Hume’s Law holds that normative conclusions cannot be validly derived from purely descriptive premises. This paper examines that challenge in relation to the Ethics of Metaphysical Congruence (MetaEthics), a framework that grounds moral evaluation in Reality, Awareness, Unity, and agency. It argues that Hume’s Law remains valid against attempts to derive command-like obligation from bare facts, but that it is often overextended into a broader rejection of objective morality. The central distinction is between obligation and moral evaluation. MetaEthics does derive moral evaluation from facts, but it does not derive external obligation from facts. Its third axiom is explicitly normative: morality is measured by congruence with Unity. The paper argues that this normative step is not arbitrary, because it grounds moral evaluation in the foundational trait of the non-optional Reality/Awareness field. At the level of agency, this criterion is expressed through the Non-Undercutting Principle, which identifies actions as congruent or incongruent according to whether they undercut the enabling conditions of agency. The conclusion is that Hume’s Law blocks one route from fact to morality, but not every route to objective and non-arbitrary moral evaluation.

The Münchhausen Trilemma is often taken to show that attempts at ultimate justification terminate in one of three unsatisfactory outcomes: infinite regress, circularity, or a dogmatic foundational stopping point. This paper examines the trilemma in relation to the Ethics of Metaphysical Congruence, a metaethical framework that grounds moral normativity in non optional metaphysical structures. The central claim is that the force of the trilemma against foundationalist ethics depends heavily on whether the proposed foundation is arbitrary. If a foundation is merely stipulated, inherited, or selected by preference, the foundationalist horn remains vulnerable. However, if a foundation cannot be coherently denied without performative inconsistency, it occupies a different justificatory position. The paper argues that Reality and Awareness, understood minimally as that something is the case and that experience occurs, function in this way within the Ethics of Metaphysical Congruence. The aim is not to dissolve the Münchhausen Trilemma as a formal structure, but to show that non arbitrary foundationalism may weaken the deadlock force usually associated with its foundationalist horn.

This paper develops the Ethics of Metaphysical Congruence by deriving the Non-Undercutting Principle (NUP) as the first operational constraint of the framework. Earlier papers established Reality and Awareness as non-optional metaphysical conditions, Unity as their foundational structural trait, and morality as congruence with Unity. The present paper argues that agency, as a localized expression within the Reality/Awareness field, must instantiate the same structural coherence. This yields an Agency Triad of Identity, Causality, and Teleology as minimal conditions of coherent action. From these deeper conditions arise practical Enabling Conditions of Agency, including Reality Contact, Cause and Effect, Shared Reference, and Mutual Respect. Because agents necessarily rely upon such conditions in acting at all, no agent may coherently act in ways that undercut them. This principle is developed as a structural constraint internal to agency rather than an externally imposed moral law. Illustrative applications and objections are considered.

This paper develops the third axiom of the Ethics of Metaphysical Congruence by arguing that moral evaluation is determined by congruence with Unity. Building on prior work establishing Reality and Awareness as non-optional metaphysical structures and Unity (structural coherence) as their foundational trait, the paper addresses the normative transition from metaphysical structure to ethical criterion. It argues that if moral normativity is to avoid arbitrariness, its evaluative standard must be anchored in what is metaphysically non-optional. Unity, as the structurally prior trait of the non-optional Reality/Awareness field, therefore functions as the appropriate axis of moral appraisal. The paper clarifies that Unity is not to be maximized or produced but serves as a structural condition of intelligibility, and that moral evaluation concerns congruence rather than aggregation. It responds to objections concerning the alleged descriptiveness of Unity and the indeterminacy of congruence, maintaining that the criterion operates at the level of justification rather than prescription. The result is a non-arbitrary meta-ethical standard that precedes, but does not yet operationalize, concrete moral rules.

This paper argues that Unity, understood as structural coherence, is the most fundamental trait of the non-optional field constituted by Reality and Awareness. Reality is treated minimally as the fact that something obtains; Awareness is treated minimally as the fact that experience occurs. Given these minimal characterizations, the central question is whether there exists a structural feature shared by Reality and Awareness that can be defended as primary across divergent ontological and metaphysical perspectives. The claim advanced here is that Unity, lawful togetherness, integrated relational order, and field-level coherence, is such a feature. The argument proceeds along two complementary lines. First, Unity is defended as a transcendental condition of intelligibility: denial, doubt, and suspension of judgment presuppose a coherent field within which meaning and reference operate. Second, Unity is shown to be prior to other putatively fundamental traits, such as time, space, causality, entropy, information, symmetry, continuity, intentionality, or first-person perspective, because these candidates are intelligible only within an already coherent domain. The paper concludes by clarifying the meaning of Unity, distinguishing it from sameness and from mere logical consistency, and by indicating how Unity may later function as an ethical criterion without yet undertaking that normative development.

This paper addresses the grounding problem for moral normativity: how moral requirements can possess unconditional authority rather than merely conditional force. It argues that dominant strategies in ethical theory, including value-based, procedural, rationalist, naturalistic realist, and constitutivist approaches, share a common structural limitation. Each derives normativity from premises that an agent can coherently reject, leaving the resulting authority dependent on acceptance or endorsement. To overcome this limitation, the paper articulates a stricter grounding requirement: a satisfactory foundation for normativity must be non-optional, in the sense that denying it results in performative incoherence, whereby the denial presupposes what it seeks to reject. The paper then argues that two metaphysically minimal structures satisfy this requirement: Reality, understood as the fact that something is the case, and Awareness, understood as the fact that experience occurs. Any intelligible stance, including denial, doubt, or skepticism, presupposes both. On this basis, the paper claims that moral normativity can be grounded in non-optional structures without appeal to evaluative assumptions, justificatory procedures, or privileged conceptions of agency. While the argument does not specify substantive moral content or decision procedures, it aims to show that a non-arbitrary grounding of normativity is possible in principle.

Moral theory often fails to secure a universal, non-arbitrary ground, sliding into relativism or dogma. This white paper develops MetaEthics: the Ethics of Metaphysical Congruence (henceforth MetaEthics), a framework that anchors normativity in Reality and Awareness, the constitutive preconditions of agency, and treats morality as a coordination technology for coherent action. Axiom 1: agents cannot coherently step outside Reality and Awareness; Axiom 2: the most fundamental trait of this field is unity, the structural necessity of coherence; Axiom 3: actions are morally better insofar as they show congruence with that same structural coherence. From these, we derive the Non-Undercutting Principle (NUP): No agent may coherently act in ways that undercut the enabling conditions of agency. We articulate the Enabling Conditions of Agency (ECAs)—Reality-Contact, Cause & Effect, Shared Reference, Mutual Respect, organized by the Metaphysical Triad (Identity, Causality, Teleology). We then introduce the MetaEthics Congruence Method (MCM), an operational discipline built around Hard Gates (non-derogable ECA thresholds), Tripwires (pre-committed review triggers) and Indicators (empirical cues), with optional domain Guardrails. Applications span personal conduct, institutional design and policy. The paper compares MetaEthics with leading alternatives and addresses standard objections. We argue that MetaEthics functions as a universal, non-arbitrary and testable protocol of coherence, a moral infrastructure for coordinated agency across contexts.
