Philosophical and social scientific debates about adolescence have increasingly emphasized its independent normative value in recent years and have moved away from deficit-oriented perspectives that comprehend adolescence primarily as a transitional phase to adulthood. Building on this development, the present article argues that the special goods of adolescence – including identity formation, developing autonomy, authenticity, meaningful social relationships, as well as moral and political exploration – can be understood as specific forms of resonance relationships as theoretically developed by Hartmut Rosa. Rosa’s concept of resonance describes successful world-relations characterized by affectability, responsiveness, transformation, and unavailability, distinguishing them from instrumental or alienated relationships. Adolescence represents a particularly resonance-saturated, yet also resonance-endangered life phase. A ‘good adolescence’ is essentially characterized by the experience and cultivation of resonant world-relations, whereby resonance functions both as an evaluation criterion and as a normative ideal.

Philosophical discussions on childhood increasingly emphasize its intrinsic value, moving away from traditional “deficit perspectives” that see childhood merely as a preparatory stage for adulthood. While similar views are often applied to adolescence, this paper argues that youth constitutes a distinct life phase with its own special goods. These include identity formation, the development of autonomy, authenticity, deeper social relationships, and moral and political exploration. Adolescence is characterized by rapid cognitive and emotional development, enabling an intense engagement with the self and the social world. By drawing on philosophical and interdisciplinary perspectives, this paper demonstrates that these special goods are not merely transitional features leading to adulthood but have intrinsic normative significance. Furthermore, it explores the challenges of providing social, familial, and institutional support to enable adolescents to realize these goods. Critical objections—such as the cultural specificity of adolescence or the blurred boundaries between life stages—are examined and contextualized. Ultimately, this paper advocates for a broader philosophical and societal recognition of adolescence as a valuable life phase with its own ethical and normative implications, underscoring the need to protect and foster its unique developmental and experiential dimensions.

This paper addresses the question of an ethics of fatherhood and develops the concept of feminist fatherhood in response. Such feminist fatherhood is grounded in a notion of feminist masculinity, which draws on feminist ethics and advocates for equality, gender equity, care, and the dismantling of injustice. Fatherhood becomes feminist, then, when fathers embody these ideals in their role as fathers. I propose that feminist fatherhood can be understood across three dimensions. First, feminist fatherhood involves a specific way of relating to one’s children—namely, an engaged, present, and empathetic approach to parenting that aims for equality and justice in child-rearing. Second, feminist fatherhood is reflected in the father’s relationship with the mother and partner. It is also about how caregiving responsibilities and domestic labor are shared. Third, there is a societal and political dimension to feminist fatherhood, which is expressed in fathers’ engagement for gender justice more broadly, and in their support for the structures, institutions, policies, and laws that make feminist fatherhood possible and sustainable.

This book discusses conditionality in social policy from normative, ethical, and philosophical perspectives. It brings together researchers from a variety of disciplines and parts of the world, opening new perspectives for the reader. Conditional social benefits are widespread and controversial: for supporters, they express that the state can expect something in return for its services and that self-responsibility is thereby strengthened. For critics, conditionality is synonymous with control and subjugation. This book discusses and investigates both views on conditionality, allowing the reader to get more in-depth knowledge of this topical and important aspect of social policy and political philosophy.

Liebe Leserinnen und Leser! Wir freuen uns, die zweite Ausgabe 2025 der Zeitschrift für Praktische Philosophie vorlegen zu können. Neben den Beiträgen in der offenen Sektion veröffentlichen wir in diesem Heft drei Schwerpunkte. Diese widmen sich der Klimakrise (herausgegeben von Daniel Lucas, Joseph Conrad und Stefan Knauß), der Philosophie der Migration (herausgegeben von Karoline Reinhardt und Gottfried Schweiger) und Thomas von Aquin (herausgegeben von Kathi Beier). Wir danken den Autor:innen und insbesondere den Gutachter:innen, die sich die Mühe machen, die eingereichten Texte gründlich zu lesen und zu kommentieren, und auf diese Weise sicherstellen, dass die ZfPP ihren hohen Qualitätsansprüchen gerecht wird. Ten years after the so-called “refugee crisis,” this introduction frames migration as a persistent and multifaceted philosophical challenge. It aims to offer a systematic overview of key debates and theoretical approaches in migration ethics, ranging from liberal and cosmopolitan theories to communitarian, critical-theoretical, feminist, postcolonial, and phenomenological perspectives. Rather than presenting these approaches in isolation, the article highlights their respective strengths, blind spots, and points of convergence. Particular attention is given to the heterogeneity of migration experiences, intersecting forms of vulnerability, questions of epistemic justice, and emerging challenges posed by digital border technologies, new regimes of migration control, and the ethical implications of climate-induced migration.

