Physicians from four of Mexico City's National Health Institutes were selected for the study. The following specialties were sampled: internists ; pediatricians ; gynecologists and obstetricians and neurologists . The questionnaires designed by Macer were used. Even when 8 out of 10 physicians questioned responded they were interested or very interested in science, their knowledge on science and technology in general and on genetic engineering is poor. The survey results make it clear that there was consensus in that the intellectual property of ideas is acceptable, but not for the products of genetic engineering. Worth noting is the inverse relation between the acceptance of use of genetic engineering to modify physical, intellectual or ethical characteristics of individuals and the knowledge on the basis of genetic engineering
