240Honesty and Intimacy in Kant’s Duty of FriendshipInternational Philosophical Quarterly 47 (4): 417-424. 2007.The relationship between intimacy and honesty seems a paradoxical one. While intimate relationships would seem to demand a high level of honesty, this same intimacy might make us more likely to shield the other or protect ourselves through benevolent lying or the withholding of information. It would seem that honesty may not always be the best policy in intimate relationships. The purpose of this article is to examine the tension between honesty and intimacy in Kant’s duty of friendship, and it …Read more

42Ethical Issues in Pediatric Vascularized Composite AllotransplantationIn David Rodríguez-Arias, Aviva Goldberg & Rebecca Greenberg (eds.), Ethical Issues in Pediatric Organ Transplantation, Springer Verlag. pp. 169-191. 2016.Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation (VCA) enables improved function and quality of life for those who have lost anatomical parts such as a limb and the relief of profound suffering for those with severe facial disfiguration. VCA differs from vital organ transplantation in two important ways: (1) these transplants are not necessary for recipient survival, impacting risk-benefit ratios; and (2) face and limb transplants are visible and touchable, leading to issues of identity changes, socia…Read more

116Uterine Transplantation: Ethics in Light of Recent SuccessesInternational Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 12 (1): 1-23. 2019.We argue that strong moral objections to widespread implementation of uterine transplantation persist despite recent live births following the procedure. These objections relate not only to the serious medical risk to which live donors are currently subject but also to the strength of pronatalistic and biologistic social forces. We explore medical risk in light of various factors and treat questions relating uterine transplantation to gestational surrogacy.

251Triage in Times of Drug ShortageHealthcare Management Forum 28 (5): 202-205. 2015.This paper addresses the current drug shortage, and examines the ethics framework for dealing with drug shortages developed by our organization. That three-step allocation process and framework was published previously in this journal. Specifically, this paper offers a rationale and justification for the framework’s second step, which involves a triage process aimed to ensure that the available drug supply is utilized effectively and ethically.

37Clinical Ethics Consultation: Moralism and Moral ExpertiseIn Jamie Carlin Watson & Laura K. Guidry-Grimes (eds.), Moral Expertise: New Essays from Theoretical and Clinical Bioethics, Springer Verlag. pp. 259-274. 2018.What kind of criticism does the term ‘moralism’ make? In this paper, I examine whether clinical ethics consultation is even moralistic, and the relevance to this question of the moral expertise of the clinical ethicist. More specifically, I pose two questions: why might clinical ethics consultation sometimes be perceived as moralistic, and does clinical ethics consultation ever require a certain kind of moralism? I begin by looking at the term moralism, providing an exposition of some relevant p…Read more
