[The paper itself is in German.] In this contribution, I examine the entanglement of collectivity and normativity in musical practice, focusing on collective improvisation in Hot Jazz. My case study is based on the 1926 recording of »Gatemouth« by the New Orleans Wanderers. I illustrate how the improvisation characteristic of Hot Jazz is realized in ensemble playing, and I highlight that the musicians improvising togetherfollow genre-specific norms regarding instrumentation and playing style. I explore how the collective’s organization into roles as well as genre-specific norms (such as rhythm and harmony) facilitate and structure coordination. And I argue that the musical coherence of the synchronous improvisation by the Frontline instruments is only guaranteed by adhering to these norms and the reciprocal adjustment of playing. Finally, I use these findings to point towards general starting points for the analysis of collective phenomena.

Toleranz und Solidarität werden als solche praktische Haltungen zur Herausforderung für die philosophische Reflexion, insofern Akteur:innen diese Haltungen angesichts weitreichender Unterschiede oder Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen Lebensentwürfen und Grundüberzeugungen einnehmen. Allerdings wird in der Reflexion über diese Haltungen ihr Vorliegen nicht nur konstatiert, sondern sie werden unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen als moralisch gefordert, als Bezeichnung für Tugenden von Bürgern und politischen Praktiken oder als Vorzug eines politischen Gemeinwesens angesehen.

Raimo Tuomela’s work on collective action and social phenomena is extremely elaborate and well-engineered, it has matured and undergone numerous refinements over the last four decades, and it will continue to be a main point of reference in the debates surrounding the term “collective intentionality.” Already in the early 1980s, when – although this is somewhat speculative – only a handful of philosophers of action (not counting rational choice theorists) paid attention to the cognitive and intentional structures underlying cooperation, Tuomela and his immediate collaborators, originally especially Kaarlo Miller, embarked on the study of specifically social forms of intentionality, which lead, to mention just some of the highlights, to analyses of we-intentions, cooperators’ practical reasoning, social practices and institutions, collective responsibility, group agency and group solidarity. The breadth and depth of these analyses can hardly be reconstructed in one short commentary. Instead, in what follows I shall focus on the most recent statement of a centrepiece of Tuomela’s philosophical social theory and I shall seek to formulate a challenge to it that at least calls for further clarification. In particular, the following considerations centre on Tuomela’s account of acting as a group-member as it is presented in several chapters and passages of his Social Ontology: Collective Intentionality and Group Agents (2013, here cited as “SO”).

Improvisation gilt genreübergreifend als Charakteristikum von Jazzmusik, dessen Struktur zu verstehen eine zentrale Aufgabe der philosophischen Beschäftigung mit Jazz als künstlerischer Praxis ist. In diesem Beitrag analysiere ich, unter Verwendung grundlegender handlungstheoretischer Begriffe, insbesondere die Struktur der Interaktion zwischen gemeinsam Musizierenden. Ich argumentiere dafür, dass Interaktion bei Soloimprovisation ebenso eine Rolle spielt wie in verschiedenen Formen gemeinsamen Improvisierens und des Ensemblespiels. Damit wird ein Zugriff auf die Praxis der Jazzmusik entwickelt.

This volume brings together recent work by leading and up-and-coming philosophers on the topic of virtue epistemology. The prospects of virtue-theoretic analyses of knowledge depend crucially on our ability to give some independent account of what epistemic virtues are and what they are _for_. The contributions here ask how epistemic virtues matter apart from any narrow concern with defining knowledge; they show how epistemic virtues figure in accounts of various aspects of our lives, with a special emphasis on our practical lives. In essence, the essays here put epistemic virtues to work.

University of Cologne, Germany Joint action and group agency have emerged as focuses of attention in recent social theory and philosophy but they have rarely been connected with one another. The argument of this article is that whereas joint action involves people acting together to achieve any sort of result, group agency requires them to act together for the achievement of one result in particular: the construction of a centre of attitude and agency that satisfies the usual constraints of consistency and rationality in adequate measure. The main discovery in the recent theory of group agency is that this result is not easily achieved; no regular voting procedure will ensure, for example, that a group of individually consistent agents will display consistency in group judgments.
