The recycling and reuse of wood have gained importance as strategies for reducing construction waste, lowering costs, and promoting circular practices in the built environment. This study evaluates the performance of recycled wood particle/epoxy composites (WPECs) for façade applications by prototyping panels produced from granulated degraded wood bonded with epoxy resin and coated with intumescent fire-retardant paint. The panels were design to meet standards for ventilated façade applications in accordance with EN 310-93 and ASTM D1037-06a and relevant building codes for facade cladding. Three replicates of each panel type were tested under controlled laboratory conditions to assess water absorption, equilibrium moisture content, capillarity, fire resistance, and mechanical performance. Moisture measurements were performed at immersion and drying intervals of 12, 24, 36, 72, and 120 h for four WPEC types manufactured with pine, beech, oak, and olive fibers. Statistical evaluation using SPSS (one-way and two-way ANOVA) confirmed significant species effects across most parameters. Results indicated that olive and oak WPECs provided the highest dimensional stability under moisture exposure, with olive additionally demonstrating superior compressive strength (35.45 MPa) and hardness (˂10,000 N). Pine and beech WPECs exhibited intermediate bending strength (≈10 MPa) and elasticity, while oak contributed stable swelling values despite lower strength. Fire resistance tests suggested relative improvements, although further standardized evaluation is needed. Collectively, olive and oak WPECs emerged as the most promising façade materials, combining durability, mechanical strength, and sustainability.

The Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon, characterized by higher urban temperatures compared to surrounding rural areas, is increasingly evident in Mediterranean cities like Tirana due to dense urbanization and reduced vegetation. This study assesses UHI intensity in Tirana through the integration of long-term climatic data and on-site measurements. Satellite-derived data from the Copernicus Climate Data Store, processed in Google Earth Engine, produced thermal maps for June–July 2025, revealing spatial temperature variations. Field measurements were conducted at nine representative sites, including suburban, historical, and highly urbanized zones, using a calibrated Testo 435 climate meter to record air temperature, relative humidity, and CO₂ levels at pedestrian height. Measurements were repeated on three different days during a short period at midday to capture thermal inertia. ANOVA results showed no statistically significant differences in temperature, humidity, or CO₂ levels across the monitored locations, indicating broadly uniform microclimatic conditions during the measurement period. Despite the absence of statistically significant differences in the ANOVA, measured temperature patterns indicated differences of about 2°C between urban and suburban areas, with new hotspots emerging in Paskuqan and the City of Students in addition to those in the city center.

This study investigates the thermal performance of a liquid wall panel in comparison with an argon-filled double-glass window, applied to identical prototype buildings located in Tirana, Albania. The analysis focuses on heat transfer mechanisms, including thermal resistance, thermal mass, energy storage capacity, transient thermal behavior, and associated CO₂ emissions. The study is based on a comparative analysis of two cubic prototype buildings (3 × 3 × 3 m) with identical insulated walls, floors, and terraces (U-value 0.40 W/m²K), differing only in the southern façade: an argon-filled double-glazed window (1.1 × 0.93 m, 10 mm argon cavity) versus a liquid wall panel (2.5 × 2.8 m, 80 mm water layer). Analytical heat-transfer calculations and simplified dynamic assessments were applied, including U-value estimation, thermal mass and energy storage calculations, transient heat conduction analysis, and heat-loss quantification. Additional considerations for the liquid wall included internal convection, evaporative cooling, and solar absorption. CO₂ emissions were estimated based on heating energy requirements and seasonal performance. The results indicate that the liquid wall provides higher thermal mass and improved thermal stability, reducing peak indoor temperature fluctuations and enhancing comfort. However, its lower thermal resistance compared to argon-filled glazing may increase heat losses, particularly in winter. In Tirana’s climate, argon-filled façades offer more consistent year-round insulation, whereas liquid walls can support passive solar heating if properly controlled to avoid summer overheating. Thermal performance of the liquid wall is influenced by system design, material properties, local weather, and maintenance factors. A hybrid strategy combining the thermal mass of a liquid wall with the insulating performance of argon-filled glazing is suggested to optimize seasonal energy efficiency and comfort. The findings provide insights for the design of liquid wall façades and highlight the potential integration of microalgae systems to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

