Quantum-like non-separability of concept combinations, emergent associates and abduction
    with P. D. Bruza, K. Kitto, R. Ramm, L. Sitbon, and S. Blomberg
    Logic Journal of the IGPL 20 (2): 445-457. 2012.
Consider the concept combination ‘pet human’. In word association experiments, human subjects produce the associate ‘slave’ in relation to this combination. The striking aspect of this associate is that it is not produced as an associate of ‘pet’, or ‘human’ in isolation. In other words, the associate ‘slave’ seems to be emergent. Such emergent associations sometimes have a creative character and cognitive science is largely silent about how we produce them. Departing from a dimensional model of…Read more

Dynamically adjustable annular laser trapping for sperm chemotaxis study
    with B. Shao, S. Zlatanovic, S. C. Esener, J. Vinson, E. L. Botvinick, and M. W. Berns
A diameter-adjustable annular laser trapping system based on axicons was designed for sperm chemotactaxis and fertilizability characterization. Experiment on microspheres testified the feasibility and performance of the system and was consistent with theoretical expectation. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

Erythropoietin for neuroprotection in neonatal encephalopathy: Safety and pharmacokinetics
    with Y. W. Wu, R. A. la BauerBallard, D. M. Ferriero, D. V. Glidden, T. de MayockChang, D. J. Durand, S. L. Bonifacio, F. F. Gonzalez, H. C. Glass, and S. E. Juul
OBJECTIVE: To determine the safety and pharmacokinetics of erythropoietin given in conjunction with hypothermia for hypoxicischemic encephalopathy. We hypothesized that high dose Epo would produce plasma concentrations that are neuroprotective in animal studies. METHODS: In this multicenter, open-label, dose-escalation, phase I study, we enrolled 24 newborns undergoing hypothermia for HIE. All patients had decreased consciousness and acidosis, 10-minute Apgar score ≤ 5, or ongoing resuscitation …Read more

© 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved. Genome-wide gene expression measurements have enabled comprehensive studies that integrate the changes of gene expression and phenotypic information to uncover their novel associations. Here we reported the association analysis between psychophysical phenotypes and genome-wide gene expression changes in human adaptation to one of the most extreme climates on Earth, the Antarctic Dome Argus. Dome A is the highest ice feature in Antarctica, …Read more
