Can we rethink space and inhabiting from a body-centred perspective that considers the dynamic interaction between humans and the environment as affecting and being affected? This paper explores theoretical concepts in practice, identifying the types of spaces operationalising this idea and the practices necessary to realise it. Humans appear increasingly detached from the physical and material realms. However, it is argued that we are entering a phase characterised by a renewed focus on the body and materially grounded elements. Anthropocene represents a crucial turning point, prompting a reevaluation of human engagement with the world and envisioning new methods to address the social, political and epistemological changes brought about by global warming. A body-centred paradigm is proposed as a solution for embracing the challenges of a transforming world, examining implications on individual (the body), societal (the social body), and cultural levels (the cultural body). This lens thoroughly explores the connection between humans and the environment. The concept of environmental temperature will serve as a tool for applying this worldview, extending beyond scientific definitions to encompass the dynamic between human, non-human, and material bodies. This concept and the methodology proposed for applying it will highlight the significance of residual spaces and art-architectural practices as a starting point for developing new ways of inhabiting our world. The hypothesis is that contemporary practices, such as performative installation and transitory architectures, may be viewed as forms of environmental occupation, revealing possibilities for reusing and reactivating unseen spaces. This approach fosters attunement and an ethic of care, reshaping our understanding of space and habitation

L'esperienza artistica si inscrive nelle pratiche contemporanee che guardano a un’unione di competenze, restituendo tanto il dato scientifico del problema quanto le percezioni intime legate ad esso. In modo intuitivo, ci avvicina alla causa delle Grave di Ciano ricordandoci che è dalle pratiche del quotidiano e dall’agire sulla base di un pensiero comune che possiamo iniziare, nel nostro piccolo, a fronteggiare l’emergenza del cambiamento climatico. È un piccolo passo per produrre quel sapere integrato di cui si tratterà teoricamente, mettendo in atto un processo di creazione di sguardi ecologici condivisi, di un sapere considerabile come common basato sulla scientificità del dato reale. Ripartendo dal corpo e dall’esperienza dei corpi nell’ambiente possiamo generare saperi e pratiche comuni e di commoning che, andando oltre alla scissione tra natura e cultura, rimettano la cultura al servizio della natura – da cui essa stessa è originata.

Le Grave di Ciano sono un'area naturale situata sulle sponde del medio corso del fiume Piave, in provincia di Treviso. Ecosistema tutelato e ricchissimo dal punto di vista naturalistico, le Grave rischiano oggi di essere distrutte a causa di un progetto, silenziato dai media regionali e nazionali, che prevede la costruzione di un bacino di laminazione. Si tratta di un caso paradigmatico, che fa luce su complesse dinamiche di potere ed economiche, sempre più urgenti da analizzare nell’epoca della crisi ecologica. Questo Glossario esplora la vicenda da diverse angolazioni, illustrando le peculiarità naturalistiche del territorio, esaminandone i risvolti politici, cercandone i sottintesi economici, ma soprattutto raccogliendo le voci di chi – dalla società civile all’accademia – vede nelle Grave il problema centrale del nostro tempo: quale Terra vogliamo abitare?

La prospettiva transdisciplinare è il tentativo di costruire un nuovo sapere umano. Transdisciplinare si dice di un metodo per lo studio di problemi complessi che rifiuta l’ottica riduzionista dell’approccio scientifico convenzionale. Al contrario, mira all’integrazione o unione di diverse branche di apprendimento o campi di competenza, solitamente separati, al fine di affrontare la complessità intrinseca di alcune questioni urgenti della situazione umana attuale. A differenza, quindi, della multidisciplinarità che giustappone distinti saperi o dell’interdisciplinarità che confronta molteplici visioni disciplinari su un unico problema comune, un metodo transdisciplinare si preoccupa di proporre nuove prospettive, basandosi sulla necessità di trovare soluzioni alternative che uniscano metodologie plurali per crearne di totalmente inedite. In questo contesto, tuttavia, intendiamo transdisciplinare con un significato che si propone di andare oltre all’accezione comune: superando i confini dell’idea di identità tutta umana, transdisciplinare si può dire di un sapere integrato volto alla tutela delle molteplici vie di accesso al mondo e, quindi, non solo umane. Ma in che senso si può sostenere che questa nuova idea di transdisciplinare sia essenzialmente biodiversa? Come costruire un sapere che sia capace di rivoluzionare il nostro modo di vedere il mondo?

The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibilities opened up by radical interventions in public space: is it possible to foster reflection and create a critical methodology for analysing the topic of Commons in the urban context? Presenting the project “Stente: Residual Zones” as an example, the aim is to explore these questions using Umeå as a case study. Through the creation of an art/architectural object, the project seeks to use artistic and architectural practices as tools to engage city residents in an active dialogue about Common spaces. Starting with a theoretical framework for situating the critical potential of art and architectural objects in public spaces, in this paper the project is seen as an example of a temporary critical moving device, gathering and amplifying the voices of the inhabitants through the city: it aims to represent an open-ended invitation to reinterpret the boundaries between nature and the city, posing itself as a radical (from the latin radicalis) form of dissensus (Rancière 2010). The experiment was conducted at the Umeå School of Architecture between March and May 2024 as part of the “Designing the Contemporary City” research group at Umeå University.

Beginning with the work of Olafur Eliasson, with particular reference to the recent exhibition “Trembling Horizons” but not limited to it, a number of works representative of an artistic vision that might be called eco-logical are analyzed. Not only by explicitly thematizing the issue of the environmental crisis, Eliasson's works seem to materially express the demands of theorists who question how art can actively respond to the need for a shift in outlook that characterizes current events. Starting from the idea of art as praxis, which allows the viewer to regard himself or herself and to place himself or herself in relation to what surrounds us – human and non-human – Eliasson's works act on the intrinsic objecthood of the work itself by creating a relationship with otherness and datity. They generate, therefore, a feeling of proximity, which concretizes a meaning of creativity in a transformative and site-specific sense; they promote an eco-logic that has its basis in a nomadic and depotentiated vision of subjectivity, engendering a feeling of interconnectedness and care. It will be argued in this paper the need to rethink art in these terms by hypothesizing a particular efficacy of some works that actively work in public space: places where the split between nature and culture has taken place, urban and public space are privileged contexts to actively promote the overcoming of this fracture and generate ethically responsible, already intrinsically ecological subjects.
