Connecting Lombardi’s quantum property ontology to Dalla Chiara and Toraldo di Francia’s intensional quantum metaphysics
    with Décio Krause
We present a brief sketch of both ontological views about quantum objects: those of O. Lombardi and that of M.L.Dalla Chiara and G. Toraldo di Francia. We articulate a parallel in these lines, which view quantum objects either as bundles of properties or as nomological objects defined by physical law. The aim of the paper is to bring the discussion about quantum ontology, specifically regarding the question of whether there is a necessity to postulate the existence of something (in this case, th…Read more

We articulate a parallel in these lines, which view quantum objects either as bundles of properties or as nomological objects defined by physical law. The aim of the paper is to bring the discussion about quantum ontology, specifically regarding the question of whether there is a necessity to postulate the existence of something (in this case, the basic entities representing matter and interactions) underlying these two views. Our opinion is that yes, these ghost entities cannot, or should not, be disregarded in any interpretation.

What Can Quasi-Sets Contribute to Logic?
    Análisis Filosófico. forthcoming.
We analyze the contributions that quasi-set theories can make to the interests of logic. XVII Actas Congreso Monteiro
with Hernán Vázquez and Federico Holik
    Xvii Actas Monteiro 1. 2023.

In this paper we discuss the notions of adequacy and truth functionality in quantum logic from the point of view of a non-deterministic semantics. We give a characterization of the degree of non-functionality which is compatible with the propositional structure of quantum theory, showing that having truth-functional connectives, together with some assumptions regarding the relation of logical consequence, commits us to the adequacy of the interpretation sets of these connectives. An advantage of our proof is that it is independent of the number of truth values involved, generalizing previous works. We also show the failure of the adequacy of every Nmatrix that is a model of the non-distributive lattice of quantum propositions.

    with Federico Holik
In Jonas R. B. Arenhart & Raoni Arroyo (eds.), Non-Reflexive Logics, Non-Individuals and the Philosophy of Quantum Mechanics: Essays in honor of the philosophy of Décio Krause, Springer. 2023.
Mereology deals with the study of the relations between wholes and parts. In this work we will discuss different developments and open problems related to the formulation of a quantum mereology. In particular, we will discuss different advances in the development of formal systems aimed to describe the whole-parts relationship in the context of quantum theory.

As a quantum system transitions to classical behavior, within the framework of the classical limit, the propositions associated with the system shift from forming a non-distributive lattice to behaving Booleanly. This transformation of its associated logic can be analyzed both algebraically and semantically. Based on the latter and using the matrix formalism, this article presents some arguments that offer a new perspective on what happens in the classical limit of quantum mechanics. While presenting an alternative and complementary approach to the algebraic one, it establishes a way to link them through non-unitary evolutions.

Standard quantum logics are typically defined over the orthomodular lattice associated with Hilbert space, yet there is no consensus on how this structure should be interpreted logically or ontologically. Standard quantum logics are typically defined over the orthomodular lattice associated with Hilbert space, yet there is no consensus on how this structure should be interpreted logically or ontologically. This paper offers a unified perspective on these issues by combining an epistemological three-layer model for scientific theories with quantum set theory. We argue that quasi-set theory is best understood not as an alternative semantics for quantum logics, but as an ontological framework operating at a different epistemological level: the ontological one. From this standpoint, the distinctive non-classical features of quantum logic are explained by representational assumptions about identity and individuality, rather than by positing any direct revisions of the logical principles themselves.

A quasi-set theory without atoms and its application to a quantum ontology of properties

One of the main ontological challenges posed by quantum mechanics is the problem of the indistinguishability of so-called “identical” particles, that is, particles that share the same state-independent properties. In the framework of this philosophical problem, a quasi-set theory was formulated to provide a proper metalanguage to deal with quantum indistinguishability; this theory included certain Urelemente called m-atoms, representing essentially indistinguishable objects. In turn, over the last two decades, the Modal Hamiltonian Interpretation proposed an ontology of properties, totally devoid of objects, where quantum systems are bundles of instances of universal properties. Therefore, the original quasi-set theory, with its m-atoms, does not adequately reflect the structure of an ontology devoid of objects. The purpose to the present article is to introduce a new quasi-set theory that does not include atoms at all: elementary items correspond to properties and are also represented by quasi-sets, which can be only numerically different. The final aim is to apply this new quasi-set theory to the MHI ontology.

Motivated by research from linguistics and quantum logic, with strong implications for language, we propose certain applications and analyze some of their consequences.

We analyze two fundamental premises of the Kochen-Specker theorem: a) the functionality condition FUNC, which expresses the fact that not all observables are independent, nor are the values assigned to them, and b) the issue of the identity of projectors in different measurement contexts. We show that the non-deterministic semantics of Nmatrices and the theory of qsets Q− can complement each other by providing an appropriate semantics for the lattice of quantum projectors.

The purpose to the present article is to introduce a new quasi-set theory that does not include atoms at all: elementary items correspond to properties and are also represented by quasi-sets, which can be only numerically different. The final aim is to apply this new quasi-set theory to the MHI ontology.

