ABSTRACT: From the first edition of The Gay Science (1882) to the second (1887), Nietzsche gave considerable thought to the problem of how a will to truth emerged in the history of knowledge. In this article, I advance a threefold thesis: first, I argue that in 1887 Nietzsche reread his own Gay Science genealogically, and that it is within this new context that he uncovered a hidden asceticism of knowledge, inherent in the will to truth "at any cost." Second, I show that Foucault grasped this shift as early as his work in the early 1970s, where he in fact describes Nietzsche's history of truth as an ascetic history. Third, I seek to highlight the implications Foucault drew from this analysis for the genealogical project of The Will to Know, the first volume of The History of Sexuality.

Les contributions réunies dans ce volume visent à explorer le champ des postérités généalogiques de Nietzsche. Dans cette perspective, il convient d'abord de faire une nette distinction entre la dimension programmatique de la Généalogie de la morale et les postérités effectives que le livre a eues par la suite aux XXe et XXIe siècles, pour tenter ensuite de comprendre comment le mot 'généalogie' a pu se détacher de Nietzsche et acquérir progressivement des significations multiples, bien au-delà de ce que Nietzsche lui-même avait pu anticiper ou imaginer. Il s'agit ainsi de se confronter à un enjeu crucial pour l'historien des idées: celui de retracer les métamorphoses du supposé concept nietzschéen de généalogie, notamment après ses reprises décisives par Deleuze et Foucault, pour faire ressortir la créativité, l'originalité et peut-être aussi la pertinence contemporaine de ces nouveaux discours. Cheminant dans cette direction, notre volume esquisse une sorte de généalogie des 'généalogies.' Cet article vise à apporter un éclairage sur les trois textes de 1888 que Nietzsche a intitulés « Anti-Darwin », à savoir un paragraphe du Crépuscule des idoles et deux fragments posthumes. Mon objectif est plus précisément de comprendre pourquoi l’expression « Anti Darwin » apparaît seulement en 1888, sachant que Nietzsche avait déjà adressé des critiques au darwinisme dans son œuvre antérieure, mais sans recourir à cette formule spécifique. Ma thèse est que les trois textes « Anti-Darwin » font partie du projet de transvaluation générale des valeurs qui caractérise l’année 1888.

The Realm of Human Breeding: Nietzsche’s Reception of Francis Galton’s Inquiries into Human Faculty and its Development. This paper aims at providing a comprehensive commentary on Nietzsche’s reception of the Inquiries into Human Faculty and its Development, a book published in 1883 by Francis Galton, the founder of post-Darwinian eugenics. I argue that the Inquiries have played a crucial role in Nietzsche’s mature philosophy of Züchtung and that this fact has generally gone unnoticed by Nietzsche scholars up to now. My interpretation is structured in four parts: I first describe the context in which Nietzsche borrowed the book from the Viennese physiologist Joseph Paneth (I). I then go on to discuss the absence of reading marks on Nietzsche’s copy of the Inquiries, which can be explained by this borrowing (II). Next, I give a summary of Galton’s book, in which I briefly contextualize the work in the history of life sciences, while highlighting the central eugenic theme (III). Lastly, I try to reconstruct Nietzsche’s critical interpretation of Galton’s ideas as it is expressed both in published works and in posthumous fragments (IV).

