  • Introduction: Cotard syndrome is a neuropsychiatric entity recognised by the presence of nihilistic delusions. Although different models have been proposed for the development of monothematic delusions, including Cotard syndrome, functional neuroanatomical models are lacking. Methods: A case report of a 19-year old male with autoimmune encephalitis and Cotard syndrome, in whom Positron Emission Tomography (18F-FDG-PET) scans were performed before and after successful treatment with electroconvul…Read more

    Cognitive Neuropsychiatry 29 (3): 186-193. 2024.

with Ximena González-Grandón and Rosa Aurora Chávez
    Philosophical Psychology 38 (1): 353-377. 2025.

Both cases showed features of affective psychosis, developed catatonic syndrome, and worsened after the use of antipsychotics. 18F-FDG PET brain studies showed a bilateral hemispheric pattern of hypometabolism in posterior regions, mainly in the cingulate cortex and in the medial aspects of parietal and occip…Read more

Neuropsychiatric Constructs as Bridges Between Psychopathology and Neuropathology: A Medical Perspective
with Fernanda Pérez-Gay Juarez and Atocha Aliseda
    Review of Philosophy and Psychology 16 (3): 909-931. 2025.
This essay provides an analysis of the clinical problems that arise at the borderline between neurology and psychiatry. We postulate that psychopathological and neuropathological constructs have distinct referents and conceptual fields, but they are not mutually exclusive categories. After establishing criteria for defining neuropsychiatric constructs, we outline rules for identifying cases where a significant relationship exists between neuropathological and psychopathological patterns. We prop…Read more
