The article discusses the concepts of solitude and loneliness, exploring their distinct roles in human experience within the context of the modern information society. It argues that while both involve a degree of separation from others, solitude is a voluntary, constructive state that supports self-reflection and inner growth, whereas loneliness is an involuntary, painful condition resulting from a lack of meaningful social connection. The study contends that digital technologies – despite offering constant connectivity – often exacerbate loneliness by fostering shallow interactions that fail to meet deeper relational needs, while simultaneously eroding opportunities for true solitude. The findings emphasise that solitude remains an essential, unchanging element of human nature, providing space for autonomy and inner dialogue, while loneliness has intensified in the digital era, reflecting both the breakdown of authentic communication and the illusion of connection. The article concludes that reclaiming the value of solitude and addressing the structural causes of loneliness are critical steps toward emotional well-being in today’s hyperconnected world.

The article attempts to substantiate the terminological and conceptual distinction between the phenomena of solitude and loneliness. Despite their fundamental differences, they are frequently conflated in both common language and academic discourse. Solitude is conceptualized as a positive and intentional state – an active choice made by an individual to step away from the distractions of the external world and engage in introspection, contemplation, and self-growth. In contrast, loneliness is presented as a negative emotional condition, which arises when an individual feels disconnected, unfulfilled, or alienated, and often reflects a deeper inability or unwillingness to embrace solitude. Loneliness is the emotional discomfort that occurs when the human need for social interaction remains unmet, which may also stem from an internal conflict between the desire for connection and the incapacity to tolerate the solitude necessary to foster personal reflection and growth. Previous research has sought to differentiate between solitude as a source of creative inspiration, spiritual enlightenment, or emotional refuge, and solitude as a condition of social withdrawal or alienation. However, it has become increasingly apparent that loneliness often lurks beneath the surface of these various types of solitude, complicating the issue further and undermining the clarity of its terminology. This overlap between solitude and loneliness has introduced a degree of ambiguity, making it more difficult to establish clear boundaries between the two concepts. Given these challenges, the article advocates for a more unified and holistic conceptualization of solitude, positioning it as an essential and natural component of human existence. Rather than being viewed as a negative or avoidable experience, solitude should be understood as a necessary state that accompanies individuals on their path of personal development, self-realization, and intellectual exploration.

Переважну кількість сучасних наукових досліджень, присвячених феномену самотності, здійснюють у рамках психології, соціології та літературознавчої критики. Однак ці пошуки мають справу з конкретними проявами багатовимірного явища самотності, залишаючи поза увагою його природу й фундаментальну філософсько-антропологічну сутність, що ховається за вторинними нашаруваннями емпірики. Завданням цієї розвідки є розгляд феномену самотності у представників світової філософської думки новітніх часів, у вченнях яких він отримав найповніший вияв, зокрема у представників екзистенціалізму, філософії життя, феноменології та психодинамічної теорії, серед яких К. Ясперс, М. Бердяєв, М. Бубер, М. Гайдеґґер, Е. Левінас. Відчутний спалах інтересу до феномену самотності у філософії був у середині ХІХ – ХХ ст., однак зацікавленість ним не зникла, про що свідчать сучасні праці, покликані заповнити лакуни, означені попередниками. Попри розбіжності у поглядах на характер самотності та її вплив на особистість, а також щодо моменту, коли відбувається зіткнення людини з її самотністю, у цих мислителів є й дещо спільне: усі вони самотність неодмінно розглядають крізь призму Іншого (чи то конкретної особистості, чи то цілого суспільства), як необхідну умову і для істинного пізнання речей, і для самопізнання. Що ж до розбіжностей у поглядах на самотність, то вони можуть бути породжені «термінологічним хаосом», що й досі панує при розгляді цього питання. На позначення різних проявів цього феномену використовують поняття «усамітнення», «відчуження», «ізоляція» та власне «самотність», часто не розрізняючи їх; вибудовують класифікації шляхом описових визначень. Неясність має бути подолано завдяки розмежуванню споріднених, але відмінних понять і виробленню єдиного підходу щодо взаємозв’язку між сутністю поняття і його різноманітними лексичними виявами. Ця стаття є спробою такого прояснення – шляхом виявлення спільного й відмінного в доробках філософів новітніх часів, які найбільше цікавилися феноменом самотності, відводячи їй важливе місце у власних філософських розвідках.
