Integration is now very successful in the field of life sciences: neuroscience, physiology, and a whole part of biology claim to be “integrative.” The term appears in the titles of scientific journals: Integrative Biology, Integrative and Comparative Biology, OMICS: A Journal of Integrative Biology, etc. However, this situation results from a complex genealogy. Initially mathematical like the notion of function, the concept penetrated into the field of life sciences in the second half of the nineteenth century. Its history meets simultaneously Herbert Spencer’s evolutionism and Claude Bernard’s physiology. It will take a more specific meaning in John Hughlings Jackson’s, David Ferrier’s, and especially Charles Scott Sherrington’s neurologies. The following contesting of the Sherringtonian paradigm will not prevent the development of the notion in general physiology at John Barcroft’s instigation. We suggest here investigating the successive rectifications of the concept of integration, which every time express a different vision of the body and successively a strategy to be adopted to elucidate its physiology.

La méthode psychoprophylactique d’accouchement sans douleur se développe en URSS dans un contexte stalinien sur les principes de la médecine pavlovienne, définie officiellement lors de la « session pavlovienne » de 1950. En France, c’est la figure de Fernand Lamaze qui est associée à la promotion de l’accouchement sans douleur, après qu’il ait importé la MPP d’Union soviétique l’année suivante. D’abord soutenue par les organisations marxistes et le mouvement d’émancipation des femmes, elle sera ensuite contestée sous l’effet des transformations dans la gestion médicale de l’accouchement et des rivalités politiques de la guerre froide. L’article interroge les origines historiques, épistémologiques et politiques de la médecine pavlovienne. Il compare la réception du pavlovisme à l’Ouest et à l’Est en suivant le fil de l’histoire de l’accouchement sans douleur et les enjeux en France et en URSS d’une controverse dans laquelle médecine et politique s’entremêlent.

At the end of the nineteenth century, approaches from experimental physiology made inroads into embryological research. A new generation of embryologists felt urged to study the mechanisms of organ formation. This new program, most prominently defended by Wilhelm Roux, was called Entwicklungsmechanik. Named variously as “causal embryology”, “physiological embryology” or “developmental mechanics”, it catalyzed the movement of embryology from a descriptive science to one exploring causal mechanisms. This article examines the specific scientific and epistemological meaning of the mechanistic approaches of embryological development by focusing on Wilhelm His’ histogenetic work. Roux was neither the first, nor the only one to argue for an experimental exploration of causes in embryology. At the time of Roux, physiological explanations of the genesis of the anatomical forms were developing in parallel, not only in German-speaking countries, but in France, Switzerland and English-speaking countries as well. The experimental approach and the cellular descriptions of embryogenesis were already omni-present when Roux proposed his Entwicklungsmechanik. However, these approaches remained disjointed. It appears that it was Wilhelm His who first succeeded in combining the question of the causal factors determining epigenesis, which was closely connected with experimentation on, and cellular descriptions of, development, in a coherent and concrete synthesis, making him one of the true initiators of the developmental mechanics.

Si l’héritage scientifique de William James est revendiqué aujourd’hui à la fois par certains tenants du béhaviorisme, du cognitivisme et des neurosciences, c’est que les Principles of Psychology (1890) eurent une portée très supérieure à l’influence directe exercée sur les propres élèves de James, ou au legs au fonctionnalisme américain. La dimension programmatique de l’œuvre peut être approchée par le traitement multiple qu’elle applique au problème de la mémoire. Les écrits sur la mémoire de James, sans doute moins connus que ses écrits sur les émotions ou la conscience, se révèlent ainsi pertinents pour comprendre son ancrage historique et sa postérité comme psychologue.

Le XXe siècle se caractérise par un afflux de données concernant le fonctionnement cérébral, du niveau moléculaire à la cognition. Mais le rapport du fonctionnement et de la fonction pose de sérieuses difficultés d'ordre méthodologique et philosophique. The 20 century is characterized by a multifold surge of data about the cerebral functioning from the molecular level to cognition. But the relationship between functioning and function raises quite a few serious difficulties on both the methodological and philosophical level.