English summary: Nietzsche's work does not fit into readily defined categories or disciplinary fields. Rejecting definitive truths and assumptions, he nourished his philosophical explorations with constant experimentation, reading widely on texts as varied as Greek philosophy, Darwinian evolution, thermodynamic cosmology, and the history of religion. Through this multiplication of perspectives, Nietzsche developed a philosophy of culture that sought to raise mankind up beyond the possibilities of Judeo-Christian values. Although his philosophy would later be misappropriated for National Socialism, other much nobler readers, such as Heidegger and Foucault, would find value in his works. French description: L'oeuvre de Nietzsche ne se presente pas comme un systeme qui permettrait une categorisation simple dans un champ disciplinaire existant. Professeur de philologie classique a l'Universite de Bale, Nietzsche a renonce a sa chaire universitaire pour devenir un philosophe itinerant et un esprit libre. C'est l'epoque ou il rompt avec ses anciens mentors: Arthur Schopenhauer, son maitre en philosophie, et Richard Wagner, ce mystagogue dans les secrets de l'art et de la vie dont il avait salue le projet culturel dans La Naissance de la tragedie (1872). Nietzsche se mefiera dorenavant de toutes les convictions et de toutes les verites definitives. Sa philosophie sera une constante experimentation, nourrie d'innombrables lectures qui forment quasiment un panorama de l'histoire de la culture humaine: des Grecs a la theorie de l'evolution darwinienne, de la cosmologie thermodynamique a l'anthropologie evolutionniste, en passant par l'histoire du christianisme et des religions extra europeennes. On assiste chez Nietzsche a une multiplication indefinie des perspectives, au fil d'ecrits aphoristiques qui ne livrent jamais leur dernier mot. Une problematique essentielle se dessine cependant a travers ces multiples experimentations: c'est celle d'une philosophie de la culture, qui aspire a elever l'homme - tant au sens d'un elevage zoologique que d'une elevation de valeur - pour en faire un etre plus epanoui et plus puissant qu'il ne l'a ete jusqu'a present sous l'emprise des valeurs judeo chretiennes. Nietzsche propose ainsi une veritable transvaluation de toutes les valeurs, qui se veut tout autre chose qu'un retour a la barbarie des origines. L'auteur d'Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra a conscience, ce faisant, de s'affirmer comme un philosophe dangereux. Mais il pense que la creation est fondamentalement indissociable de la destruction, voyant dans cette idee le secret du dionysiaque et donc de la tragedie grecque. Les posterites de l'oeuvre de Nietzsche confirment son caractere a la fois dangereux et fecond. On ne saurait passer sous silence l'appropriation nazie, qui oblige a s'interroger sur ce qui, chez Nietzsche, pouvait preter le flanc a un tel detournement. Mais pour autant, il serait injuste de reduire Nietzsche a cette tragique caricature, alors qu'il a trouve en Heidegger, Deleuze ou encore Foucault des lecteurs bien plus dignes de lui.

Despite his well-known critical discourse on the “English moral genealogists”, Nietzsche seems to have taken Walter Bagehot’s essay on Physics and Politics, which he discovered in German translation in the first half of the 1870s, very seriously. This paper begins with a brief overview of Bagehot’s book. I then study Nietzsche’s reception of this work in Schopenhauer as Educator (1874) and, more importantly, in On the Genealogy of Morality (1887). In doing so, I argue that Bagehot’s cultural Lamarckism not only had a lasting influence on Nietzsche’s philosophy of breeding (Züchtung), but is likely to be an overlooked source of the whole reflection on “conscience” and “bad conscience” in the second treatise of the Genealogy.

Resumo: Este artigo visa a esclarecer o uso concreto que Nietzsche faz do vocabulário biológico em sua obra. Em vez de conceber a biologia como a soma indiferenciada das ciências da vida, o que é um anacronismo em vista da situação fragmentada dessas ciências na segunda metade do século XIX, levo em consideração o trabalho de Lynn Nyhart sobre a ascensão da perspectiva biológica na Alemanha, para evidenciar o sentido mais estreito no qual Nietzsche fala de “biologia”. A primeira parte do artigo identifica os interlocutores que Nietzsche caracteriza explicitamente como “biólogos”. Depois, tento determinar o tipo de biologia evolucionária que está em jogo, para poder, num último momento, explorar as ramificações epistemológicas e estéticas do discurso biológico nietzschiano.: This paper aims at clarifying the concrete use Nietzsche makes of the biological vocabulary in his work. Instead of conceiving biology as the undifferentiated sum of the life sciences, which is an anachronism in view of the fragmented situation of these sciences in the second half of the 19th century, I take into consideration Lynn Nyhart’s work on the rise of the biological perspective in Germany, to highlight the narrower sense in which Nietzsche speaks of “biology”. The first part of the paper identifies the interlocutors Nietzsche explicitly characterizes as “biologists”. I then try to ascertain the type of evolutionary biology that is at stake, to be able, in a last moment, to explore the epistemological and aesthetic ramifications of the Nietzschean biological discourse.

This paper analyses the important and pervasive role played by the reference to nature in The Birth of Tragedy. I argue that it has two sides that merge in the young Nietzsche’s “aesthetic metaphysics”. On the one hand, nature is an artist, inasmuch as it creates us artistically and also creates the states from which our own art will originate, whether Apolline or Dionysiac. By thus reinstating the artistic activity at the heart of reality, The Birth of Tragedy justifies the very notion of an “aesthetic metaphysics”, against a traditional understanding of mimesis inherited from Plato and, above all, Aristotle. But on the other hand, the young Nietzsche refuses to fall prey to a teleological conception of nature in the manner of Schopenhauer and Hartmann. Nietzsche’s pessimism duly records his readings on “Darwinism”: we live in a cruel and disappointing nature, ruled by chance and by the antagonism of a profuse fertility and a prolific mortality. This nature can be characterised as tragic insofar as no higher purpose gives meaning to death, while dying is not, for the individual, a metaphysically superficial event. Articulating these two dimensions of nature allows to understand the joy in which the Dionysiac experience culminates.

