This book examines how design informs our daily lives and enhances the aesthetic quality of the ordinary. It shows how objects, spaces, and habits shape well-being, social relations, and environmental awareness. Bridging philosophy and design research, the volume gathers international scholars who explore the sensory, symbolic, and ethical values embedded in contemporary design practices. From the beauty of functional objects to the atmospheres of urban spaces and the formation of habits, the book reveals design as a relational practice that nurtures care, sustainability, and meaning, highlighting its role in shaping the aesthetic quality of everyday life.

Today the experience of beauty may be enjoyed by means of products that are not only artistic but also commercial and aesthetics is facing new horizons which include the experiences of everyday life. However, because of their prosaic character everyday objects have only rarely been at the centre of philosophical reflection. The aim of this issue of “Aisthesis” is to reflect with fruitful variety of approach on the epistemological status of the product, its value and significance in the light of the dialectics functionality/beauty, its relationship with the art work, and the new and specific conceptual paradigms that may offer an interpretive key.

Il presente volume ibrida in modo originale il libro d’arte e il libro d’artista. I testi, ispirati da alcune parole presentate in forma aggettivale e pertanto più poetica e connotativa, non costituiscono un commento alle immagini create da Laura Pitingaro, ma sono chiavi interpretative che esplorano la varietà ambientale da prospettive culturali eterogenee (filosofiche, scientifiche, artistiche). Queste stesse parole costituiscono al contempo l’elemento seminale da cui germoglia la creatività immaginifica dell’artista. Da questa coesistenza e varietà di forme interpretative ed espressive deriva la natura biodiversa del libro che trasforma concetti astratti in esperienze sensoriali, visive e linguistiche. Pertanto, il libro nasce con il proposito sperimentale di creare un mosaico di parole e immagini per una più profonda comprensione della biodiversità in chiave multidisciplinare e transdisciplinare. Tuttavia, il suo scopo va al di là della mera divulgazione di informazioni. Tra- smettendo non solo la conoscenza razionale, ma soprattutto la consapevolezza sensibile (dal greco aisthesis = sensazione) della biodiversità, questo libro d’arte aspira a suscitare emozioni, trasportando il lettore in un viaggio sensoriale attraverso cui idee e concetti complessi sono veicolati in modo accessibile e coinvolgente. Dunque, perché un libro d’arte per riflettere sull’ambiente? Perché è un’opera bella e preziosa come il suo contenuto, la biodiversità.

The essay aims to demonstrate that participatory ecological art focused on plant-ing, sowing, and cultivation serves as a means to promote a culture of environ-mental care. After exploring several artistic projects involving community engage-ment in landscape stewardship, the essay focuses on the debate concerning ges-ture and behavioral patterns. Finally, by examining artist Egle Oddo’s Performative Habitats project, it seeks to understand how art can influence the formation of new habits through both increased environmental awareness and repeated action, employing key theoretical frameworks of Everyday Aesthetics.

Everyday Aesthetics was born in the 21 st Century as a sub-discipline of Anglo-American Aesthetics and it has spread in the international debate. However, the contribute of historical perspective has not properly explored yet. Is it possible to trace the history of everyday aesthetics before the official birth of this discipline? I will try and give an affirmative answer by focusing on an exemplary category: that of the decorum. Using the history of ideas, I will analyse the Greek concept of prepon and the similar Latin concepts of decorum which express the idea of ‘convenience’ or ‘fitness to purpose’ in the ethical and rhetorical sphere. Later I will analyse the evolution of the concept of decorum in the theory of Ancient and Renaissance architecture (Vitruvius, Leon Battista Alberti). My goal is to demonstrate that in Ancient and Renaissance culture decorum is a category that refers to the objects and practices of everyday life but also a principle that regulates appropriate behaviour in the sphere of good manners. Consequently, given its pervasiveness in the different areas of everyday life, the concept of decorum can be a paradigmatic example to trace the history of everyday aesthetics.

According to Hegel and to the romantic theory, Aesthetics is a philosophy of art. However, nowadays we can experience the beauty not only with art, but also with every product. So we can query if the realm of aesthetics should hold also everyday products and how this could transform the traditional aesthetic categories.This essay aim to answer these questions. It aim furthermore to sketch the product’s theoretical foundations referring to national and international debate which have dealt with everyday aesthetics according to different point of view.
