This chapter shows how the particular notion of belief propounded by Jacobi implies a new conception of reason as a self-evident certainty that is immediately felt rather than based upon reflection. It is therefore distinguished from the mediated operations of conceptual understanding. However, it is impossible to translate the immediate certainty of belief (of existence) into a complete concept for the understanding (in knowledge). In other words, it is impossible to unify both extremes that characterize the very constitution of the human being: mind and heart, understanding and belief. Therefore, philosophy must always be rhapsodic and fragmentary, and never systematic or universal. The fundamental change in the norm of truth also implies a very different notion of the meaning of philosophy and the task of the philosopher.

O filósofo alemão Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (1743-1819) foi um dos grandes representantes no período pós-kantiano de uma concepção de filosofia como harmonia entre discurso filosófico e modo de vida, ação e palavra. Este trabalho pretende mostrar como ele se aproxima do significado originário de filosofia (amor à sabedoria) e daquele que foi considerado o primeiro filósofo: Sócrates. O não saber socrático aparece como resposta privilegiada, porque é um sábio não saber, isto é, reconhece a limitação do conhecimento humano e busca a sabedoria e virtude na conduta pessoal e na prática de vida. Jacobi aponta para o conflito da filosofia moderna consigo mesma, isto é, de uma filosofia que almeja a unidade e a plena coerência lógica e, com isso, se distancia do seu sentido mais próprio.
