Kate Nicole Hoffman

I'm an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the London School of Economics, and am also affiliated with the Global School of Sustainability. My research program is aimed at understanding and reimagining the human-nature relationship in a modern world characterized by environmental destruction. In reconceptualizing nature, I foreground reciprocity as the key to a healthier environmental future. My approach combines resources from environmental philosophy, animal studies, the sciences, community-engaged research, and a background in the performing arts, in order to creatively engage with issues in conservation, climate change, and animal ethics. These ideas have been put into practice in my policy and community-oriented work with institutions including the University of Cincinnati’s Center for Public Engagement with Science and the United Nations, and in places from the Galápagos Islands to Bwindi, Uganda. Each of these experiences has in turn informed and shaped my research.
