Als Mitte und Mittelndes befinden Medien sich in einem grundsätzlichen Dazwischen, das geeignet ist, falschen Gegensätzen zugunsten eines spannungsreichen Sowohl-als-auch zu entkommen. Aus kunst-, kultur- und medienphilosophischer Perspektive fragen die Beiträger*innen des Bandes nach den Erscheinungsweisen eines medialen Zwischenraumes. Wenn wir die Mitte nicht nur räumlich, sondern auch zeitlich denken – nämlich als Weg und Bewegung der Vermittlung – geraten weitere Qualitäten des Medialen in den Blick. Gegenüber einem vermittlungs- und formvergessenen Denken gilt es, die Bedeutung des Dazwischen hervorzuheben, durch die die Gegenstände geistiger Bezugnahme erst zu dem werden, was sie sind.

Die philosophische Ästhetik befasst sich nicht ausschließlich mit Fragen der Kunst, sondern allgemeiner mit Problemen der Form-Gebung und der Wahrnehmungs-Vermittlung. Im Recht werden diese Fragen zwar im Rahmen der Methodenlehre gelegentlich berücksichtigt, jedoch steht die evaluative und affektive Überformung von Wahrnehmungen unter einem generellen Subjektivitätsverdacht. Ästhetik im Sinne einer Wahrnehmungslehre ist der geeignete diskursive Ort, um solchen Verdacht als vermittlungsvergessen zu kritisieren. Der Sammelband untersucht anhand einer Vielzahl von Phänomenen, auf welche Weise nicht nur sprachliche, sondern auch performative und mediale Faktoren die Urteilsbildung beeinflussen. Im klassischen Zuschnitt bedenkt die Rechtsphilosophie wohl philosophische Teildisziplinen wie die Ethik oder die politische Philosophie, kaum jedoch die Ästhetik. Im vorliegenden Band werden dagegen rechtsästhetische Forschungsperspektiven als heuristisches Instrumentarium erprobt. The sympathetic and negative emotions triggered in and by aesthetic experiences are among the enduring explanatory needs of reception aesthetics. Kant may have found a plausible formula for the intellectual pleasure of artworks in the free play of the powers of imagination. But it might be too intellectualistic to explain the aesthetic experience of music or immersive films. In English-language aesthetics, it has been discussed for decades as the paradox of fiction, why we are scared, for instance, in horror movies at all, even though we know that there is no real danger. The lecture seeks answers to these questions in the intentionality of the mind and the imagination.

Die Phänomenologie stellt eine der Hauptströmungen der Gegenwartsphilosophie dar und findet in zahlreichen Wissenschaften sowie in Praxis und Therapeutik starke Resonanz. Nach 120 Jahren Wirkungsgeschichte füllt die Bibliothek phänomenologischer Werke zahllose Bücherregale und selbst für Expert:innen ist die Forschungsliteratur mittlerweile unüberschaubar geworden. An allgemeinen Einführungen sowie spezialisierter Fachliteratur mangelt es dabei keineswegs, wohl aber an einem Handbuch, in dem sowohl der Vielfalt der historischen Entwicklungen als auch dem berechtigten Wunsch nach innerer systematischer Kohärenz Rechnung getragen wird. Das Handbuch Phänomenologie schließt diese Lücke. Ausgewiesene Autor:innen bereiten in eigens für diesen Band verfassten Artikeln komplexe sachliche Zusammenhänge übersichtlich auf. Durch seinen Aufbau eignet sich das Handbuch sowohl für Anfänger:innen als auch für Fortgeschrittene. Anhand bündig präsentierter Grundbegriffe und Verfahren konturiert das Handbuch die Spezifik der phänomenologischen Methode, spart dabei jedoch nicht die Kontroversen und methodologischen Neuausrichtungen aus, die von ihrer Lebendigkeit und Vielstimmigkeit zeugen. Ein umfangreicher Schlussteil ist der Rezeption und Anwendung in einzelnen Wirkfeldern gewidmet. Als Hilfsmittel zur eigenständigen Erschließung der phänomenologischen Denkrichtung und zu ihrer Anwendung auf aktuelle Probleme zeichnet sich das Handbuch durch seine Leser:innenfreundlichkeit und einen stark forschungspraktischen Bezug aus. Ein Kompendium, das sich bald als ABC der Phänomenologie etablieren dürfte.

What distinguishes aesthetic thinking from other forms of thinking, such as logical, for instance? In order to clarify this question, the following contribution deals with a reception-aesthetic problem that has been controversially discussed in English-language aesthetics for decades as the ‘paradox of fiction’. It will be shown that the intentional orientation of mind and imagination towards the non-existent, the counterfactual, and the fictive belongs to the decisive peculiarity of aesthetic thinking. Its productivity consists in the process of playing through the possible and imaginable and thereby transcending and thwarting the given and the existing.

Nature is what culture relates to, and culture is what the mind makes of the conditions in which it finds itself. Whether the concept of second nature opens up a more interesting way of thinking about the anthropological problem, that consists in the opposition between mind and nature, is examined in the following contribution, in the light of a debate that arose around John McDowell's book Mind and World. The guiding thesis is that an ontology of mental being is needed to explain the mind's peculiar way of referring to the absent in a present way.

