• The Skeptic's Attitude
In Mark Walker & Sanford Goldberg (eds.), Philosophy with Attitude, Oxford University Press. forthcoming.
What attitude does a radical skeptic adopt towards the philosophical views of his rivals? And what attitude does he adopt towards his own philosophical stance? This chapter addresses these questions with a focus on the ancient skeptics—both Pyrrhonists and Academics. I begin by examining their attitudes towards the philosophical views of their opponents. I then turn to their attitudes towards their own philosophical stances. Finally, I compare these attitudes with recent proposals in epistemolog…Read more

Sources of Doxastic Disturbance in Sextus Empiricus
In Victor Caston (ed.), Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy, Volume 56, Oxford University Press. pp. 193-214. 2019.
In his account of Pyrrhonism, Sextus Empiricus talks about the disturbance concerning matters of opinion that afflicts his dogmatic rivals and that he himself was afflicted by before his conversion to Pyrrhonism. The aim of the present paper is to identify the distinct sources of doxastic disturbance that can be found in that account, and to determine whether and, if so, how they are related. The thesis to be defended is that it is possible to discern three sources of doxastic disturbance and th…Read more

    Pyrrhonism, Inquiry, and Rationality
    Elenchos 34 (1): 201-228. 2013.
In this paper, I critically engage with Casey Perin's interpretation of Sextan Pyrrhonism in his recent book, The Demands of Reason: An Essay on Pyrrhonian Scepticism. From an approach that is both exegetical and systematic, I explore a number of issues concerning the Pyrrhonist's inquiry into truth, his alleged commitment to the canons of rationality, and his response to the apraxia objection.

    Disagreement and Skepticism (edited book)
    Routledge. 2017.
The thirteen essays in this volume explore for the first time the possible skeptical implications of disagreement in different areas and from different perspectives, with an emphasis in the current debate about the epistemic significance of disagreement. They represent a new contribution to the study of the connection between disagreement and skepticism in epistemology, metaethics, ancient philosophy, and metaphilosophy.

This chapter examines the reception of the thought of the so-called skeptical Academy, as expounded in Cicero’s Academics, within contemporary philosophy. This task is more complex than evaluating the reception of Pyrrhonian skepticism. While Pyrrhonism, as presented in the surviving works of Sextus Empiricus, has been the subject of considerable discussion among contemporary philosophers, Academic skepticism is rarely mentioned. Moreover, when it is mentioned, the ancient source cited is more o…Read more
  • Aporia
In Giuseppe Veltri (ed.), Encyclopedia of Scepticism and Jewish Tradition, Brill. forthcoming.
Judging by our extant sources, the notion of aporia played a significant role in ancient Greek philosophy, primarily in Plato, Aristotle, and ancient Pyrrhonism. This entry first briefly examines the meaning and use of that notion in Plato and Aristotle before turning to its role in Pyrrhonian scepticism.
  • Is Skeptical Inquiry Possible?
In Aaron B. Creller & Jonathan Matheson (eds.), Inquiry: Philosophical Perspectives, Routledge. 2025.
This chapter examines whether a radical skeptic can consistently engage in truth-directed inquiry, i.e., whether he can do so without holding beliefs of various kinds. For does he not believe that it is possible to discover the truth about the matters under investigation and that doing so is objectively valuable? Does he not believe that there is a correct way to conduct inquiry? Is he not doxastically committed, overtly or tacitly, to certain zetetic norms? Does inquiry not necessarily imply un…Read more

Outre une introduction et un chapitre conclusif, le livre consiste en quatre longues études : « Aristotle on Sign-Inference and Related Forms of Argument », « Rationalism, Empiricism, and Scepticism : Sextus Empiricus’ Treatment of Sign-Inference », « The Stoics on Sign-Inference and Demonstration », « Epicurean...

