In this article, the diagnostic potential of democratic theories in the digital age is analyzed. A critical examination is conducted on Mouffe’s theory of radical democracy, which divides democratic theories into consensus-oriented and conflictoriented models. The article argues that radical democracy’s critique of deliberative democracy is flawed, as it relies on a straw man argument; that radical democracy has logical problems and is institutionally under-complex. Most importantly, radical democracy, due to its epistemological position, cannot achieve its claim of allowing conflict while limiting its violent character. In view of the identified theoretical problems and their practical-political implications, a new typology of theories of democracy is proposed. This new typology suggests that the decisive dividing line is not consensus vs. conflict, but rather epistemological: The decisive dividing line, of utmost importance for the digital age, runs along the question of whether one relies on reason or struggle as the medium of conflict resolution.

Hobbes’s theory of authorisation poses numerous puzzles to scholars. The weightiest of these conundrums is a supposed contradiction between chapter 17 of Leviathan, that calls for unconditional submission to the sovereign, and chapter 21, that defends the liberties of the subject. This article offers a fresh perspective on the theory’s consistency, function and addressees. While existing research doubts the theory’s consistency, focuses on its immunisation function and on the subjects as the theory’s main addresses, the paper argues that Hobbes’s theory of authorisation is consistent with the doctrine of the liberty of subjects, and that it serves the dual purpose of immunising the sovereign against criticism and disciplining the sovereign via a counsel of memento mori: A hitherto underexplored element of authorisation theory is a reminder of the mortality of sovereignty directed at the sovereign to convince him to make restricted use of his absolute right to rule. Hobbes’s theory of authorisation can thus be read as part of a complex argumentative strategy for peace, rooted in a ‘liberal absolutism’ which is not as paradoxical as it sounds, and which is reflected in the frontispiece by the friendly smile of the sovereign.

Durch die Entdeckung und das vertiefte Verständnis der sogenannten „Genscheren“ CRISPR/Cas9 rücken Eingriffe in das Genom zukünftiger Menschen in greifbare Nähe und erfordern mit neuer Dringlichkeit die Beantwortung einer fundamentalen politiktheoretischen Frage: Können Eingriffe in die genetische Ausstattung zukünftiger Menschen im Namen der Gerechtigkeit erlaubt oder gar geboten sein? Rawls’sche Theorieelemente haben in der Debatte um Keimbahneingriffe – trotz Rawls’ vergleichsweise spärlicher eigener Bemerkungen zu eugenischen Fragen – erstaunliche Prominenz entfaltet. Unter Rekurs auf die Rawls’sche Theorie der Grundgüter wird in der Debatte argumentiert, dass Eingriffe im Namen der Chancengleichheit geboten sind und/oder keine Einschränkung der Freiheiten zukünftiger Personen vorliegt, sofern nur sogenannte „genetische Grundgüter“ nicht minimiert oder vermehrt werden. Ich argumentiere für die These, dass diese Argumente einer „liberalen Eugenik“ auf einer verkürzten Rezeption der Rawls’schen Grundgütertheorie basieren. Rawls selbst sah sich nach seiner Veröffentlichung der Theorie der Gerechtigkeit dazu veranlasst, Missverständnisse in Bezug auf seine Grundgütertheorie auszuräumen, und konzedierte, dass seine Darstellung in der Theorie möglicherweise missverständlich gewesen sei. Eine Rekonstruktion der komplexen Theorie der Grundgüter, wie sie in der Theorie angelegt ist, und später von Rawls weiterentwickelt wurde, kann daher die brandaktuelle Debatte um Keimbahneingriffe informieren, indem sie erstens zeigt, dass die gängigen Argumente für Eingriffe sich nicht in der üblichen Form auf Rawls’ Grundgütertheorie stützen können und zweitens Möglichkeiten aufzeigt, mit Rawls ein Argument gegen eine weitgehende Freigabe von Keimbahneingriffen zu formulieren, das die Begründungspflicht wieder zulasten interventionistischer Positionen verschiebt. Meinem Aufsatz liegt folgende Struktur zugrunde: Zuerst rekonstruiere ich zwei Hauptargumente „liberaler Eugenik“ und zeige, dass und wie beide Argumente auf die Rawls’sche Idee der Grundgüter zurückgreifen und breite Verwendung in der bioethischen Debatte gefunden haben (1). In einem zweiten Schritt skizziere ich eine komplexere Version von Rawls’ Grundgütertheorie, die bereits in der Theorie der Gerechtigkeit angelegt ist, aber auch für spätere Schriften wichtig bleibt (2). Danach zeige ich, dass sich die Argumente der „liberalen Eugenik“ nicht auf diese komplexere Version der Theorie der Grundgüter stützen können und dass sich mithilfe der komplexen Theorie der Grundgüter sogar ein Argument gegen eine umfassende Freigabe von Keimbahneingriffen formulieren lässt, das die Begründungspflicht für interventionistische Positionen vergrößert (3). Ich schließe mit einem kurzen Fazit zur Relevanz von Rawls’ Theorie im biotechnischen Zeitalter (4).

