Proto-reciprocity is not first an ethic, courtesy, virtue, sentiment, or social contract. It is a structural requirement of action in any field that already contains other actors. To act in such a field is to require contact with what is not-self. Contact requires answer-back: resistance, correction, refusal, confirmation, obstruction, invitation, or consequence. Where the field contains another actor, that actor stands as one irreducible source of such answer-back. To abolish that answering source is not mastery of the field. It is loss of bearing within it. Proto-reciprocity names this first preservation: another retained as answering operator.

Agency is prima facie: it is the first fact of practice, standing before method, map, and decree. Someone must choose to speak, to expose a proposal to the world, and to let the outcome count. Four necessities follow. First, giving a reason presumes a reason giver. Second, maps become knowledge only when moved into contact that can push back. Third, choice becomes real where consequences can teach and bind. Fourth, novelty and correction require relation—self with world, self with another—and a standard neither party controls. A brief prelude precedes all of this: the pause that faces what is without forcing it. From that stance, inquiry can begin and remain honest. Where that stance is missing, methods decorate performance rather than discover.
