I specialize in philosophy of science. My research concerns the relationship between instruments and knowledge claims in the natural sciences. What makes measuring instruments suitable for testing scientific hypotheses? How are claims to the reliability of measuring instruments justified, and how is reliability tied to accuracy? Are computer simulations capable of generating novel scientific evidence, and if so, is there an interesting sense in which simulations may function as measuring instruments?
