My research focuses on questions of normative conflicts in liberal states particularly with regard to law as a distinctive mode of political power and its interaction with democratic and individual sovereignty, human rights (esp. religious and conscientious freedoms) and public reason. In particular, I have been exploring ways of extending liberal legitimacy from its traditional concerns to a novel domain of the manner or mode of application and/or enforcement of laws, which I call modal legitimacy. I aim to continue developing modal legitimacy as a framework for effectively circumventing deep disagreements about justice and offering lateral regulatory solutions to various contemporary ethical debates and pressing socio-political problems such as those posed by emerging practices and new technologies.
Prior to pursuing academic research, I practiced law as a solicitor in Australia working in a range of corporate advisory, commercial and intellectual property and technology matters on which I also published and took on pro bono work for organisations helping disadvantaged groups, including those at risk of homelessness, refugees, and Indigenous persons.
