Resilienz bezeichnet die Widerstandskraft die Kirchenvater sprachen in diesem Zusammenhang von der Kraft der Seele. Dieser Band versammelt 12 Beitrage, die eine interdisziplinare Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema der Krisenbewaltigung und der Schicksalsresistenz in Verbindung mit den Konzepten von Hoffnung, Handlungsfahigkeit, Selbsterforschung und innerem Wachstum aufzeigen. Betrachtet werden Zeugnisse, die aus den ersten funf Jahrhunderten des Christentums stammen, u.a. Leben und Werk von Antonius dem Grossen, Evagrios Pontikos, Johannes Chrysostomos, Augustinus, Gregor von Nazianz, Makros dem Eremiten. Anhand der patristischen Lehre werden Standpunkte und Modelle der Resilienzforschung diskutiert und weiters in einen Dialog mit der zeitgenossischen Philosophie gebracht. This article tries to reconstruct some key aspects of Pope Francis’s teaching on institutions, with the intention to show their relevance for an institutional ethics beyond the Catholic Church. The author sketches some of the key pillars of an ethics of institutions according to Francis. After an introduction, he offers some observations about the ethics of institutions, specifically the ethics of Catholic institutions. In a second step, he looks into the contribution of key Catholic social teaching documents to an ethics of institutions. Third, he reconstructs some moral challenges of institutions that have been identified by Francis, explicitly discussing “ecclesiological puritanism” and “spiritual worldliness.” The final section is dedicated to four key principles of decent institutions, according to Francis: the principles that (a) time is greater than space and (b) realities are more important than ideas, as well as the reference points of (c) synodal collaboration and (d) the value of mercy.

In this essay, the author describes the trajectory toward a just peace framework in contemporary Catholic social teaching, as well as similar trends in the broader Christian community. He articulates a refined just peace framework or process that has arisen from and within a pastoral approach that listens to the experiences and voices of people in conflict situations across various cultural spaces. He then turns to the recent and challenging case of the war in Ukraine to explore and argue for a just peace approach rooted in the praxis of accompaniment. The author also reflects on the distinction between and implications of an accompaniment approach and a justification-of-war approach to initiate more inquiry on this topic.

This volume presents philosophical contributions examining questions of the grounding and justification of taxation and different types of taxes such as inheritance, wealth, consumption or income tax in relation to justice and the concept of a just society. The chapters cover the different levels at which the discussion on taxation and justice takes place: On the principal level, chapters investigate the justification and grounding of taxation as such and the role taxation plays and should play in the design of justice, be it for a just society or a just world order. On a more concrete level, chapters present discussions of these general reflections in more depth and examine different types of taxation, tax systems and their design and implementation. On an applied level, chapters discuss certain specific taxes, such as wealth and inheritance taxes, and examine whether or not a certain tax should be favored and for what reasons as well as why it is just to target certain kinds of assets or income. Finally, this volume contains chapters that discuss the central issue of international and global taxation and their relation to global justice.

The Financial Crisis in Europe puts pressure on welfare states and its tax systems as well as on considerations of social justice. In this paper, we would like to explore the status of the idea of progressive taxation and its justification (especially the ‘ability-to-pay’ principle) in times of a financial crisis. We will discuss it within a social justice framework following David Miller—using the principles of (i) need, (ii) merit, and (iii) equality. We will conclude that progressive taxation can be justified in the light of these three principles, even more so in the situation of a financial crisis that undermines decent living conditions for millions. The principle of need has to be given priority even if this move violates the principles of equality and desert.

This book explores the philosophical, and in particular ethical, issues concerning the conceptualization, design and implementation of poverty alleviation measures from the local to the global level. It connects these topics with the ongoing debates on social and global justice, and asks what an ethical or normative philosophical perspective can add to the economic, political, and other social science approaches that dominate the main debates on poverty alleviation. Divided into four sections, the volume examines four areas of concern: the relation between human rights and poverty alleviation, the connection between development and poverty alleviation, poverty within affluent countries, and obligations of individuals in regard to global poverty.

Wie kommt es, dass die Freiheit im Selbstverständnis der meisten europäischen Nationen eine so große Rolle spielt? Welche Traditionen haben das unterstützt, welche behindert? Dieses Problemfeld, das von großer Aktualität ist, wird hier von renommierten Theologen und Philosophen dargestellt. Die Freiheit des Einzelnen und das liberale, tolerante Zusammenleben im Respekt vor der Freiheit anderer musste erst philosophisch begründet werden, bevor es politische Realität werden konnte. Die Grundlagen dieses Prozesses und der damit verbundenen Probleme zu verstehen, ist zentral für jeden zeitgeschichtlich interessierten Menschen. Zum ersten Mal wird die Entwicklung der europäischen Freiheitsidee hier im Zusammenhang gewürdigt.

