Since Kant, theories of subjectivity seem to revolve around what David Carr, following Husserl, calls the paradox of subjectivity: that the I is both a subject for and an object in the world. This paper reexamines two attempts to address this problem, emerging at the intersection of Neo-Kantianism and phenomenology – Richard Hönigswald’s ‘Denkpsychologie’ and Wolfgang Cramer’s ‘Denkontologie’. Both seek to concretise transcendental subjectivity without relinquishing its unconditional claim, by conceiving the I as both principle and fact. Yet they arrive at different results. Hönigswald’s monadological account remains largely neo-Kantian in treating subjectivity as the concrete ground of the validity of judgments, whereas Cramer reinterprets the ‘I think’ as an expression of transcendent knowledge, advancing toward a transcendental ontology and speculative metaphysics of subjectivity. I conclude with a reassessment of Kant’s critical idealism as an adequate response to the paradox of subjectivity.

This paper argues that Kant’s transcendental idealism provides a systematic foundation for the idea of Enlightenment through the logical form of infinite judgment. Focusing on its employment in the Transcendental Aesthetic, I reconstruct Kant’s proof of transcendental idealism and respond to the so-called neglected alternative, according to which space and time could be both forms of intuition and properties of things in themselves. The paper shows that this alternative rests on a misunderstanding of the universal validity of judgments about space and time. Such judgments are valid universally precisely because they express the limits of human cognition. The infinity of space and time must therefore be interpreted as the result of a self-limiting judgment, one that affirms its own conditionedness and, in doing so, excludes the thing in itself from its formally boundless domain. On this basis, I conclude by reconsidering Kantian Enlightenment as a form of self-critical universalism, modelled after the Transcendental Aesthetic: a set of claims that secure their legitimacy by expressing the limiting conditions of their validity.

The article explores Wolfgang Cramer’s argument for the transcendental reality of time. In his 1957 Grundlegung einer Theorie des Geistes, the Post-Neokantian claims to revise Kant’s theory of time in order to resolve the alleged key problem of transcendental philosophy: How consciousness is able to relate to the constituted object (Gegenstand) of our representations as a non-object (Nicht-Gegenstand). While reconstructing the core argument of Cramer’s transcendental ontology, I will argue (pace Cramer) that Kantian critical idealism already presents a solution to said problem: de-ontologizing the nexus between time and thinking. Nevertheless, Cramer’s transcendental ontology manages (perhaps involuntarily) to highlight a central, yet still widely neglected aspect of Kant’s theory of time—its speculative relevance. ——— Der Beitrag untersucht Wolfgang Cramers Argument für die transzendentale Realität der Zeit. In seiner Grundlegung einer Theorie des Geistes von 1957 beansprucht der Post-Neukantianer, Kants Theorie der Zeit zu revidieren, um das angebliche Grundproblem der Transzendentalphilosophie zu lösen: wie „das Bewusstsein in seiner Konstitution des Gegenstandes den Gegenstand als Nicht-Gegen­ stand […] wissen“ könne. Indem das Kernargument von Cramers transzendentaler Ontologie rekonstruiert wird, soll (gegen Cramer) dargelegt werden, dass schon der kritische Idealismus Kants eine Lösung auf das besagte Grundproblem darstellt. Sie besteht darin, den Zusammenhang von Zeit und Denken zu entontologisieren. Gleichwohl bringt Cramers transzendentale Ontologie (wohl unfreiwillig) einen zentralen, aber immer noch weitgehend vernachlässigten Aspekt der kantischen Theorie der Zeit zur Geltung – deren spekulative Bedeutung.

Philosophie im Sinne Adornos bedeutet, die Traditionslinien der Dialektik und der Kritik miteinander engzuführen. Diese Engführung erfolgte bislang vor allem gemäß der Vorgabe Hegels – mit dem Resultat, dass das Profil einer dezidiert negativen Dialektik durch Identitätsdenken überformt und in der Forschung als mangelhafte Kopie der positiv-spekulativen Dialektik gehandelt wurde. Dagegen schlägt diese Arbeit vor, dieses Profil von Kant her zu sichten: Indem die Grundzüge von Adornos Kantinterpretation erhellt werden, soll deren systematische Bedeutung für das adornosche „Antisystem“ zur Geltung gelangen. Negative Dialektik, so die These, ist nur als grenzbegriffliche Reflexion auf den Erkenntnisanspruch der traditionellen Dialektik möglich.

Der Beitrag untersucht den Zusammenhang von Kritizismus (qua Heterologie) und Kritischer Theorie (qua Dialektik) anhand der Konstellation Rickert-Adorno. Heterologie und Dialektik werden von der Forschung bislang als gegensätzliche Methodenkonzepte erachtet. Dagegen soll gezeigt werden, dass Adorno diesen Gegensatz gezielt infrage stellen und sich auf das heterologische Denkprinzip berufen muss, um die dialektische Tradition zu kritisieren. Die These lautet: Bei Adorno bildet Heterologie den Sinnhorizont der dialektischen Negation. Sonst wäre die negative Dialektik eine positive Dialektik – die Kritische eine traditionelle Theorie geblieben.
