47Relative ContradictorinessLogica Universalis 19 (4): 553-583. 2025.Our thesis about contradictoriness is a threefold one: it is a _relative_, theory-dependent concept; it is a synonym of _absurdity_, which is a constant of falsity; it is to be used as a _definiens_ of sentential negation and truth-values, contrary to its usual presentation. First of all, we review both the motivation of such a thesis and its philosophical consequences about the nature of negation and truth-values. Then we propose a formal background encompassing the relativity of contradictorin…Read more

1277The Logical Burdens of Proof. Assertion and HypothesisLogic and Logical Philosophy 26 (4): 509-530. 2017.The paper proposes two logical analyses of (the norms of) justification. In a first, realist-minded case, truth is logically independent from justification and leads to a pragmatic logic LP including two epistemic and pragmatic operators, namely, assertion and hypothesis. In a second, antirealist-minded case, truth is not logically independent from justification and results in two logical systems of information and justification: AR4 and AR4¢, respectively, provided with a question-answer semant…Read more

919Non-Epicurean DesiresFilosofia Unisinos 17 (1): 63-68. 2016.In this paper, it is argued that there can be necessary and non-natural desires. After a discussion about what seems wrong with such desires, Epicurus’ classification of desires is treated similarly to Kripke’s treatment of the Kantian table of judgments. A sample of three cases is suggested to make this point.

19Mixed Political InferencesIn Timothy J. Madigan & Jean-Yves Béziau (eds.), Universal Logic, Ethics, and Truth: Essays in Honor of John Corcoran (1937-2021), Springer Nature Switzerland. pp. 185-199. 2024.The relation between logic and ethics is discussed through the reflections proposed by Corcoran. Although the latter claimed the inseparability of both normative disciplines and their reciprocal virtues, a number of arguments have been advanced for their complete separation by rejecting the alleged validity of mixed inferences, i.e., those inferences including both descriptive and non-descriptive statements. After examining the import of logic into the area of ethics, an isomorphism argument is …Read more

37Introduction. Logic and PoliticsHistory and Philosophy of Logic 45 (1): 1-3. 2024.The aim of this special issue is to explore the intersections of logic, intended as the formal science of valid consequence, and politics, the practical science of associated life. The analyses here provided deal with the theme in two ways: by considering what logic can do for politics, so proposing possible formalizations of political arguments, or using logical notions and tools to interpret political facts and problems; by considering what politics can do for logic, so examining how logical c…Read more

43Logical Organization of Philosophical ConceptsTopoi 43 (5): 1593-1605. 2024.It is argued that the theory of opposition is in position to contribute as a formal method of conceptual engineering, by means of an increasing dichotomy-making process that augments the number of elements into any structured lexical field. After recalling the roots of this theory and its logical tenets, it is shown how the processes of expansion and contraction of discourse can modify a lexical field and, with it, our collective representation of ideas. This theory can also bring some order to …Read more

86Quantifying Statements (Why ‘Every Thing’ is Not ‘Everything’, Among Other ‘Thing’s)Logica Universalis 18 (1): 185-207. 2024.The present paper wants to develop a formal semantics about a special class of formulas: quantifying statements, which are a kind of predicative statements where both subject- and predicate terms are quantifier expressions like ‘everything’, ‘something’, and ‘nothing’. After showing how talking about nothingness makes sense despite philosophical objections, I contend that there are two sorts of meaning in phrases including ‘thing’, viz. as an individual (e.g. ‘some thing’) or as a property (e.g.…Read more

65Legal Gaps and their Logical FormsStudia Humana 13 (3): 23-40. 2024.The concept of legal gap is tackled from a number of logical perspectives and semantic methods. After presenting our own goal (Section 1), a first introduction into legal logic refers to Bobbio’s works and his formalization of legal statements (Sections 2 and 3). Then Woleński’s contribution to the area is taken into account through his reference to the distinction between two juridical systems (viz. Common Law vs Civil Law) and the notion of conditional norms (Section 4). The notion of reason i…Read more

49Logic and Law: A Matter of Values Behind Content and FormStudia Humana 13 (3): 1-3. 2024.This special issue on Logic and Law consists of four research papers and one interview focusing on epistemological reflections on relationships between logic and law, whether in a reductionist or complementary approach. Logic aims to elucidate through formal frameworks, yet it often grapples with the intricate nuances of everyday legal discourse. While law endeavors to delineate permissible conduct within defined jurisdictions, it often encounters challenges stemming from the ambiguity of terms,…Read more

82Things May Not Be Simple: On Wittgenstein’s Internal RelationsLogica Universalis 16 (4): 621-641. 2022.Wittgenstein took the _Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus_ to be eventually invalidated by logical atomism. Our main thesis is that it can be revalidated, provided that we subtract the thesis 2.02 (“The object is simple.”) from it: atoms are not simple objects but, rather, bits of information the objects are made of. Starting from an introductory discussion about what is meant by a ‘logic of colors’, an explanatory framework is then proposed in the form of a partition semantics. The philosophical pr…Read more

1308Another Side of Categorical Propositions: The Keynes–Johnson Octagon of OppositionsHistory and Philosophy of Logic 44 (4): 459-475. 2023.The aim of this paper is to make sense of the Keynes–Johnson octagon of oppositions. We will discuss Keynes' logical theory, and examine how his view is reflected on this octagon. Then we will show how this structure is to be handled by means of a semantics of partition, thus computing logical relations between matching formulas with a semantic method that combines model theory and Boolean algebra.