The contemporary philosophical–ethical debate about explainability of algorithmic systems shows a remarkable research gap: youth-specific perspectives receive only marginal attention, despite adolescents and youth being among the most intensive users of digital technologies. This paper argues that this neglect, in particular of the specific vulnerabilities and needs of young people, is particularly problematic given that algorithmic systems increasingly shape identity development, socialization, and agency of adolescents. Through analyzing youth as a distinct life phase in digital contexts, this paper demonstrates how development-conditioned characteristics create specific vulnerabilities toward AI systems. The heterogeneity of young people—considering intersectional dimensions, such as gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and disability—reveals differentiated ethical requirements for explainability. This paper conceptualizes explainability not merely as a technical challenge but as a fundamental condition for enabling autonomy development, as a protective factor against algorithmic manipulation, and as a foundation for digital maturity. This paper argues that intransparent algorithmic systems undermine both current autonomy and future capacity development. Explainability should be understood as a tool for empowerment that enables critical thinking, practical agency, and action. The educational dimension reveals AI literacy as an indispensable cultural technique requiring systematic curricular integration and new pedagogical approaches. Furthermore, this paper explores the responsibilities of technology firms and the state to protect adolescents and to empower them to use AI safely and wisely.

This volume contributes to the ongoing interdisciplinary controversies about the moral, legal and political status of children and childhood. It comprises essays by scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds on diverse theoretical problems and public policy controversies that bear upon different facets of the life of children in contemporary liberal democracies. The book is divided into three major parts that are each organized around a common general theme. The first part (“Children and Childhood: Autonomy, Well-Being and Paternalism”) focusses on key concepts of an ethics of childhood. Part two (“Justice for Children”) contains chapters that are concerned with the topics of justice for children and justice during childhood. The third part (“The Politics of Childhood”) deals with issues that concern the importance of `childhood´ as a historically contingent political category and its relevance for the justification and practical design of political processes and institutions that affect children and families.

Das Kapitel konzentriert sich auf Essen und Ernährung. Graf und Schweiger beschreiben die verfügbaren Beweise zur kindlichen Adipositas und diskutieren deren negative Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit, Handlungsfähigkeit und Selbstbeziehungen der betroffenen Kinder. Anschließend wenden sie sich der Familie und dem Staat als Hauptakteur:innen der Gerechtigkeit zu. Im Mittelpunkt des zweiten Teils des Abschnitts stehen Essstörungen mit einem Fokus auf Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa und Binge-Eating-Störung, die viele schädliche Auswirkungen auf die körperliche Integrität von Kindern in all ihren Dimensionen haben. Sie diskutieren die soziale Einbettung dieser Zustände und gehen auf einen Akteur der Gerechtigkeit näher ein: die Medien.

In diesem Kapitel präsentieren Graf und Schweiger ihr normatives Rahmenwerk, eine (partielle) Theorie der GerechtigkeitGerechtigkeit für Kinder auf der Grundlage des Fähigkeitenansatzes. Sie befassen sich mit Fragen der Besonderheit von Kindern, die sie von Erwachsenen unterscheidet, und untersuchen die Kindheit als eine Entwicklungsphase, insbesondere der Autonomie, und der erhöhten Verletzlichkeit. Dann argumentieren sie für bestimmte Modifikationen des Fähigkeitenansatzes, um besser für Kinder zu passen, und konzentrieren sich auf das Konzept der sich entwickelnden Fähigkeiten für diese Aufgabe. Da die körperliche Integrität im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches steht, untersuchen sie dieses Konzept weiter als eine Reihe von Fähigkeiten, die Gesundheit, Handlungsfähigkeit und Selbstbeziehungen umfassen. Schließlich erkunden sie das Konzept der Gerechtigkeitsakteur:innen für Kinder und wie Verantwortlichkeiten auf sie auf verschiedenen Grundlagen übertragen werden können.

