John Carney grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the U.S. Navy and attended Brooklyn College. While working in social services in New York City, he attended the New School for Social Research. At the New School, John was fortunate to study with David Gordon, Reiner Schurman, and other astounding thinkers. He received his M.A. in Philosophy and subsequently his Ph.D. in 2004. John's dissertation was on Jean-Paul Sartre's philosophy. His subsequent teaching and scholarship is in the area of political and social philosophy.
