I am working on a large project on the human good. This work stems partly from my experience as an economist working mainly on policy in African countries. It also reflects a lifelong involvement with poetry.
My account of the human good draws on a survey of accounts of the human good in Greek and modern western philosophy and literature (including Anglo-Saxon and continental approaches) as well as Buddhist and Jewish traditions. It aims to illuminate the question whether economic and social development is making life better, within a framework precommitted neither to progressivism nor to critique. The thinker who has been most help in this endeavour is Aristotle, but my use of Aristotle differs from most of the familiar ones.