Im letzten Kapitel ziehen Graf und Schweiger sieben Schlussfolgerungen basierend auf ihrer Forschung und ihren Erkenntnissen. Sie argumentieren, dass Gerechtigkeitjustice-basierte und gerechtigkeitsorientierte Politikgestaltung auf mehrere Schwierigkeiten stößt, aufgrund von Uneinigkeit über ethische Argumente sowie Unsicherheiten in den empirischen Erkenntnissen. Die verschiedenen Dimensionen der Fähigkeit von Kindern zur körperlichen Integrität und die unterschiedlichen und sich verändernden Bedrohungen, denen Kinder ausgesetzt sind, erfordern einen vielschichtigen und multilateralen Ansatz zu ihrem Schutz, der sowohl die Eltern als auch den Staat umfassen muss. Schließlich ist es notwendig anzuerkennen, dass die körperliche Integrität von Kindern nur eine Dimension ist, die für ihr Wohlergehen und ihre Wohlentwicklung wichtig ist. Der Schutz der körperlichen Integrität ist somit ein Teil des Puzzles.

In diesem Kapitel wenden sich Graf und Schweiger dem Thema Gewalt zu und konzentrieren sich auf körperlichen Missbrauch, der hauptsächlich innerhalb der Familie vorkommt, und Gewalt zwischen Gleichaltrigen, mit einem besonderen Fokus auf Mobbing in der Schule. Sie argumentieren, dass beides problematisch ist, oft nicht primär wegen der körperlichen Verletzungen, sondern wegen der Auswirkungen auf die Handlungsfähigkeit und Selbstbeziehungen der Kinder. Missbrauch und andere Formen von Gewalt haben negative Auswirkungen auf das Selbstvertrauen und Selbstwertgefühl der Kinder und setzen einen Kreislauf von Angst und Furcht in Gang, der zu internalisierenden und externalisierenden Verhaltensweisen führen kann.

Das Kapitel befasst sich mit der Sexualität von Kindern als Teil ihrer körperlichen Integrität. Da die Sexualität von Kindern ein hoch umstrittenes und tabuisiertes Thema ist, analysieren Graf und Schweiger zunächst wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse über die Sexualität von Kindern und deren Entwicklung. Anschließend konzentrieren sie sich auf zwei verschiedene Bedrohungen der körperlichen Integrität von Kindern in Bezug auf deren Sexualität: die Sexualisierung der Kindheit und sexuellen Missbrauch. Während die erste auf gesellschaftlicher und kultureller Ebene angesiedelt ist und sich mit Themen wie dem negativen Einfluss der Medien, der allgegenwärtigen Verfügbarkeit von Pornografie oder der Werbung für unrealistische Körperideale befasst, ist das zweite Thema des sexuellen Missbrauchs auf der zwischenmenschlichen Ebene angesiedelt, obwohl soziale Faktoren auch für dessen Verständnis und ethische Kritik wichtig sind.

In der Einleitung werden wir zwei Fragen beantworten, bevor wir einen kurzen Überblick über die Struktur dieses Buches geben. Die Fragen sind: Was sind unsere Ziele und was wollen wir erreichen? Wie gehen wir vor, um diese zu erreichen? Bezüglich der ersten Frage werden wir erklären, dass unser Buch auf Ethik fokussiert ist und somit unser Hauptziel ein ethisches ist: Wir wollen klären, was moralisch falsch an der Verletzung der körperlichen Integrität von Kindern ist, wie sie heute in wohlhabenden Gesellschaften geschieht. Bezüglich der zweiten Frage werden wir klarstellen, dass wir zunächst das Problem identifizieren müssen, wie es sich durch wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse, politische oder öffentliche Debatten oder die Artikulation der Betroffene darstellt. Dann müssen die damit verbundenen ethischen Fragen identifiziert und geklärt werden. Welche Art von ethisch relevantem Schaden wird Kindern zugefügt und wie bedroht er ihr Wohlergehen/Wohlentwickeln und ihre körperliche Integrität? Um dies zu tun, ist es notwendig, genügend Raum für die Spezifikation der relevanten Fähigkeiten zu schaffen, um eine solide Benchmark bereitzustellen. In diesem Sinne ist unser Ansatz problemorientiert und offen dafür, den normativen Rahmen bei Bedarf anzupassen. Schließlich erfordert die dritte Aufgabe, dass die verantwortlichen Akteure identifiziert werden sowie die moralischen Verpflichtungen, die ihnen aufgrund der Kriterien ihrer Beteiligung am Problem, ihrer Rolle bei dessen Verursachung und ihres Potenzials zur Verwirklichung von Gerechtigkeit für die bedrohten Kinder zugeschrieben werden sollten.