Christian Emden’s book is a contribution to the current debates in the English-language literature over Nietzsche’s “naturalism.” Emden regards this subject as “crucial to any understanding of Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical thought”, claiming that the “central task of Nietzsche’s philosophical project” is to “translate humanity back into nature,” as Nietzsche himself puts it in BGE 230. However, Emden does not undertake to demonstrate this thesis as such. Rather, he aims to interpret Nietzsche’s naturalism in terms of the “problem of normativity”, that of how the sources of normativity can be understood without appealing to a normative standard independent of us as natural beings....

RésuméCet article est consacré à l’influence philosophique de Paul Rée sur Nietzsche à l’époque d’Humain, trop humain. Je n’interprète pas cette influence de manière analytique, c’est-à-dire en la déclinant en thèmes ou en aspects distincts, mais de manière synthétique: Nietzsche s’inspire selon moi du programme de recherche original défini par Rée dans les Observations psychologiques, qui opère une synthèse entre la tradition moralistique française et la théorie de l’évolution darwinienne. Ce programme «moraliste darwinien» pose les jalons d’une des premières psychologies évolutionnistes du XIXe siècle. Nietzsche et Rée partagent l’objectif de discerner une nature humaine en évolution, qui ne peut être comprise indépendamment de l’histoire. Mais leurs manières différentes d’articuler psychologie et évolution caractérisent deux logiques de raisonnement incompatibles entre lesquelles le philosophe doit choisir.

Nietzsche considére les notions fondamentales sur lesquelles repose la connaissance humaine comme des fictions. Plutót que de souligner une novelle fois cette conclusion de sa pensée épistémologique, nous táchons dans cet article d'éclairer le cheminement qui l'y a conduit. En effet, lorsque Nietzsche caractérise les «vérités de l'homme» comme autant d'«erreurs irréfutables de l'homme», il adopte manifestement un double point de vue sur la vérité dont il importe de comprendre la logique. Cette double perspective doit selon nous être rapportée à une réception du message de Kant dans la Critique de la raison pure. Nietzsche l'interprète comme une forme extrème de scepticisme aux termes de laquelle les conditions a priori de la possibilité de l'expérience n'ont pas d'auture légitimité, justement, que de rendre possible l'expérience, et de conserver ainsi l'étre contingent qu'est l'homme. En se présentant comme un défenseur de notre science des phénoménes, Kant aurait done reculé devant les conséquences transcendantales de sa critique, pour se replier dans une attitude simplement pragmatique. C'est dés lors une démarche plus radicale, et done plus probe, qui permet à Nietzsche d'élaborer la notion de volonté de puissance.Für Nietzsche sind die Grundbegriffe des menschlichen Wissens Fiktionen. Der Aufsatz will zeigen, wie Nietzsche zu dieser Auffassung kam. Wenn Nietzsche die 'menschelich Warheit' mit einem 'unvermeidlichen Irrtum des Menschen' verbindet, so bezieht er offensichtlich einen doppelten Standpunkt hinsichtlich der Wahrheit, dessen Logik aufgezeigt werden muss. Ich denke, diese doppelte Perspektive muss als eine Antword auf Kants Kritik der reinen Vernunft angeschen werden: Nietzsche interpretiert Kants Lehre als eine extreme Form des Skeptizismus, nach welcher die apriorischen Bedingungen möglicher Erfahrung nur eine Rechtfertigung haben, nämlich Erfahrung möglich zu machen, und damit den Menschen als ein kontingentes Wesen zu bestätigen. Kant erwies sich als Meister der phänomenalen Wissenschaft. Aber asl solcher hat er, für Nietzsche, gerade nicht die transzendentalen Konsequenzen seiner eigenen Fragestellung gezogen, sondern bloß eine pragmatische Antowrt gegeben. Eine rakikalerer und dami redlicher Ansatz wird Nietzsche dazu füren, den Begriff des Willens zur Macht zu entwicklen
