Beyond Diaeresis: Diatetamenon Genos in Sophist 253d–e and the Conditions of Κοινωνία

Neither the classical collection-division model nor recent exegeses on the four clauses of Sophist 253d–e has explained from within the text their connection to the greatest kinds and to κοινωνία. I argue clauses [i] - [ii] specify a structural type of genos —— Diatetamenon genos (from διατεταμένην, 253d6) —— that pervades all Forms while remaining external to each, distinct from the diaeretic type of [iii] - [iv]. Two criteria identify such kinds: the Universality Criterion (πάντῃ, 253d7) and the Mutual Pervasion Criterion. Of the five greatest kinds, only Being, Same, and Other satisfy both —— specifying the structural conditions under which κοινωνία among Forms is possible.
