This note's communication explores the symbolism and reimagining of the California state animal, the extinct California grizzly bear (Ursus arctos californicus). The modern California flag's bear is modeled after a real grizzly named Monarch, who lived in captivity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The core image, "Repub Grizzly Monarch I," depicts an armored, futuristic Monarch against the backdrop of the Transverse Ranges. This illustration blends nature with technology, serving as a potent symbol of California's enduring, untamed spirit.

This review examines the seminal work "The King's Highway: El Camino Real" by John Steven McGroarty, who served as the California Poet Laureate from 1933 to 1944 and as a Democratic Congressman from California from 1935 to 1939. The poem serves as a lyrical map of the historic mission trail, blending themes of spiritual pilgrimage with the rugged natural beauty of the California coast. The King's Highway is a 600-mile (965-kilometer) commemorative route connecting the 21 Spanish missions in California region from Mission San Diego de Alcalá in San Diego at the South end to Mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma at the North end, along with a number of sub-missions, four presidios, and three pueblos. East entrance of San Gabriel Mission with an El Camino Real bell, marks just one point along this historic trail that leads directly to Mission San Juan Capistrano—known as the "Jewel of the Missions.” The route is historically associated with a network of royal roads (caminos reales) used by Spaniards to connect the territories of Imperial New Spain in America, serving as a vital infrastructure for the Spanish Imperial administration within the Spanish Empire. Consequently, Christianity spread for centuries—long times in the United States under the Monarchy of the Catholic Church of the Holy See (Vatican) called Catholic Kings & Queens of the Kingdom of Spain, with full support from the catholic papal government Holy See (Vatican) and in cooperation with the Holy Roman Empire. This article analyzes McGroarty’s use of religious imagery—specifically the "brown-robed padres" and "sinner-folk"—to sanctify the physical landscape, citizens of the expanded Spanish Empire, since they were descendants of the early fathers of christianity and crusading armies called knights of the cross, consequently rectification of the missions through establishing the Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Spain. Furthermore, it touches upon the poem's cross-cultural transcreation, as seen in international adaptations that translate its Western "chaparral" into Eastern "kunjabon," proving the universal potentiality of Golden Highway in a globalized literary context.

This review critically examines "Sierran Pan," a seminal nature poem by Dr. Henry Meade Bland (1863–1931), the first official Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry for California. The poem functions as a lyrical manifesto that conflates the classical Greek deity of the wild, Pan, with the physical and spiritual landscape of the Sierra Nevada. Pan is the God of nature, the wild, shepherds, flocks, mountain wilds, rustic music and impromptus, and companion of the Nymphs. The analysis will focus on the poem's structure, thematic synthesis of classicism and regionalism, and its use of the "I" persona to claim imaginative ownership over the California wilderness. It is argued that "Sierran Pan" succeeds as both a pastoral invocation and a definitive statement of Bland's contribution to Western American poetic identity.

Today is 9/11. On this day, September 11, 2001, the Islamic State’s allied force, Al-Qaeda Militant Command, carried out coordinated air attacks on several important places in the United States. They were fully successful in their attacks on the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers in New York City. The 9/11 plane attacks became one of the most significant battles in the modern history of warfare. This attack was a deeply tragic event in the history of the United States of America. On the other hand, however, the 9/11 air attack is regarded in some perspectives as a glorious event in Islamic history, comparable to the celebrated battles of the Muslim-Christian crusades in the past, which are remembered as part of the golden era of Islamic religious mission. When President George W. Bush received information about the attack, he immediately addressed the situation. In the midst of America’s shaken state, President Bush declared that those who are not with us are with the terrorists. The 9/11 attacks were a one way short but deadly battle that caused mass casualties, widespread destruction, and global consequences. The Islamic forces had a foolproof plan, believing they would succeed and initiate an Islamic mission in America—envisioning a nation in ruins, overcome by darkness, ignorance, and barbarism. In response, the United States declared a global military campaign, known as the Global War on Terrorism, and launched several armed missions. After many years of war, terrorism was ultimately weakened, and the forces of injustice lost their war game. In the aftermath of 9/11, America’s response was not limited to armed campaigns alone. The true lesson of 9/11 is that American society does not succumb to the injustice of crime and terrorism. The state of humanity cannot be compromised by injustice, crimes, or acts of terror.

The poetry "A Hope" was written by American poet Ina Donna Coolbrith. Ina Coolbrith was the first Poet Laureate of California and the first poet laureate of any American state. The poem reflects on the passage of time and the lingering power of memory. The poetic speaker(s) recalls a transformative moment in their youth, described as the May-time of my life — "my life was in its May,” when nature and love seemed to sparkle all around in the May, “month of the year.” The pose contrasts this vibrant past with the present, acknowledging that the sweet spring of youth is gone. Despite this loss, the speaker finds solace in a continued connection to that earlier time, symbolized by the enduring song of nightingales. The verse concludes with a hopeful note, expressing a desire to hear this same beautiful song in the afterlife. The work explores themes of nostalgia, the bittersweet nature of memory, and the idea that certain powerful experiences can resurrect the boundaries of time, offering comfort and a sense of continuity. I.D. Coolbrith served as a California Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry on behalf of the State of California Arts Council from 1915 to until her death in 1928. This state scholarly position, also known as the governor’s advocate for the art of poetry, is officially designated as California Poet Laureate. The position’s protocol is run by the California Arts Council and is subject to appointment by the Governor of California and confirmation by the State Senate. Poet Ina Coolbrith was the President of the Pacific Coast Woman's Press Association and a member of the California Writers Club. She facilitated the California Literature Society’s monthly meetings at her home on Russian Hill. In 1915, Coolbrith was named President of the Congress of Authors and Journalists at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition.
