This article argues that Ismail Kadare’s fiction extends our appreciation of Kantian Enlightenment as a worthy model of nonviolent resistance, especially under circumstances where free expression is constrained by political repression. Drawing parallels with Kant’s own navigations of Prussian censorship, it examines three literary strategies Kadare deploys under Albania’s communist regime—speculum principis, irony, and allegory—and argues that his example reveals two capacities essential to Enlightenment under non-ideal conditions: moral attunement and communicative wisdom.
