L'époque contemporaine a substitué au futur – horizon ultime de la modernité – la promesse d'une expérience à jamais conjuguée au présent. Mais à force de vouloir être de son temps et de rester en phase avec l'actualité, l'actuel a pris le pas sur le possible. Le régime présentiste du contemporain nous a paradoxalement enfermés dans un hors-temps qui nous prive de recul et nous rend aveugles à ce qui peut advenir. Ce livre explore les contre-temps de notre époque : ses désynchronisations et ses écarts, dont l'art révèle aujourd'hui toute la nécessité. À travers neuf portraits d'artistes contemporains aux pratiques hétérogènes – photographie, dessin, film, performance, installation – se dessine une interrogation commune : comment toucher à ce qui (nous) arrive ?

Merleau-Ponty’s political philosophy has lately garnered renewed attention. While the kind of political tradition this philosophy belongs to remains a highly contested topic, the paper would like to make a twofold claim. Firstly, that Merleau-Ponty shares elementary assumptions with the tradition known as “postfoundationalism”. Secondly, that historically speaking, his thinking has influenced some of the figures associated with postfoundationalism today and should thus be acknowledged as an integral part of this tradition. In a sense, though, the awareness that all social and political orders are built upon contingency is not a rebuttal of institutions, but rather forces us to rethink their logic. As the paper argues, Merleau-Ponty sketches an alternative way to analyse democratic processes, by holding together both the ‘instituent’ and the ‘instituted’ moment of politics. In that respect, his writings contain what could be described a theory of ‘instituent practice’ inspired by Machiavelli and Marx, that overcomes the traditional dichotomy between force and form still present in contemporary theories of ‘constituent’ and of ‘destituent power’.

On ne saurait reprocher à une pensée dont le développement a été brutalement interrompu de ne pas être conclusive. Mais si cet inachèvement a inspiré de nombreux lecteurs pour imaginer des possibles prolongements, l’œuvre elle-même a souvent fait l’objet d’un oubli paradoxal. En suivant le fil rouge d’un concept opératoire traversant toute l’œuvre, on découvre la singulière cohérence philosophique qui l’anime. Observer Merleau-Ponty à l’œuvre, c’est redécouvrir tout le sens d’une pensée (du) sensible. Pour cette réédition, l’ouvrage a été considérablement remanié et amplifié, pour tenir compte des cours et manuscrits inédits. Ceux-ci imposent un nouveau découpage de l’œuvre, avec quatre grandes phases séparées par des tournants successifs : tournant langagier, tournant dialectique, tournant ontologique. Au passage, des pans nouveaux de la pensée merleau-pontienne se déplient, avec des ouvertures inédites pour penser Autrui, la politique, l’art, l’histoire et l’interanimalité.

This book is a defence of perspectivism in the age of post-truth. At the crossroads of science, art and philosophy, it unearths a tradition that we must rediscover: the point of view is not only what divides, it is also what is shared. The book makes a case why perspectivism alone can avoid us falling back into epistemological naivetés. It presents a series of case studies ranging from innovative interpretations of classical authors and key moments in the history of art—from ancient painting, trompe l’oeil, and Brunelleschi’s experiment in Renaissance Florence—to the issue of perspective in the work of contemporary artists such as Robert Smithson.

Philosophical speech is required to reach the core of the things themselves, often at the risk of subsuming the individual thing under the law of a general concept and ruining its singularity. Is another approach available to philosophy at all? The question of the violence of the discourse has been raised by many thinkers in the 20th century. Just as Wittgenstein, Husserl demanded for a replacement of deduction by description which would let the things appear in their own light. Merleau-Ponty has rephrased the task of a maieutic phenomenology in terms of”letting see through words” (faire voir par les mots), whereas the direct, exhaustive thematization is given up for an indirect speech, letting the world speak in its own “prose”. While the “indirect ontology” in Merleau-Ponty’s last works has received wide attention these last years, little case has been made of the linguistic implications of the figure of its philosophical operator, the “indirect speech”. What is the status of the “ logos” in Merleau-Ponty’s phenomeno-”logy”? By relating Merleau-Ponty’s reflections on the language of philosophy (rather than on philosophy of language) to the linguistic discussion on free indirect speech (Tobler, Kalepky, Bakhtin) as well as to its use in literature, from Dostoyevsky to Claude Simon, a new perspective opens up of an “indirect ethics”, which implies that whoever speaks in the name of the Other is already spoken by him or by her.

In contemporary philosophy, many attempts were made to rehabilitate the everyday. However, such a reappraisal of the everyday is ambivalent, as it tends to objectify what is profoundly elusive due to its diffuse, ambient character. The two prevailing strategies (the,celebration‘ of the everyday and the,critique‘ of the everyday) both miss the everyday because they treat it as a positive entity. Whether by celebrating or by understanding it – in both cases they kill it. This article argues that part of the problem lies in the objectifying bias inherent in these approaches and sketches an alternative phenomenological approach, which suggests that the character of the everydayness first and foremost lies in its,backgroundness‘ (Hintergründigkeit).

The paradoxical logic of transparency and mediation Transparency is the metaphor of our time. Whether in government or corporate governance, finance, technology, health or the media – it is ubiquitous today, and there is hardly a current debate that does not call for more transparency. But what does this word actually stand for and what are the consequences for the life of individuals? Can knowledge from the arts, and its play of visibility and invisibility, tell us something about the paradoxical logics of transparency and mediation? This Obscure Thing Called Transparency gathers contributions by international experts who critically assess the promises and perils of transparency today.

It is all the rage today to speak about the “power" of images. Yet while it seems hardly disputable that images generate fascination or repulsion and that they provoke laughter, tears or delight, it is by no means clear what it entails to grant them an agency of their own. The article sets out to chart the current literature on the topic, and to indicate why it is not the same to ask what it means for images to do things to us and what it means do things with images. While the former question often leads, under a disguise of object-oriented thinking, to reintroduce mentalism, the latter gets caught up in inextricable problems that Austin’s speech act theory already had to struggle with. In the last section, at alternative account is proposed: the performance of image is not an event of causation, it is a process of visualization that lets appear what can only appear in images.

In contemporary social epistemology, the claim has been made that there is a traditional “neglect of testimonial knowledge,” and that in the history of epistemology, first-hand self-knowledge was invariably prioritised over secondary knowledge. While this paper acknowledges some truth in these statements, it challenges the given explanations: the mentioned neglect of testimonial knowledge is based not so much on a primacy of self-knowledge, but that of self-agency. This article retraces some crucial chapters of this ‘do-it-yourself’ paradigm: it considers the imperative of autopsia in early Greek epistemology, history and medicine, and the early modern refashioning of the privilege of self-generated and self-taught (autodidactic) knowledge. A new picture emerges of how the emphasis on (self-)agency progressively shifted towards a focus on the self as the source of ultimate knowledge.