70A Bitstring Semantics for Calculus CLIn Jean-Yves Beziau & Ioannis Vandoulakis (eds.), The Exoteric Square of Opposition, Birkhauser. 2022.The aim of this chapter is to develop a semantics for Calculus CL. CL is a diagrammatic calculus based on a logic machine presented by Johann Christian Lange in 1714, which combines features of Euler-, Venn-type, tree diagrams, squares of oppositions etc. In this chapter, it is argued that a Boolean account of formal ontology in CL helps to deal with logical oppositions and inferences of extended syllogistics. The result is a combination of Lange’s diagrams with an algebraic semantics of terms: …Read more

1462A General Semantics for Logics of Affirmation and NegationJournal of Applied Logics - IfCoLoG Journal of Logics and Their Applications 8 (2): 593-609. 2021.A general framework for translating various logical systems is presented, including a set of partial unary operators of affirmation and negation. Despite its usual reading, affirmation is not redundant in any domain of values and whenever it does not behave like a full mapping. After depicting the process of partial functions, a number of logics are translated through a variety of affirmations and a unique pair of negations. This relies upon two preconditions: a deconstruction of truth-values as…Read more

773A Judgmental Reconstruction of some of Professor Woleński’s logical and philosophical writingsStudia Humana 9 (3): 72-103. 2020.Roman Suszko said that “Obviously, any multiplication of logical values is a mad idea and, in fact, Łukasiewicz did not actualize it.” The aim of the present paper is to qualify this ‘obvious’ statement through a number of logical and philosophical writings by Professor Jan Woleński, all focusing on the nature of truth-values and their multiple uses in philosophy. It results in a reconstruction of such an abstract object, doing justice to what Suszko held a ‘mad’ project within a generalized log…Read more

821Quasi-concepts of logicIn Alexandre Costa-Leite (ed.), Abstract Consequence and Logics - Essays in Honor of Edelcio G. de Souza, College Publications. pp. 245-266. 2020.A analysis of some concepts of logic is proposed, around the work of Edelcio de Souza. Two of his related issues will be emphasized, namely: opposition, and quasi-truth. After a review of opposition between logical systems [2], its extension to many-valuedness is considered following a special semantics including partial operators [13]. Following this semantic framework, the concepts of antilogic and counterlogic are translated into opposition-forming operators [15] and specified as special case…Read more

837Negation and Dichotomy (edited book)Kazimierz Wielki University Press. 2009.The present contribution might be regarded as a kind of defense of the common sense in logic. It is demonstrated that if the classical negation is interpreted as the minimal negation with n = 2 truth values, then deviant logics can be conceived as extension of the classical bivalent frame. Such classical apprehension of negation is possible in non- classical logics as well, if truth value is internalized and bivalence is replaced by bipartition.

1163End of the square?South American Journal of Logic 4 (2): 485-505. 2018.It has been recently argued that the well-known square of opposition is a gathering that can be reduced to a one-dimensional figure, an ordered line segment of positive and negative integers [3]. However, one-dimensionality leads to some difficulties once the structure of opposed terms extends to more complex sets. An alternative algebraic semantics is proposed to solve the problem of dimensionality in a systematic way, namely: partition (or bitstring) semantics. Finally, an alternative geometry…Read more

51Jan Łukasiewicz: Écrits Logiques Et PhilosophiquesLibrairie Philosophique Vrin. 2013.English summary: Jan Lukasiewicz (1878-1956) was one of the most important members of the Lwow-Warsaw school of logic. The thirteen translated articles in this volume demonstrate the protean form of Lukasiewiczs work, from his texts on Aristotle and the principle of non-contradiction and syllogistics to modal logic, intuitionism, and multivalent logics. The articles show in particular his preoccupations with logical precision and the problem of human liberty. French description: Avec Kazimierz T…Read more

4372Relative CharityRevista Brasileira de Filosofia 233 159-172. 2009.Our aim is to propose a non-referential semantics for the principle of logical charity: neither logical universalism (one logic, one way of thinking), nor logical relativism (several logics, several ways of thinking) afford an adequate conceptual framework to interpret the meaning of any speech act. But neither of them is totally wrong, either. The point is to know to which extent each of these views is partly right, thus leading to a more consensual but paradoxical-sounding "relative principle …Read more

766Wittgenstein's AttitudesIn Alexander Hieke & Hannes Leitgeb (eds.), Reduktion und Elimination in Philosophie und den Wissenschaften, . pp. 289-291. 2008.What's wrong with modalities in (Wittgenstein 1922)? In (Suszko 1968), the writer argued that "Wittgenstein was somewhat confused and wrong in certain points. For example, he did not see the clear-cut distinction between language (theory) and metalanguage (metatheory): a confusion between use and mention of expressions". Furthermore, a modal logic was proposed in (von Wright 1986) as depicting Wittgenstein's bipolarity thesis in a S5 frame. The aim of the present paper is to deal with the specif…Read more

1296Believing the self-contradictoryIn Dariusz Lukasiewicz & Roger Pouivet (eds.), The Right to Believe: Perspectives in Religious Epistemology, De Gruyter. pp. 127-140. 2011.An argument for the rationality of religious belief in the existence of God is defended. After reviewing three preconditions for rational belief, I show reasons to privilege the criterion of consistency. Taking the inconsistency of the religious belief in God and the belief in the scientific world picture as the impediment to a rational belief in God, I propose that we can overcome this objection by assuming, firstly, that God is a universal class. This allows us to put the problem of God in se…Read more

1039Two Indian dialectical logics: saptabhangi and catuskotiJournal of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research 27 (1): 45-75. 2010.A rational interpretation is proposed for two ancient Indian logics: the Jaina saptabhaṅgī, and the Mādhyamika catuṣkoṭi. It is argued that the irrationality currently imputed to these logics relies upon some philosophical preconceptions inherited from Aristotelian metaphysics. This misunderstanding can be corrected in two steps: by recalling their assumptions about truth; by reconstructing their ensuing theory of judgment within a common conceptual framework
