Does the COVID-19 pandemic allow us to question the rationality of modern societies? This paper addresses this question in two parts. First, I reconstruct Hegel’s account of the “ethical moment.” I claim that the ethical moment of war matters, for it shows the necessary institutional infrastructure that enables the possibility of the whole of modern ethical life, especially the civil society of individuals. It shows what is finite, necessary, and rational. In the second part I outline a Hegelian ethical moment of the pandemic. If the pandemic bears the functional role of war, the Hegelian implication shows a rationality that inheres in the state to pursuit the survival of the ethical life. This points to the centrality of state capacity (i.e. a strong and universal public health system), and goes beyond the public discourse framing of the issue (as a matter of ideological bias, or pure individual rights).

El presente texto busca desarrollar y explicitar el concepto de filosofía que Martin Heidegger tenía desde la segunda mitad de la década de 1920, es decir, en los años que giran en torno a Ser y tiempo. Se toman como ejes los cursos dictados en esos años en la Universidad de Marburgo. La distinción entre ciencias positivas y ciencia crítica, así como la distinción entre filosofía científica y filosofía como concepción del mundo, tendrán por objetivo precisar qué es lo propio del quehacer filosófico: la diferencia ontológica. Tematizar el ser es lo propio de la filosofía para Heidegger, lo cual implica considerar que la filosofía en sentido pleno y eminente es ontología. Su relación con el ente no es positiva, pues se da en función al problema del sentido del ser. Todo ello nos permitirá tener una mejor comprensión de lo que Heidegger entendía por quehacer filosófico (ontología fenomenológica) y poder, así, estar en una mejor posición para comprender aspectos fundamentales del proyecto de la ontología fundamental desarrollado por Heidegger en Ser y tiempo

In this article, I develop a critical engagement between decolonial thought and critical realism to propose a realist foundation for decoloniality. Through an internal critique of Walter Mignolo's work, I challenge the meta-theoretical prioritization of epistemology over ontology that underpins his critique of Western modernity. I argue that this position ultimately undermines the very possibility of meaningful decolonial critique, which requires a realist understanding of social structures such as the colonial matrix of power (CMP). By retrieving ontology as a legitimate category for decolonial analysis, I show that critical realism provides the necessary philosophical resources to account for the reality of coloniality beyond epistemic frameworks. This realist orientation allows decolonial critique to transcend cultural relativism, affirming its universal critical claims against Eurocentrism and its commitment to unveiling enduring structures of domination.