Dieses Buch präsentiert eine neue Deutung des kontraktualistischen Arguments, wie es im englischen »Leviathan« formuliert wird. Die Hobbes-Forschung konzentriert sich auf den rationalen Akteur und ignoriert die Rolle des Körpers für Hobbes' politische Philosophie. Das Buch schließt diese Forschungslücke und entwickelt eine »körpertheoretische Deutung« des kontraktualistischen Arguments: Der Körper prägt den Inhalt und den Status des Arguments entscheidend. Er ist Ursache eines gravierenden argumentlogischen Problems, das Eva Odzuck als biopolitische Aporie beschreibt. Zudem kann die Körperperspektive den Status des Arguments erhellen: Es handelt sich um einen Appell an die körperbasierten Leidenschaften, der auf den Gehorsam der Untertanen zielt. Durch den Nachweis, dass Hobbes' rhetorischen Strategien eine ausdifferenzierte Leidenschaftslehre zu Grunde liegt, leistet das Buch zugleich einen Beitrag zum Problem einer angemessenen Hobbes-Hermeneutik. In Ergänzung zu spieltheoretischen und rechtstheoretischen Deutungen zeigt die »körpertheoretische Deutung des kontraktualistischen Arguments« auf, dass Thomas Hobbes einen »körperbasierten Liberalismus« entwickelt, der theoretisch schwach und (als rhetorische Fassade) moralisch fragwürdig ist.

The concept of nature and naturalness plays an important role in academic and public bioethical discussions. Given the obvious weakness of arguments that are based on a genetic and/or totalizing view of nature, the immense and repeated efforts to criticize them demand explanation. The repeated critique of such weak arguments and the tendency to avoid the category of nature can be explained by political motivations. While an unjustified appeal to nature, or a description of genome editing as unnatural, is of course problematic, we cannot develop the contours of a responsible genome policy without the dimension of nature. I work with the hypothesis that our relation to nature is in itself deeply normative and political, and conclude that a responsible biopolicy requires us to bring the question of nature back into the center of our political philosophy and our liberal democracies.

_ Source: _Volume 30, Issue 2, pp 123 - 155 While there are old questions in research on Hobbes regarding which audience he addressed in each of his different works – e.g. there are speculations that _De Cive_ is addressed to scientists and _Leviathan_ to the English people – another question has rarely been discussed and only recently reconsidered: Might Hobbes have addressed different audiences also _within_ one and the same text, and if so, might he have intended to communicate different messages to different readers? As ‘Straussian’ as this question might sound, it does not require us to impose external principles of hermeneutics on Hobbes’s texts. As this paper will argue, there is strong plausibility for the claim that Hobbes himself believes in the possibility and the necessity of ‘diversified communication’ or, to state it differently, to communicate different things to different people within one and the same text. By analysing Hobbes’s passion-grounded hermeneutics that is expressed both in Hobbes’s political writings and in his writings on science and on poetry, I show that it is very likely that Hobbes wrote ‘not all to all’ but instead designed different arguments for different people. Employing the heterogeneity principle in interpreting Hobbes’s texts might thus shed new light on some persistent puzzles of Hobbes’s political philosophy.