Dieses Buch befasst sich mit der Gefährdung des Körpers von Kindern in Wohlstandsgesellschaften. Die körperliche Unversehrtheit ist ein wichtiger Teil des körperlichen und seelischen Wohlbefindens eines Kindes, aber sie kann auch durch verschiedene Bedrohungen in der Kindheit verletzt werden; dies beeinträchtigt nicht nur die körperliche Gesundheit, sondern verursacht auch seelische Schäden und führt zu Verzerrungen in der Entwicklung des Selbst. Die Autoren gehen auf drei Bereiche ein, die unterschiedlich schwerwiegende Gefährdungen darstellen: (1) Körper und Essen, (2) Körper und Sexualität, und (3) Körper und Gewalt. Durch eine eingehende Auseinandersetzung mit dem vorhandenen theoretischen und empirischen Wissen sowie eine gründliche ethische Analyse werden die zentralen Ungerechtigkeiten in den genannten Bereichen identifiziert und die Akteure mit Verantwortung gegenüber Kindern aufgezeigt. Abschließend geben die Autoren einen wertvollen Einblick in die Notwendigkeit einer ethischen Grundlage für Maßnahmen zum Schutz von Kindern und ihren Körpern.

This article examines how the concept of explainability must be fundamentally reconceptualised when applied to digital phenotyping in adolescent mental health contexts. After a short overview of digital phenotyping, the ethical challenges connected to it are sketched, which mostly come from the use of AI and include the well-known problems of bias, distortion, black box models and missing transparency. These aspects must be considered even more carefully when it comes to adolescents. After that, it is proposed that explainability should be the central ethical demand that must be fulfilled before such technologies are allowed to be used, and the connection between explainability and other important normative concepts like trust and informed consent is explained. While existing debates about AI transparency in healthcare often assume universal standards of explainability, this analysis demonstrates that the developmental, relational, and epistemic particularities of adolescence demand a qualitatively different understanding of what it means for algorithmic systems to be ‘explainable’. The paper argues that explainability in this context cannot be reduced to technical transparency or procedural information disclosure, but must be reimagined as a multidimensional, developmentally sensitive concept that encompasses relational dynamics, identity formation processes, and the cultivation of epistemic autonomy. This reconceptualisation reveals that traditional approaches to explainable AI – developed primarily for adult populations and clinical professionals – fail to address the specific ways in which adolescents engage with, understand, and are shaped by algorithmic categorisations of their mental states.

The purpose of this book—to answer the question: What is a good childhood?—will to some seem overly ambitious and even attract skepticism. The aim of this chapter is to address some of the possible reasons for such skepticism and, if possible, to refute them. In doing so, we refer to several central debates in the philosophy of childhood and set out some of the fundamental normative and methodological starting points for our argument. Among the most important reasons why one might be skeptical of our book’s mission are problems arising from the historical contingency, changeability, and normative relativity of childhood, addressed in Sect. 2.1; its status as a social construction; and the normative character and status of childhood as a concept and a human phenomenon. We address each of these points in Sects. 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3, respectively. In working through these problems, we develop an ethical account of childhood that is sensitive to the unique tasks, possibilities, and limits of childhood. The account clarifies how to grapple with pluralism regarding how to shape a good childhood, what positions it takes up in public debates about children and childhood in a liberal democracy, and what justificatory premises we should proceed from to construct a normative theory of childhood (Sect. 2.4).

