This paper is the product of a roundtable discussion held at the international conference Horizons of Engagement: Eternalizing Bourdieu, organized by the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory of Belgrade, Serbia, the Centre for Advanced Studies of The University of Rijeka, Croatia, the?cole Normale Sup?rieure of Paris, France, and the French Institute in Serbia. The event was planned on the occasion of the ninetieth anniversary of the birth of one of the world?s leading sociologists - Pierre Bourdieu. The greatest indicator of the scope of Bourdieu?s influence is the fact that he has become the world?s most cited sociologist, ahead of?mile Durkheim, and the world?s second most cited author in social sciences and the humanities, after Michel Foucault and ahead of Jacques Derrida. As part of this discussion, we address the subject of?Bourdieu and Politics?, politics - broadly constructed. We evoke Pierre Bourdieu?s involvement in public affairs during the 1990s, while taking into account the concept of the collective intellectual that Bourdieu introduced into social sciences by giving it a specific meaning.

L'oeuvre de Pierre Bourdieu est aujourd'hui "utilisée", citée, discutée, critiquée, dans les domaines les plus divers du savoir contemporain : de la sociologie à la philosophie en passant par l'ethnologie, la linguistique, la science politique ou l'économie institutionnaliste. Passant en revue chronologiquement l'essentiel de son oeuvre, ces Lectures de Bourdieu en facilitent une approche génétique, tout en prenant la mesure de la diversité des terrains explorés. Elles permettent aussi de percevoir un style de pensée, un "habitus sociologique" marqué par la réflexivité, tout en inventoriant la "boîte à outil" conceptuels élaborés par Bourdieu (habitus, capital, champ). Ecartant la recherche de l'originalité à tout prix et la fidélité religieuse à un auteur canonique, ces Lectures de Bourdieu invitent à un rapport réaliste à l'héritage théorique de Bourdieu. Il s'agit, d'une part, de proposer un accès à l'oeuvre, de favoriser l'acquisition de schèmes d'interprétation et d'un style de recherche et d'encourager ainsi la lecture des textes originaux. Il s'agit, d'autre part, en se démarquant des travers de l'application mécaniques, tout en renonçant aux profits faciles de la distinction à tout prix et du dépassement à tout crin, d'inviter à l'appropriation active d'un mode de pensée scientifique qui n'exclut en rien les rectifications.

The article shows that the theme of the doux commerce went along with the construction of Europe since its inception, and that it has thus contributed to masking the political dimension of the unification and convergence process, in support of the predominance of a pacified and irenic vision of the commercial economy and international trade. In the current context of the Eurozone crisis, the conflictual dimension of competitive processes, their link with the dynamics of international tensions between States, are strongly reassessed.

In this interview Frédéric Lebaron reflects on his relation to Marx and to Marxist traditions, in particular regarding the governing orientation of his research project. The interview goes on to examine the relations and confrontations which exist between various Marxisms and sociological approaches, with specific reference to the question of the “Marxo-Weberian” paradigm. A number of recent works in the field of sociology are also discussed, notably those by Julian Mischi on French communism. More generally, F. Lebaron reappraises the question of the possible meeting-points between various readings of Marx and certain approaches drawing on the project of Pierre Bourdieu, despite the divergence that exists between them on certain essential points, in terms of their epistemological presuppositions. F. Lebaron therefore highlights the convergence between traditions which do indeed differ, but whose complementarity appears to him fruitful.

Genre peu légitime du point de vue académique, la production d'essais économiques est pourtant un élément important dans la diffusion en France d'un sens commun politico-économique, plutôt planificateur et «keynésien» dans les années 1950-1970, néo-libéral depuis les années 1980. Après plusieurs décennies, ce genre s'est développé et transformé, mais sa position sur le marché éditorial reste, semble-t-il, relativement solide. Particulièrement mobilisé lors du changement de régime économique de 1982-1983, avec le basculement du Parti socialiste dans le «cercle de la raison» libérale, ce genre est, précisément, une composante à part entière de la construction d'un ordre social libéral dans les années 1980 et 1990. The use of economic analogies by Bourdieu has often been the object of much criticism. For some scholars, it reveals an “economistic” vision of the social world too much inspired by neoclassical economics. For others, it is a kind of mechanical metaphor transposed to cultural phenomena in a determinist way, as in the holistic (Marxist) tradition. To understand this usage and to refute these contradictory criticisms, we return to and focus on the very first occurrences in the 1958–1966 period – the focus of our article – of what Bourdieu would call a “general economy of practices” in his book Esquisse d’une théorie de la pratique. Two central aspects, often forgotten by critics, are presented here: first, the close but very particular link between his work and economics as a growing scientific discipline during these years; second, the criticisms Bourdieu makes of the economic model as a general scientific tool for the social sciences. If one insists only on one of the two sides of the coin, one risks misunderstanding Bourdieu’s original scientific habitusand intellectual project. By contrast, this “double” position opens the possibility of an “integrated” vision of social and economic factors of practices, thanks to the introduction of the “cultural” and above all the “symbolic” dimensions of social life.
