al. use feasibility creates an unwarranted status quo bias. Second, we explain the proper place historical responsibility should have within the WBGUBA, stressing the fact that the reasons why we choose one policy proposal over another matter. Third, we analyze the limited extent to which a normative heuristic should motivate an ethically ambitious policy proposal like the WBGUBA.

According to the Budget Approach proposed by the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), allocating CO2 emission rights to countries on an equal per-capita basis would provide an ethically justified response to global climate change. In this paper, we will highlight four normative issues which beset the WBGU’s Budget Approach: (1) the approach’s core principle of distributive justice, the principle of equality, and its associated policy of emissions egalitarianism are much more complex than it initially appears; (2) the “official” rationale for determining the size of the budget should be modified in order to avoid implausible normative assumptions about the imposition of permissible intergenerational risks; (3) the approach heavily relies on trade-offs between justice and feasibility which should be stated more explicitly; and (4) part of the approach’s ethical appeal depends on policy instruments which are “detachable” from the approach’s core principle of distributive justice.
