Background Code status determination typically relies on the expected benefits and harms of treatment intensification and patient values and preferences. Resource availability may also influence code status decisions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for critical care often exceeded the available resources. This study investigated the association between critical care occupancy and code status decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult patients hospitalized at Geneva University Hospital for acute COVID-19-related illness during two successive pandemic waves, in spring and autumn 2020. Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the association between critical care occupancy at admission and code status attribution while accounting for clinical and demographic characteristics, including age, sex, ROX index (pulse oximetry/fraction of inspired oxygen/respiratory rate), comorbidities, malignancy, nationality, insurance, and socioeconomic status. Results A total of 2,122 patients were included in the analysis. Higher critical care occupancy was associated with an increased likelihood of being assigned an intensive care unit (ICU)-ineligible code status. The odds ratios (ORs) were 1.61 (95% CI 1.11–2.32), 1.59 (1.11–2.28) and 1.71 (1.06–2.76) for critical care occupancy levels of 100–119%, 120–139% and ≥ 140%, respectively, compared with the prepandemic baseline capacity. Other factors significantly associated with the assignment of an ICU-ineligible code status included age 70–79 years (OR 8.56; 95% CI 4.12–17.77), 80–89 years (OR 32.78; 95% CI 16.16–66.50) and ≥90 years (OR 49.04; 95% CI 23.05–104.31) and a higher comorbidity index (OR 1.22; 95% CI 1.07–1.39). Conversely, complementary hospitalization insurance was associated with lower odds of being assigned an ICU-ineligible code status (OR 0.52; 95% CI 0.29–0.92). Conclusions Our study revealed a positive association between critical care occupancy and ICU-ineligible code status, suggesting the presence of implicit triaging during periods of high resource strain. This raises several ethical concerns, including the use of non-consensual triage criteria, lack of transparency and the risk of moral distress for healthcare professionals.

A socioeconomic and demographic analysis of U.S. Google Trends for queries about Business Ethics and Greed is proposed in the context of the 2008 financial crisis. The framework is grounded in the ethical decision‐making literature. Two models using micro and macro‐type variables are tested using GLM and GEE regression techniques. The frequency of these Google queries varies positively with the ratio of females, educational attainment, younger adult age, some measures of economic hardship or inequalities, and the lesser the weight of the finance industry represented in each State. The frequency of queries intensifies for these same socioeconomic and demographic categories, in the aftermath of the financial crisis. This article is the first to study the salience of business ethics as an issue in the empirical literature using a nationwide database. It also provides a first empirical study in the specialized literature on “ethics in a time of crisis”. This study lays a preliminary groundwork to identify pro‐ethical reform segments of the population, with practical use for financial regulatory agencies.

In Nietzsche’s musical aesthetics, Wagner’s name dominates, progressively rivalled by Bizet’s. Palestrina is certainly much more discreet but no less significant, from Human, All Too human to The Case of Wagner. This article shows the role played by this Renaissance composer, whose work is marked by religiosity, on Nietzsche’s musical aesthetics. At first antithetical to opera culture, which Nietzsche criticizes in The Birth of Tragedy, he also embodies artistic perfection, especially of the medieval choral tradition. Finally, Palestrina represents for Nietzsche an alternative to the Schopenhauerian aesthetic and the triumphant Wagnerism of the 1880s.

Cet article propose d'étudier l'organisation de la frappe monétaire dans le Péloponnèse entre le règne d'Hadrien et celui de Septime Sévère. Sur la base de l'examen stylistique des monnaies produites à cette époque, l'auteur tente d'établir que, comme l'avait démontré K. Kraft pour l'Asie Mineure, plusieurs cités s'adressaient alors au même atelier pour réaliser leurs émissions monétaires ; des liaisons de coins de droit entre des monnayages différents sont d'ailleurs attestées. L'étude révèle également l'existence, à l'époque de Septime Sévère, de séries particulières, qualifiées ici de « coordonnées » : il s'agit d'émissions où l'on a manifestement tenté d'uniformiser les types monétaires de nombreux monnayages péloponnésiens.

We focus in this paper on the potential uses of Ludics, a logical framework based on recent developments in proof theory, for modeling natural language dialogues. The aim is to be able to grasp and to account for some aspects of incoherence in discourses. Among the properties relevant for studying dialogues, two features of Ludics are of interest for our purpose: the duality of viewpoints of two interlocutors as well as the possibility of ruptures. We illustrate first the potential usefulness of such a model for accounting and analyzing incoherence in dialogues due to cultural gap. We then focus on dialogues with schizophrenic individuals to try to answer the following questions: to what extent does incoherence play a role in schizophrenic discourse? And, would a more precise characterization of “non-standard” rationality help explain the range of potential complications of schizophrenia?

It has been shown that acting in a game-like task improves preschoolers’ working memory when tested in a reconstruction task. The game context and the motor activity during the game would provide goal cues bringing support to the memory processes. The aim of the present study was to test this hypothesis by examining preschoolers’ working memory performance in a game-like task compared to an exercise-like task, which offers less goal cues. In the present study, 5-year-olds had to maintain a series of fruits and vegetables while acting in a game-like task or remaining static during the same task presented in a school-exercise context. Memory performance was tested either through oral recall or reconstruction of the series of memory items. Despite the fact that memory performance did not differ between the two conditions whatever the type of memory tests, performance was worst in the game-like than in the exercise condition when the exercise was presented first. No difference emerged between conditions when the game condition was performed first. This result suggests that preschoolers were able to take advantage of acting in the game-like condition to integrate some task requirements, which were beneficial for performing the exercise condition.

A “ late” (6th or 13th c.) coin hoard discovered at Argos This study is devoted to a monetary hoard uncovered during emergency excavations in Argos in 1998 by the IVth Ephorate of Nafplion. The bulk of this hoard consists of Byzantine coins, along side which are found examples attributed to the Vandals as well as earlier coins, some dating to the Hellenistic period. The presence of a half-follis of Justin II indicates that the hoard was deposited ca 575-580, when Peloponnesus faced several successive Avaro-Slav movements. The possible presence of a 12-13th c. coin of Fauquembergues, which would significantly alter the date and the significance of this deposit, is also discussed.

On the dating of the term of Damasias in the office of eponymous archon in Athens and the first Sacred War in Delphi.Sources suggest two dates for the term of office of Damasias as eponymous archon: 582/1 and 580/79. This paper first aims to prove that both suggestions are correct. Indeed, the name Damasias must have been in the catalogues of archons for the three years during which he held the office, and not just the first. In the second part of the article, a new interpretation is proposed for the chronological subdivisions of the period that marks Solon’s departure and the assumption of the office by Damasias, as known from Chapter XIII of Athenaion Politeia (Constitution of the Athenians), so that these correspond to the two termini defined above. Such an approach obliges us to re‑examine the dating of Solon’s term of office as archon, which forms the point from which calculations are made, an issue that shall be approached through the involvement of the lawgiver in the first Sacred War.

On publie ici trois dédicaces d'archontes déliens à Hestia, dont deux ont été découvertes au Prytanée de Délos : la plus ancienne, inscrite sur un chapiteau votif, a été faite par Érasippos fils de Polyboulos, archonte en 302 av. J.-C. ; la deuxième, très mutilée, peut être approximativement datée du milieu du IIIe siècle avant notre ère ; la dernière est le fait de Télésarchidès, fils d'Eudikos, archonte en 181 av. J.-C. Les fouilles du Prytanée ont par ailleurs livré trois actes fragmentaires d'archontes déliens. Le plus intéressant et le plus complet est dû à Empédos fils d'Asbélos, archonte en 186 av. J.-C.
