Hayate Shimizu

I am a Specially Appointed Assistant Professor at the Center for Human Nature, Artificial Intelligence, and Neuroscience (CHAIN), Hokkaido University. My research lies at the intersection of Kantian ethics and AI and robot ethics. In Kantian ethics, I work on virtue, rational feelings, duties of love and respect, and Kantian eudaimonism. My research in AI and robot ethics examines how ethical relations with artificial agents are formed, mediated, and governed, with particular attention to relational approaches. I also draw on Japanese philosophy, especially Watsuji Tetsurō’s concepts of aidagara and fūdo, to develop new ways of understanding human–AI and human–robot relations. More broadly, I am interested in how philosophical traditions can help us address contemporary ethical questions concerning humans, animals, and artificial entities.