Das Buch entwirft eine Ethik theologischen Denkens - wie soll die Theologin, wie soll der Theologe "denken" und "nachdenken"? Wenn es der Theologie um Gott zu tun ist, ist theologisches Denken wesentlich auch Begegnung mit Gott. Das Buch arbeitet mit 49 ausgewahlten Bibelstellen, die eine Begegnung mit Gott zeigen; diese werden erkenntnistheoretisch gedeutet in der Absicht, Anhaltspunkte fur eine theologische Erkenntnisethik zu erarbeiten. Dabei folgt dieser Entwurf "theologischer Landschaftsskizzen" der Struktur des Vater Unser, das die grossen Konturen der Begegnung zwischen Mensch und Gott vorgibt. Das Buch legt einen Dialog zwischen philosophischer Erkenntnistheorie und biblischen Texten vor, wobei ein weites Spektrum philosophischer Stimmen zur Sprache kommt. Theologisches Denken, so die These, unterscheidet sich von anderen Formen des Denkens durch seine Zweite-Person-Perspektive, durch seinen Glauben an Gott, auf den hin gedacht wird. Theologie ist nicht nur Denken uber Gott, sondern auch Denken vor Gott und Denken auf Gott hin. Daraus ergeben sich normative Strukturen fur die theologische Reflexion, also eine besondere Erkenntnisethik. Ein Stachel im Fleisch theologischen Denkens ist Jesu Kritik an der Erkenntnisarbeit der Gesetzeslehrer: Ihr habt den Schlussel (der Tur) zur Erkenntnis weggenommen. Ihr selbst seid nicht hineingegangen und die, die hineingehen wollten, habt ihr daran gehindert (Lk 11,52). Es ist schon viel gewonnen, wenn theologisches Denken der Begegnung mit Gott nicht entgegensteht. Nach der Weisung, nicht vom Baum der Erkenntnis zu essen, steht nun die Aufforderung, durch die Tur zur Erkenntnis hindurchzugehen. (Aus dem Vorwort)

In this article, the authors articulate the question “From where do we speak?” They explain the status of this question and then discuss the question “From where do the authors of the document Justice in the World speak?” They identify four reference points: a pneumatologic commitment, a perception of injustice, a belief in the Gospel basis of action on behalf of justice, and a recognition of self-involvement. This part of the text has been written by Clemens Sedmak. In the second part, they ask the question: “From where do we speak now?” After a few remarks on the climate crisis and the sexual abuse crisis, they focus on “the wounded sociality” of the present day. They explore the relationship between justice and this wounded sociality, taking the categories of social friendship and fraternity as points of reference (from Pope Francis’s encyclicals Laudato si’ and Fratelli tutti), and enter a conversation with three authors: Michael Sandel, Teresa Godwin Phelps, and Paul Ricoeur. This section has been authored by Mathias Nebel.

Die philosophische Forschung zu Fragen der Armut hat zuletzt auch im deutschsprachigen Raum zugenommen. Im Fokus stehen dabei zumeist Fragen der Ethik und politischen Philosophie, etwa jene danach, worin das moralische Übel der Armut besteht oder nach der individuellen, kollektiven und institutionellen Verantwortung gegenüber Menschen in Armut. Die Aktualität der Armutsfrage ist dabei unbestritten sowohl im Hinblick auf ihr globales Ausmaß und die teils verheerenden Folgen für die betroffenen Personen als auch im Hinblick auf das Politikum Armut in entwickelten Wohlfahrtsstaaten. Das Ziel des Handbuchs ist es, den aktuellen Stand der philosophischen Forschung umfassend abzubilden. Dabei werden nicht nur die klassischen Fragestellungen der politischen Philosophie und Ethik behandelt, sondern auch jene aufgegriffen, die bislang weniger intensiv diskutiert wurden. Das betrifft etwa ethische Fragen der Armutsforschung oder die Verhandlung der Armut in den verschiedenen historischen Epochen und Strömungen.

How can universities promote a preferential “option of the poor”? In my chapter I will articulate three dimensions and show how they are connected with issues of identity: education, positioning, transformation. (i) Education is the central idea of a university. Education can strengthen the abilities to deal with difficult situations, like poverty. In fact, the university has the opportunity and the responsibility to cultivate such resources. According to Martha Nussbaum a university should promote the ability to lead an “examined life”. It should promote the ability to think in terms of common humanity and the ability to narrative imagination, such as the use of myths, symbols, narratives and poetry. In this way education helps to cultivate a sense of belonging that is not contingent of social groups (humanity), a sense of detachment from external circumstances (“examined life”) and a sense of interiority and orientation beyond material values (narrative imagination). (ii) Universities can contribute to an “option for the poor” by taking up positions. There are at least four important dimensions: First, the university recognizes academic freedom. Universities are free to address the situation of people experiencing poverty and poverty alleviation, e.g. in lectures. Second, the university knows freedom of research. Hence also research can contribute to a deeper understanding of poverty and the development of social innovation and poverty reduction efforts. Third, universities build communities of teachers and students, networks within the scientific community. Granting access to such networks for socially disadvantaged students or teachers or collaboration between the University and poverty stricken persons can express an “option for the poor”. Fourth, the University has political weight and can take up positions in the sense of Ignacio Ellacurías considerations on the political role of universities. (iii) Finally, such a positioning and consequent involvement offers opportunities for transformation. Transformation is in fact the basic idea behind the Christian understanding of an “option for the poor”. It is about to be touched by the mystery of poverty. It is about to develop real friendships with people experiencing poverty. Such encounter opens the scope for a transformation that converts people’s interiority. This may just be possible within a university.

In recent studies it has been possible to apply new approaches in philosophy, especially of linguistic philosophy, to exegesis of the writings of the New Testament. Utilizing Wittgenstein’s model of language games, the following study of the meaning of the (apparently hidden) speech in the most difficult book of the NT, the “Book of Revelation,” reveals that the seer John does not speak of hidden events in the future but intends to point the addressee of his writing to a new Christian existence already in the present world. For baptized believers the symbols of his visions become signposts, on the basis of which they would understand and act in their present world. The final motif of Revelation, God’s gift of the “New Jerusalem,” is therefore not only a symbol of the fulfillment of the history of theworld, but in the first place a real description concerned with the present, perhaps even a prescription of conduct for the Christian communal life in a non-Christian world. This result is reached in consideration of (a) the pragmatic dimension of the language act that is emphasized in the language game, and (b) the rule-laden character of a game, in which is winning is intended. In this way, the author and content of Revelation is seen in a new, not previously considered way. In the end John does not only say what will happen, but also what has to happen, i.e., what Christians are to do—or not to do—in the world, in order to overcome it and to contribute to its transformation.