This study provides an overview of philosophical questions relating to sight and vision. It discusses the intertwinement of seeing and ways of seeing against the background of an entirely different theoretical framework. Seeing is both a proven means of acquiring information and a personality-specific way of disclosing the apparent, perceptible world, conditioned by individual and cultural variations. In a peculiar way, the eye holds a middle position between inside and outside of the self and its relations towards itself and others. This book provides a way out of false alternatives by offering a third way with reference to concrete cases of aesthetical and ethical experiences. It will be of particular interest to scholars of the phenomenology and philosophy of perception and it will be valuable to students of philosophy, cultural studies and art.

Es ist keine bloße Metapher, wenn wir sagen, etwas stelle sich jemandem dar. Vielmehr kommt darin zum Ausdruck, dass sprachliche oder bildliche Darstellungen bestimmte Auffassungsweisen ihrer jeweiligen Gegenstände buchstäblich vor-stellen. Auf diese Weise vermitteln Darstellungen zwischen Geist und Welt bzw. zwischen Selbst und Anderen. Gleichgültig, ob wir selbst etwas erzählen oder etwas in der Zeitung lesen, ob wir ein Bild ins Netz stellen oder einen Film schauen, stets haben wir es mit Darstellungen zu tun, die Vorstellungen artikulieren und erzeugen. Der Doppelsinn von Repräsentation als mentale Vorstellung und mediale Darstellung hat darin seinen guten Grund. Das Buch entfaltet eine Darstellungstheorie in therapeutisch-kritischer Absicht. Es zielt darauf, Darstellungspraxen als spezifisch menschlich, weil geistig und freiheitlich zu qualifizieren, um im Streit der Interpretationen bessere von schlechteren unterscheiden zu können. How it is that the mind is directed at the world? Far differently, the world exists in the minds of anyone, because it is mediated through perspectives and perceived only in aspects. No matter whether we tell a story, read something in the newspaper, or watch a movie, we always deal with representations that articulate and generate imaginations. This is the origin of the double meaning of representation as mental imagination and medial presentation. The book develops a theory of representation with a critical and therapeutic intention. It aims at qualifying representational practices as specifically human due to their mental and liberal character in order to be able to distinguish better from worse interpretations.

Kant taught us to think of the faculty of imagination as an ingredient of perception. Vision, thus, is not only opened to the present but also to the absent, for instance through expectations or memories. Our ways of seeing are literally formed by normative presumptions and culturally predetermined ideas. This makes visual perception a sort of an image-making activity in the context of a practice. It is the practice that regulates what can be perceived in which way or what is overlooked. As an activity it is neither solely a pure construction of individual viewpoints, nor a pure representation of the physically present world. Rather, it is the result of the reciprocal tension between the perceiver and the perceived.

Die Frage, was Philosophie ist und wie sie betrieben werden sollte, kann nicht ein fur alle Mal beantwortet werden. Vielmehr muss jede Generation aufs Neue fur sich klaren, was unter einem philosophischen Problem zu verstehen ist und wie man philosophieren sollte. Die Verstandigung daruber, was Philosophie ist, bildet somit einen Teil der philosophischen Tatigkeit selbst. Der Sammelband bietet eine Bestandsaufnahme des Selbstverstandnisses von Philosophinnen und Philosophen unserer Zeit, die reprasentativ fur die Vielfalt der Gegenwartsphilosophie ist. In this paper, the term Parergonality is used for the complete set of conditions that are necessary for the appearance and performance of artworks: be this the room of a museum, the frame of a painting, the stage, the framing of a film scene, the lighting, or the preface. It refers to more than incidental and accompanying aspects of presentation. What parergonality also points to is the constitutively relevant how of artistic representation. How something is shown and seen can, under certain circumstances, be more significant than what is being represented because it guides the attention or opens up a particular perspective. It is therefore necessary to differentiate between various forms of parergonality in the sense of framework factors. The interpretative power of artistic criticism, for instance, or the institutional power of museums constitutes artworks in a different way than staging or performance does. Moreover, artworks often consist of particular forms of framing perspectives in that they create or problematize certain points of view. Artworks thereby illustrate general interpretative frameworks or a culture’s or era’s style of thinking, as one might say with Wittgenstein. Thus, in a way that is analogous to “seeing-as”, artworks can be regarded as various forms of “showing-as”. They can disclose aspects through de-framing and re-shaping. I shall exemplify my thoughts with an artwork by Cristo and Jeanne-Claude. Their wrappings not only implemented resolute de-contextualisations; they are also particularly suitable to shed light on the performative forms of discursive framing.

The difference between the technical and the living is increasingly difficult to define the more it is undermined in actual practice. By now, the interconnectedness between natural and technical conditions of the human form of life is not a matter of ontologically isolated spheres and cannot be described anymore by using hypostatizing vocabulary. Referring to classical authors of philosophy of technology the paper portrays the principal ambivalences of the use of technics. These should be carefully scrutinized so as to leave the original imago of a technical-free-zone behind and concentrate on the dynamics between the natural and the artificial instead. Nevertheless, central conceptual distinctions cannot be dismissed altogether.
