I have recently defended my Ph.D. in the Philosophy Department at the University of Western Ontario. My supervisor was John L. Bell. My dissertation develops a novel interpretation of Carnap’s philosophical program that places stress upon his methodological arguments for empiricism and conventionalism. This is in contrast to popular readings that focus on his Principle of Tolerance. I think that lessons derived from a correct reading of Carnap’s program are applicable to the philosophy of mathematics and science as practised today, and in future work I plan to explore such applications.