All children deserve a good childhood. Few would disagree with a claim of this nature. But what exactly makes for a good childhood? How do we know if we have experienced one? These questions are easily posed, but not so easily answered. They evoke a multitude of different and often conflicting associations. Everyone has had their own childhood, which they experienced as good or bad, or at least as better or worse in certain respects. When dealing with one’s own childhood and with that of others, several different patterns of interpretation are invoked, some biographical, some sociocultural, and some historical. In these patterns of interpretation, very different ideas of a good (or not as good) childhood often come to bear. While some nostalgically indulge in memories of their own childhood as a kind of lost paradise, others see their childhood as a nightmare from which they are glad to have woken.

In this book, we have put forward a view of the goods involved in a good childhood and discussed how the family and state might share responsibility in enacting these goods. In principle, the concept of a good childhood presented here provides a general framework that makes it possible to discuss questions of a good childhood in an ethically grounded and democratically legitimate way. Our view is, of course, still in need of further specification and interpretation, and it must be supplemented by additional empirical research. It is therefore also open to criticism and suggestions for improvement. Ultimately, readers must decide for themselves whether they believe it is plausible to interpret the life and moral status of children in this way.

Der Zusammenhang zwischen liberaler Demokratie als Staats- und Lebensform, politischer und ökologischer Bildung und einer angemessenen Einrichtung und Neuausrichtung menschlicher Naturverhältnisse im Lichte des Klimawandels ist nicht zuletzt auf Grund der Bewegung „Fridays for Future“ ein Thema, das in der aktuellen öffentlichen Selbstverständigung dauerpräsent ist. Zugleich ist dieser Konnex mit Grundsatzfragen verbunden, die das Selbstverständnis liberaler Demokratien und ihrer Erziehungs- und Bildungssysteme in ihrem normativen Kern betreffen. In dem Band werden unterschiedliche miteinander verschränkte Problemdimensionen des Zusammenhangs zwischen Bildung, Demokratie und Klimawandel theoretisch und empirisch rekonstruiert, analysiert und diskutiert.

The following reconstruction and definition of a good childhood is concerned with clarifying what constitutes a sufficiently good, not an ideal childhood. The core elements of a good childhood that we name below define minimum and necessary requirements for assessing a childhood as better or worse. We are not interested in constructing ideal worlds or utopian ideal states, but in identifying realistic possibilities for improvement, for understanding what belongs to a childhood that is good enough. The core elements of a good childhood can be pieced together in different ways and various priorities can be set. However, if not all requirements are met to a minimum extent, one cannot speak of a sufficiently good childhood. We thus take a sufficiency-oriented, threshold-based position, which assumes that a good childhood is characterized by the sufficient realization of objectively valuable childhood goods that are suitable for the absolute and comparative assessment of children’s well-being. With the help of these goods, we show that children’s rights, their claims to justice, and the associated duties of adults toward children can be established (such as a right to basic education). However, we should recognize that the childhood goods we name are not all distributed in the same way, nor can they all be easily codified in law (such as love, even if there have been attempts to establish a “right to be loved” (Liao, 2015); cf. Chaps. 4 and 5).

Realizing a good childhood for all children is not the sole responsibility of parents; it is dependent upon a social infrastructure that should provide the institutional conditions to enact the goods of childhood to a sufficient extent. In line with the sufficiency-oriented position we advocate, social justice for children is a requirement that liberal states must guarantee. We are therefore not concerned with equal opportunities for children to have a good childhood, or that all childhoods should be equally good, but that they are good enough. Special attention is reserved for children whose situation—relative to the aforementioned minimum standard—is not only not good enough, but proves to be particularly bad. The complex relationship between the liberal state, parents, and children, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘Bermuda triangle’ of political theory, is the subject of ongoing controversy. One finds repeated debates about how the responsibilities, rights, and duties of all parties in the triangle should be balanced (such as debates about compulsory schooling or debates about the curricular canon). In the following, we argue that this relationship can be envisioned in the form of shared responsibility, whereby we are by no means committing ourselves to a model of harmony by means of a division of labor. On the contrary, any regulation of the relationship between parents, children, and the state is associated with moral and, of course, financial costs. If one holds on to the institution of the family—which we believe one should do from a liberal perspective in the absence of viable alternatives—then compromises must be made in the realization of social justice.

