Intento di questo numero di «Rivista di storia della filosofia» è offrire un campionario e un network di casi di studio, volti a ricostruire i principali passaggi della storia dell'indignazione dall’antichità all’Ottocento, passando per le sue principali trasformazioni e rimodulazioni / The aim of this issue of "Rivista di storia della filosofia" is to provide a selection of case studies and a network of examples designed to trace the main developments in the history of indignation from antiquity to the nineteenth century, highlighting its key transformations and reinterpretations.

This paper explores the complex relationship between power and honor in Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan. First, it shows that individuals and systems (such as the commonwealth) derive their power from the recognition they receive from others. Second, it examines the tension between the spontaneous, intersubjective dynamics of recognition and the formalized, juridical logic of the social contract, particularly in the context of sovereignty. Third, it argues that the sovereign’s power is contingent on popular recognition and that the failure to secure this recognition undermines both the sovereign’s authority and the stability of the political order. In this way, the paper challenges the traditional view of Hobbesian individuals as isolated, atomistic entities whose conflicts can only be resolved through the conventional institution of an absolute sovereign.

Abstractabstract:This paper discusses the anthropology, ethics, and politics of Helvetius, focusing on the theme of power and the passions that gravitate around it, and highlighting the transition from a position that could be broadly defined as "anarchic" (all powers are bad) to one that realistically takes power for granted as an insurmountable horizon (and which leads to the future-laden idea of a "democratic despotism"). By analyzing these themes, it questions the common interpretation of Helvetius's thought as a compact block ("Le système d'Helvétius"), emphasizing the way in which the theoretical reworkings presented in De l'homme must be understood in light of the internal tensions of De l'esprit.

Le Traité Théologico-Politique, publié anonymement en 1670, fut sans doute le livre le plus scandaleux du XVIIe siècle, et pour cause : l'emploi d'une méthode critique radicale pour dévoiler les mystères du pouvoir théologique et politique faisait de cet ouvrage un traité aussi stimulant que polémique. Après trois cent cinquante ans, le Traité demeure un modèle de réflexion sur la politique, la philologie, la métaphysique et la religion. Dans ce volume, le lecteur trouvera un commentaire suivi de l'ouvrage. Grâce au travail collectif des vingt-huit contributeurs, il pourra comprendre le détail du discours de Spinoza ainsi que saisir la trame de fond de la pensée spinoziste. L'ouvrage se compose de deux parties : le commentaire proprement dit et une section consacrée aux principaux problèmes qui animent le débat contemporain sur Spinoza.

This article focuses on three of the affects discussed in Spinoza’s Ethics: pride, esteem, and scorn. At first, it focuses mainly on the delusional aspect Spinoza attributes to these passions as a matter of definition, emphasizing the monological and self-referential dimension in which they seem to imprison the subject. It then analyzes the reference to a notion of justice contained in their definitions, and how this triggers a struggle for recognition. In a third moment, it highlights the political efficacy of these affects in producing not only conflict but also social bonds. Finally, it concludes by considering how Spinoza’s treatment of these affects fits within the framework of the more general problem of the relationship between passion and reason.

Cet article s’intéresse au Contrat social de Rousseau afin d’examiner si cet ouvrage permet de penser une révolte populaire contre l’État et, si oui, à quelles conditions. Dans cette perspective, nous nous concentrons principalement sur quelques détails apparemment marginaux : l’oscillation, par exemple, entre une conception de la « crise » comme occasion de régénération ou de renaissance de l’État ; l’hésitation entre une conception des mœurs et des coutumes comme formant le cœur de la législation et qui garantit la survivance du corps en deçà de la condition de mort apparente engendrée par les conflits, et une conception dans laquelle ces mœurs et ces coutumes s’avèrent constituer le résultat du conflit lui-même ; l’indécision entre une définition de la légitimité politique comme entièrement réabsorbée par la simple légalité et une autre où cette légitimité déborde toutes les formes et les limitations légales. De cette façon, l’article met en évidence la présence, dans le Contrat lui-même, de deux logiques opposées. D’une part, une logique d’après laquelle toute séparation entre le peuple et l’État disparaît. Dans cette perspective, tout contraste entre les deux pôles est inconcevable, et ce qui à première vue semble être une révolte du peuple contre l’État doit être lu comme une intervention du souverain visant à rétablir l’ordre légitime violé. D’autre part, une logique qui admet au contraire une relative autonomie du peuple par rapport aux institutions établies, et qui par là même permet de penser un conflit entre les deux pôles.

l Discorso sull’ineguaglianza sembra scandito, come una via crucis, in una serie di tappe che dall’aurora dell’umanità condurrebbero direttamente alle tenebre del dispotismo: l’assoggettamento alle comodità della vita domestica, il trionfo della vanità, la strutturazione dei rapporti di dominio, la trappola di un patto iniquo, la concentrazione del potere nelle mani di una casta privilegiata e infine del solo tiranno. Come mostra questo libro, la linearità apparente di questa traiettoria è tuttavia contestata dal contrappunto di una serie di sentieri interrotti, da una temporalità plurale nella quale i tempi si accavallano, si intrecciano, collidono. È la storia dell’affetto e della libertà che cementano la famiglia; la storia del desiderio di stima e rispetto che fissa i primi doveri della civiltà; la storia dell’eroe che in nome della comunione delle terre contrasta la loro recinzione o del brigante che si sottrae alla servitù del lavoro salariato. È la storia dell’uguaglianza che salva chi sa custodirla dal reciproco asservimento di proprietari e nullatenenti e, soprattutto, la storia della democrazia, dei popoli soggetti unicamente alle leggi che loro stessi si sono dati, risollevati dall’avvilimento della tirannide al costo del sacrificio delle comodità e della vita. È la storia delle eccezioni che infrangono la linearità della caduta e rendono visibili le possibilità sepolte ma mai annientate dall’avanzata dell’ineguaglianza.

Besides indicating the fundamental themes of the various contributions that come together in this monographic section, the purpose of this introduction is to recall the main features of the Hobbesian concept of power, starting from the belief that Hobbes’ philosophy is above all a phi-losophy of power. Based on a radical materialistic ontology, the Hobbesian semantics of power takes on different variations in the particular discursive fields it crosses, which in turn significantly influence its movement. The double dependence on the authority of the sovereign and on the opinion of the people ultimately highlights the aporetic character of the Hobbesian notion of power.
