Obwohl viel zitiert, ist Kants Begriff der Unmündigkeit bisher so gut wie gar nicht untersucht worden. Das Buch füllt diese Lücke durch eingehende Beschäftigung mit Kants Quellen sowie seinem Logik- und Anthropologiecorpus. Wo Kants Zeitgenossen Aufklärung vorrangig als epistemische Kategorie verstehen, so die These, entwickelt Kant in seiner Anthropologie ein soziales Konzept von Aufklärung. Unmündigkeit und Vormundschaft bezeichnen nämlich eine Beziehung der Substitution des Vermögensgebrauchs, die ontogenetisch temporär notwendig ist, aber zur Implementierung von Abhängigkeits- und Herrschaftsverhältnissen leicht auf Dauer gestellt werden kann. Aufklärung als Ausgang aus selbst verschuldeter Unmündigkeit durch eigenständigen Vermögensgebrauch bedeutet daher immer einen Eingriff in soziale Beziehungen.

This contribution deals with judgement and prejudice as central constituents of community. In this regard, it re-evaluates Gadamer’s and Arendt’s interpretations of Kant’s Critique of the Power of Judgement and their own social approaches. The shared assumption that common sense and power of judgement are to be identified in Kant is contrasted with their different views on the nature of community, including different understandings of the social function of prejudice. Furthermore, it is shown that Kant himself develops a social philosophy that overcomes the concept of prejudice. First, Kant offers the power of judgement as an intrinsic ability to use one’s own faculties, which must always be acquired in social contexts. As a complement, he develops his concept of immaturity, which does not refer to an epistemic content or faculty, but to dependence as a social relation. The paper concludes with some remarks on a social theory of judgement.

Mit seinem Begriff der Aufklärung konterkariert Kant das Verständnis seiner Zeitgenossen. An die Stelle der Auffindung und Verbreitung wahrer Erkenntnisse sowie des Ausmerzens von Irrtümern und Vorurteilen setzt er den Fortschritt des selbständigen Vermögensgebrauchs der Menschen. Der Beitrag zeigt, dass Kant seinen Begriff der Unmündigkeit zwar aus dem Vorurteilsdiskurs der Aufklärung entwickelt, aber dabei eine Inversion ihrer Herrschaftsmetaphorik vornimmt. Die nur übertragen verstandene innere Herrschaft der Vorurteile der aufklärerischen Tradition kehrt Kant zur ganz tatsächlichen Herrschaftsbeziehung von Vormundschaft und Unmündigkeit um, und somit einen epistemischen Diskurs in einen sozialen. Diese Sozialphilosophie ist systematisch in Kants Anthropologie zu verorten, die sich nicht in erster Linie mit der praktischen Vernunft auseinandersetzt, sondern mit den faktischen Beziehungen von Menschen und dem Einfluss ihres Vermögensgebrauchs aufeinander. Die Unmündigkeit als ontogenetische conditio humana hält hierbei die systematische Erkenntnis bereit, dass Beherrschbarkeit ganz zentral mit der Temporalität des menschlichen Lebens zusammenhängt.

This contribution explores the political dimension of Schiller’s theoretical writings as well as his plays. Introducing into the basic theses of Schiller’s political approach in the context of his anthropological perspective, it is shown that the central concept of political change is character. Analogizing individual, people, and the species as a whole, Schiller posits aesthetic education as the central means for gaining the ability of self-determination in morals as well as politics. Therefore, the aesthetic is at the same time non-political (for it stands outside the sphere of government and aims at the moral character) and political (for the developing of character enables and authorizes for political self-determination). It is also demonstrated how Schiller deals with the French Revolution and the topic of tyrannicide.

This paper is about the opposite of judgement and calculation. This opposition has been a traditional anchor of critiques concerned with the rise of AI decision making over human judgement. Contrary to these approaches, it is argued that human judgement is not and cannot be replaced by calculation, but that it is human judgement that contextualises computational structures and gives them meaning and purpose. The article focuses on the epistemic structure of algorithms and artificial neural networks to find that they always depend on human judgement to be related to real life objects or purposes. By introducing the philosophical concept of judgement, it becomes clear that the property of judgement to provide meaning and purposiveness is based on the temporality of human life and the ambiguity of language, which quantitative processes lack. A juxtaposition shows that calculations and clustering can be used and referred to in more or less prejudiced and reflecting as well as opaque and transparent ways, but thereby always depend on human judgement. The paper clearly asserts that the transparency of AI is necessary for their autonomous use. This transparency requires the explicitness of the judgements that constitute these computational structures, thereby creating an awareness of the conditionality of such epistemic entities.