Now that we have outlined what goods make up a good childhood, let us turn to the question of who is responsible for ensuring that children have a good childhood. We will begin by clarifying what responsibilities parents have in providing a good childhood and bracket for now how the state enters in to these responsibilities. The family is a social institution that is embedded in state institutions and regulations (such as legal requirements). The ability of (many) parents to contribute to the realization of a good childhood is therefore limited by external sociopolitical and socioeconomic factors, in particular by material hardship and the precarious conditions in which they live. However, it does not follow from this interweaving of state, society, and family that the corresponding domains of responsibility cannot be separated from each other analytically or that parents could or should be relieved of responsibilities for a good childhood. Parental support is, in fact, necessary for the enactment of the goods of childhood.

This book explores the relationship between different versions of liberalism and toleration by focusing on their shared theoretical and political challenges. Toleration is among the most pivotal and the most contested liberal values and virtues. Debates about the conceptual scope, justification, and political role of toleration are closely aligned with historical and contemporary philosophical controversies on the foundations of liberalism. The essays in this volume focus on the specific connection between toleration and liberalism. The essays in Part I reconstruct some of the major historical controversies surrounding toleration and liberalism. Part II centers on general conceptual and justificatory questions concerning toleration as a central category for the definition of liberal political theory. Part III is devoted to the theoretical analysis of applied issues and cases of conflicts of toleration in liberal states and societies. Toleration and the Challenges to Liberalism will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in social and political philosophy, ethics, and political theory.

This book deals with the question of what is a good life for children. It argues that a good childhood is one in which: a child is sufficiently provided with all the goods it needs to develop into an autonomous person a child is sufficiently provided with the goods it needs for its well-being sufficient space is given to a child ́s will, wishes, concerns and projects The book not only develops a new theoretical conception of a good childhood and defends it against objections, it also engages with the problem how a good childhood can be realized in the context of families as well as the institutions of liberal states. In so doing it provides numerous insights into central themes and key issues of the philosophy of childhood. What is a Good Childhood? is essential reading for all scholars and researchers of ethics, social and political philosophy and philosophy education, especially those focusing on the philosophy of childhood. Johannes Drerup is a professor for philosophy of education and educational theory at TU Dortmund University as well as a guest professor at VU Amsterdam. Gottfried Schweiger is a senior scientist at the Centre for Ethics and Poverty Research at the University of Salzburg.

Verletzlichkeit ist ein Schlüsselbegriff in der Ethik der Kindheit. Viele Autor:innen betrachten ihn als ein wichtiges Merkmal, das für das Verständnis des besonderen moralischen Status von Kindern notwendig ist, um zu klären, worin ihr Wohlergehen besteht, und um spezifische Gefährdungen von Kindern zu identifizieren und zu beseitigen. Während wir der Bedeutung, die dem Konzept der Verletzlichkeit zugeschrieben wird, voll und ganz zustimmen, sind wir der Meinung, dass einige Merkmale, die die besondere Verletzlichkeit von Kindern betreffen, bisher nicht ausreichend berücksichtigt wurden – insbesondere fehlt es bisher an einer systematischen Differenzierung der verschiedenen Quellen der Verletzlichkeit von Kindern, ebenso wie an einer Anerkennung der Bedeutung der kindlichen Entwicklung.

Eine Ethik, die für die besondere Situation von Mädchen sensibel ist, ist ein viel zu wenig untersuchter Bereich in der feministischen Forschung und einer, der sowohl einen theoretischen Rahmen als auch praktische Anwendbarkeit erfordert. Wir glauben, dass es wichtig ist, sich der körperlichen Integrität von Mädchen aus Perspektive einer ethischen Theorie zu nähern, daher greifen wir auf den Fähigkeitenansatz zurück, den der Ökonom Amartya Sen wesentlich entwickelt hat, und versuchen auf seiner Basis eine Bestimmung der Konzepte der körperlichen Integrität, des Wohlergehens und Wohlentwickelns von Mädchen. Der Fähigkeitsansatz kann als eine nicht-ideale normative Theorie der Gerechtigkeit und Freiheit interpretiert werden und daher als ein Rahmen, in dem ethische und politische Herausforderungen, die Mädchen betreffen, analysiert werden können, da er bottom-up auf reale Probleme eingeht und sich darauf konzentriert, wie „der soziale Kontext die Bedingungen für individuelle Freiheiten setzt“.
