Why Tropes Are Well Suited for Characterizing Elementary Particles
    Grazer Philosophische Studien 102 (1): 39-53. 2025.
As a new approach to metaphysics, trope theory has been increasingly applied to natural sciences in recent years, including particle physics. However, the theory of elementary particles is complicated by the different kinds of transitions between particles. This article demonstrates how an amended trope theory can be used to describe elementary particles of the standard model as well as possible transitions. Furthering the works of Morganti, Ehring as well as of Simons and for the first time exa…Read more

Das Standardmodell der Teilchenphysik bildet eine wesentliche Grundlage der modernen Physik. Doch was sind Elementarteilchen eigentlich? Diese Frage führt aus der Physik in die Philosophie, speziell in die Ontologie, die Lehre vom Sein.

Based on the results of the Standard Model of elementary particle physics, Thomas Christian Brückner analyses the findings of modern particle physics. In doing so, he highlights the fundamental concepts contained in the Standard Model. His particular aim is to provide an ontological characterisation of elementary particles using the theory of tropes. As it turns out, this approach has clear advantages over traditional substance ontology, especially for this subject.

In the present paper the attempt is made for the first time to formalize the modern theory of elementary particles based on the structuralist approach. To this end, the description within the scope of the so-called standard model is considered. In the physics of elementary particles the term ‘standard model’ denotes the summary of theories which describe the various elementary building blocks of matter as well as their interactions between each other. This model represents one of the most succes…Read more