Relating quasi-sets and rough sets: from quantum entities to AI
with Federico Holik and Décio Krause
International Journal of Theoretical Physics 64 (289). 2025.
At present, there are at least two set theories motivated by quantum ontology: Décio Krause’s quasi-set theory (Q) and Maria Dalla Chiara and Giuliano Toraldo di Francia’s quasi-set theory (QST). Recent work [Jorge-Holik-Krause, 2023] has established certain links between QST and Pawlak’s rough set theory (RST), showing that both are strong candidates for providing a non-deterministic semantics of N matrices that generalizes those based on ZF. In this work, we show that the new atomless quas…Read more

Recent work [Jorge-Holik-Krause, 2023] has established certain links between QST and Pawlak’s rough set theory (RST), showing that both are strong candidates for providing a non-deterministic semantics of N matrices that generalizes those based on ZF. In this work, we show that the new atomless quasi-set theory Q^− , recently introduced to account for a quantum property ontology [Krause-Jorge, 2024], has strong structural similarities with QST and RST. We study the level of extensionality that each theory presents, its relation to the Leibniz principle and the rigidity property. We believe that developing common features among these three theories can motivate common fields of research. By revealing shared structures, the developments of each theory can have a positive impact on the others.

Indistinguishability Right from the Start in Standard Quantum Mechanics
with Federico Holik and Cesar Massri
In Décio Krause & Jonas R. B. Arenhart (eds.), Individuals and Non-Individuals in Quantum Theory, Springer. pp. 45-69. 2025.
We discuss a reconstruction of standard quantum mechanics assuming indistinguishability right from the start, by appealing to quasi-set theory. After recalling the fundamental aspects of the construction and introducing some improvements in the original formulation, we extract some conclusions for the interpretation of quantum theory.

On the Assumptions Underlying KS-like Contradictions
with José Acacio de Barros and Federico Holik
In Décio Krause & Jonas R. B. Arenhart (eds.), Individuals and Non-Individuals in Quantum Theory, Springer. pp. 71-86. 2025.
The Kochen-Specker theorem is one of the fundamental no-go theorems in quantum theory. It has far-reaching consequences for all attempts trying to give an interpretation of the quantum formalism. In this work, we examine the hypotheses that, at the ontological level, lead to the Kochen-Specker contradiction. We emphasize the role of the assumptions about identity and distinguishability of quantum objects in the argument.

COMPLEXITY VALUATIONS: A GENERAL SEMANTIC FRAMEWORK FOR PROPOSITIONAL LANGUAGES
with Hernán Luis Vázquez and Federico Holik
Actas Del Xvii Congreso Dr. Antonio Monteiro. forthcoming.
A general mathematical framework, based on countable partitions of Natural Numbers [1], is presented, that allows to provide a Semantics to propositional languages. It has the particularity of allowing both the valuations and the interpretation Sets for the connectives to discriminate complexity of the formulas. A general mathematical framework, based on countable partitions of Natural Numbers [1], is presented, that allows to provide a Semantics to propositional languages. It has the particularity of allowing both the valuations and the interpretation Sets for the connectives to discriminate complexity of the formulas. This allows different adequacy criteria to be used to assess formulas associated with the same connective, but that differ in their complexity. The presented method can be adapted potentially infinite number of connectives and truth values, therefore, it can be considered a general framework to provide semantics to several of the known logic systems (eg, LC, L3 LP, FDE). The presented semantics allow to converge to different standard semantics if the separation complexity procedure is annulled. Therefore, it can be understood as a framework that allows greater precision (in complexity terms) with respect to formula satisfaction. Naturally, because of how it is built, it can be incorporated into non-deterministic semantics. The presented procedure also allows generating valuations that grant a different truth value to each formula of propositional language. As a positive side effect, our method allows a constructive proof of the equipotence between N and N^n for all Natural n.

Mathematical Models for Unstable Quantum Systems and Gamow States

We review some results in the theory of non-relativistic quantum unstable systems. We account for the most important definitions of quantum resonances that we identify with unstable quantum systems. Then, we recall the properties and construction of Gamow states as vectors in some extensions of Hilbert spaces, called Rigged Hilbert Spaces. Gamow states account for the purely exponential decaying part of a resonance; the experimental exponential decay for long periods of time physically characterizes a resonance. We briefly discuss one of the most usual models for resonances: the Friedrichs model. Using an algebraic formalism for states and observables, we show that Gamow states cannot be pure states or mixtures from a standard view point. We discuss some additional properties of Gamow states, such as the possibility of obtaining mean values of certain observables on Gamow states. A modification of the time evolution law for the linear space spanned by Gamow shows that some non-commuting observables on this space become commuting for large values of time. We apply Gamow states for a possible explanation of the Loschmidt echo.

An Algebraic Model for Quantum Unstable States
with Sebastian Fortin, Manuel Gadella, Federico Holik, and Marcelo Losada
    Mathematics 10 (23). 2022.
In this review, we present a rigorous construction of an algebraic method for quantum unstable states, also called Gamow states. A traditional picture associates these states to vectors states called Gamow vectors. However, this has some difficulties. In particular, there is no consistent definition of mean values of observables on Gamow vectors. In this work, we present Gamow states as functionals on algebras in a consistent way. We show that Gamow states are not pure states, in spite of their …Read more
In this review, we present a rigorous construction of an algebraic method for quantum unstable states, also called Gamow states. A traditional picture associates these states to vectors states called Gamow vectors. However, this has some difficulties. In particular, there is no consistent definition of mean values of observables on Gamow vectors. In this work, we present Gamow states as functionals on algebras in a consistent way. We show that Gamow states are not pure states, in spite of their representation as Gamow vectors. We propose a possible way out to the construction of averages of observables on Gamow states. The formalism is intended to be presented with sufficient mathematical rigor.