Skeptical Theism, Fideism, and Pyrrhonian Skepticism
    Bollettino Della Società Filosofica Italiana 242 (2): 7-29. 2024.
Is skeptical theism tenable once one acknowledges, as proponents of that view do, one's cognitive limitations vis-à-vis religious matters? In this article, I aim to answer that question both by examining the apparent radical skeptical implications of the skeptical component of skeptical theism and by comparing this view with fideism and Pyrrhonism, which also lay emphasis on our cognitive limitations. My ultimate purpose is to determine which of the three stances it makes more sense to adopt onc…Read more

    Disagreement
    Cambridge University Press. 2024.
This Element engages with the epistemic significance of disagreement, focusing on its skeptical implications. It examines various types of disagreement-motivated skepticism in ancient philosophy, ethics, philosophy of religion, and general epistemology. In each case, it favors suspension of judgment as the seemingly appropriate response to the realization of disagreement. One main line of argument pursued in the Element is that, since in real-life disputes we have limited or inaccurate informati…Read more

In this essay, I consider an evolutionary debunking argument (EDA) that purports to undermine the epistemic justification of the belief in the reliability of our belief-forming processes, and an evolutionary vindicating argument (EVA) that seeks to establish that such a belief is epistemically justified. Whereas the EDA in question seems to fall prey to crippling self-defeat, the EVA under consideration seems to fall prey to vicious circularity. My interest in those arguments and the problems th…Read more

Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in evolutionary debunking arguments directed against certain types of belief, particularly moral and religious beliefs. According to those arguments, the evolutionary origins of the cognitive mechanisms that produce the targeted beliefs render these beliefs epistemically unjustified. The reason is that natural selection cares for reproduction and survival rather than truth, and false beliefs can in principle be as evolutionarily advantageous as tru…Read more

Is Pyrrhonian Suspension Incompatible with Doubt?
    Midwest Studies in Philosophy 45 27-55. 2021.
The Pyrrhonian skeptic’s stance, as described by Sextus Empiricus, is in good part defined by his suspending judgment or belief about all the matters he has so far investigated. Most interpreters of Pyrrhonism maintain that it is a mistake to understand this form of skepticism in terms of doubt because suspension as conceived of by the Pyrrhonist is markedly different from the state of doubt. In this article, I expound the reasons that have been offered in support of that prevailing view and ass…Read more

When involved in a disagreement, a common reaction is to tell oneself that, given that the information about one’s own epistemic standing is clearly superior in both amount and quality to the information about one’s opponent’s epistemic standing, one is justified in one’s confidence that one’s view is correct. In line with this natural reaction to disagreement, some contributors to the debate on its epistemic significance have claimed that one can stick to one’s guns by relying in part on inform…Read more

In a recent article, Mario Attie-Picker maintains that a number of experimental studies provide evidence against Sextus Empiricus’s empirical claims about both the connection between belief and anxiety and the connection between suspension of judgement and undisturbedness. In this article, I argue that Sextus escapes unharmed from the challenge raised by the studies in question for the simple reason that he does not make the claims ascribed to him. In other words, I argue that Attie-Picker is at…Read more

Can the Skeptic Search for Truth?
Elenchos: Rivista di Studi Sul Pensiero Antico 42 (2). 2021.
Sextus Empiricus associates the skeptical stance with the activity of inquiry or investigation. My purpose in this paper is to examine the Pyrrhonist's involvement in that activity because getting an accurate understanding of the nature and purpose of skeptical inquiry makes it possible to delineate some of the distinctive traits of Pyrrhonism as a kind of philosophy. I defend the minority view among specialists according to which (i) Sextus describes both the prospective Pyrrhonist and the full…Read more

This book explores the nature and significance of Pyrrhonism, the most prominent and influential form of skepticism in Western philosophy. Not only did Pyrrhonism play an important part in the philosophical scene of the Hellenistic and Imperial age, but it also had a tremendous impact on Renaissance and modern philosophy and continues to be a topic of lively discussion among both scholars of ancient philosophy and epistemologists. The focus and inspiration of the book is the brand of Pyrrhonism …Read more
