En las páginas siguientes mostraré que el movimiento de la Tierra en el De Re-volutionibus de Copérnico es una hipótesis astronómica y no una tesis filosófica como han sugerido Galileo y algunos historiadores. Primero presentaré evidencia textual que ilustra que Copérnico consideró el movimiento terrestre como un principio astronómico seguro, es decir, como una hipótesis epistemológicamente suficiente para salvar las apariencias y deducir el orden y tamaño de los orbes celestes. Luego analizaré los argumentos filosófico-naturales ofrecidos por Copérnico al comienzo de su obra, que no constituyen una prueba directa de la realidad física del movimiento de la Tierra, sino que buscan hacer explícitas las insuficiencias de las razones de sus adversarios para así otorgarle verosimilitud a la hipótesis. Finalmente, llegaré a la conclusión de que dichos argumentos acompañan al resto de la obra ya que la astronomía es, en el contexto disciplinar del siglo XVI, una disciplina matemática mixta. Así, se rechaza la idea de que sean el intento (fallido o no) de desarrollar una teoría física completa o una nueva cosmología, que de esta manera estaría al margen de los modelos matemáticos y tablas que componen los restantes libros o en contraste con ellos.

By exploring a prominent controversy in the recent history of the philosophy of science, I vindicate the role of metahistorical reasoning when historical case studies are used as evidence to support conflicting philosophical claims. I draw on the selective realism debate concerning the caloric theory of heat as a case study, arguing that basic criteria of historical adequacy are sufficiently robust to adjudicate this disagreement. On these grounds, I rebut the view that the dispute about caloric cannot be resolved in historical terms. This position is based on historical pluralism—namely, the argument that historical evidence cannot settle philosophical disagreements, partially because historiographical standards are too weak for adjudication. After characterizing historical pluralism and considering its rationale for diagnosing the selective realism debate about caloric, I show how this philosophical conflict is resolved in terms of standards for assessing the quality of the competing reconstructions of Joseph Black’s and Antoine Lavoisier’s epistemic pronouncements about the materiality of heat.

I examine whether the theory of extended knowledge (TEK) can provide a fully satisfactory account of epistemic agency by combining active externalism and virtue reliabilism. TEK would be a fully satisfactory theory if it could explain how agents are epistemically responsible by both having and manifesting a cognitive disposition to appropriately respond to defeating reasons vis-à-vis their epistemic status. My negative thesis is that TEK fails to achieve this goal because its first-order explanatory principles lead to scepticism. As a result, the theory should be abandoned. My positive thesis, however, is that TEK can provide a fully satisfactory explanation of agency if epistemic relativism is adopted as a second-order principle. Although this manoeuvre involves adjusting the metaepistemology underlying TEK, it makes it possible to retain the combination of active externalism and virtue reliabilism that constitutes this epistemological theory.

Este artículo aborda el problema del origen de la normatividad epistémica de la ciencia desde un enfoque socio-histórico. Haciendo extensivo el modelo comunitarista de las prácticas lingüísticas a las prácticas científicas, sostiene que las normas científicas son instituciones, esto es, patrones estables de comportamiento colectivo generados y constituidos a través del desarrollo histórico de la investigación científica. Primero explica en qué consiste la normatividad en las prácticas lingüísticas, luego caracteriza la normatividad de la ciencia como institución encargada de producir conocimiento sobre la naturaleza y, finalmente, discute algunas objeciones presentadas contra la perspectiva naturalista que subyace a esta comprensión socio-histórica de la normatividad.

Una manera de integrar historia y filosofía de la ciencia consiste en usar estudios históricos de caso como evidencia de conclusiones filosóficas sobre la ciencia. A pesar de tener ejemplos representativos en la actualidad, varios autores han puesto esta metodología en tela de juicio con un argumento escéptico de circularidad epistémica. En este artículo reivindico el estatus epistémico de esta metodología mediante una estrategia que muestra que este argumento no funciona o que el escéptico estaría finalmente en desventaja dialéctica. Sobre esta base, señalo cómo esta controvers.

We critically examine Vickers’ project of future-proof science, which aims to identify scientific facts based upon a solid international scientific consensus. Vickers claims that second-order evidence—specifically a 95% consensus among a diverse, international scientific community—provides a principled criterion for identifying future-proof science. We challenge both the motivation behind this project and Vickers’ account of scientific consensus. Our analysis raises concerns about the methodological validity of the 30 alleged examples of future-proof science, questioning the selection, isolation, and interpretation of such scientific claims. We argue that the dissimilarities among these examples expose potential flaws, such as lack of simplicity and semantic opacity, which undermine their effectiveness in supporting the project. Furthermore, we criticize the assumption that a solid international scientific consensus is a reliable indicator of future-proof science. Given that consensus in science is multifactorial, we contend that second-order evidence is insufficient to support any scientific claim as an instance of future-proof science. We also object that scientific consensus cannot be correlated to future-proof science, provided its mechanism is driven by social factors that are not necessarily aligned with the reliability required for claims about established scientific facts. Our analysis thus reveals that Vickers fails to tackle the so-called threshold problem afflicting his proposed criterion for future-proof science.