This study investigates the thermal performance of a liquid wall panel compared to an argon-filled double-glass window in identical prototype buildings located in Tirana, Albania. The analysis considers heat transfer mechanisms, thermal resistance, thermal mass, energy storage, transient heat transfer dynamics and CO2 emissions. The study quantifies the thermal efficiency of each system using U-values and heat storage capacity, comparing their overall effectiveness in reducing heat losses and maintaining internal comfort. Water walls can contribute to increasing the indoor thermal comfort of the inhabitants. Temperature fluctuations in the indoor area as a result of water wall implementation will be lower, furthermore, indoor human comfort will be optimized. Implementation of water as an element in such type of facades can be risky due to impurities, transparency, visibility, and health problems. In order to evaluate its thermal performance and the impact in the indoor area, typical calculations will be applied, drawing conclusions. The thermal performance of the water wall is influenced by the design of the system, weather conditions, and materials used. The system can contribute to achieving a sustainable building certification. Water walls can be effective passing cooling strategies in certain climates, but it is needed to pay attention to the design, maintenance, and environmental conditions.

This paper is going to analyze two different urban and architectonic proposals located in the same area of “Zogu i I” Boulevard in the city of Tirana, an existing recently build building and a hypothetic intervention preserving as much as possible the existing situation. During the years 2013 up to 2023, it is observed a transformation in the area considering the GLP (General Local Plan) and DLP (Detailed Local Plan). According to GLP, the intensity of the construction for the area is revealed to be 4, the territory utilization coefficient is 45% and the total number of floors is 12. Due to the vision of the Municipality of Tirana, in order to increase the intensity of construction and density in the inner historical center of Tirana, the implemented building respects all the urban conditions considering the approved GLP and DLP. A hypothetic intervention based on the principles of historical preservation, respecting also the high, dimensions of the sections, and existing materials of construction of the existing buildings is proposed too. The proposal will help to better understand the urban tissue of the city of Tirana and to perceive the city in another manner. The historical analysis of the Boulevard and the transformation of the selected area during approximately 10 years are the best witnesses in order to judge the current situation.

This study explores the architectural and furnishing stylistics in the ceremonial and reception spaces of political leaders from various countries, including the USA, Japan, Turkey, the UK, the UAE, Malaysia, and Albania. Through a visual and semiotic analysis of seven representative interiors, the article offers a cross-cultural comparison between the aesthetics of East and West, modern and traditional approaches, and the political symbolism conveyed through the design of official spaces. The results show that the spaces of leaders are not only functional, but also visual tools for communicating national identity, cultural status, and personal style of power. The Albanian case is a unique postmodern, eclectic, conceptual style approach that breaks traditional forms, reflecting more a personal character and a growing institutional vision.

Unique properties of wood such as being porous and ability to absorb water and capillary action make it widely used in many applications. It is important to understand how different types of wood absorb water and move it through capillaries when using it in construction or home furniture. This article investigates the water absorption properties, moisture content, and capillarity actions of four common species of wood in Albania: Pine, Fir, Beech, and Oak. The experiment consists of partial and total immersion of the samples in water in order to measure capillarity action in the wood after 12, 24, 36, and 72 hours of partial immersion in water, and water content after the full submersion in water. The moisture content was checked through a specific device every time frame at the highest level of water capillarity. Meanwhile, water intake (absorption) was calculated using the appropriate formula during dry and wet phases, after the total submersion in water. The detailed comparative analysis of the results is elaborated using statistical software like IBM SPSS Statistics 27 and through the graphs elaborated in Microsoft Excel. Beech and Oak were found to absorb and retain more water during both immersion and drying, reflecting their higher moisture retention capacity. However, their low capillarity action suggests that water movement within these woods is limited, likely due to their denser cellular structures. On the other hand, Pine and Fir showed lower moisture retention overall but exhibited higher capillarity, indicating that water moves more easily through their structures. The study investigates the specific anatomical structures they possess and their compositions that determine these features and make them suitable for other purposes. Understanding these distinct properties is essential for choosing the right wood type for construction and design projects, particularly in fluctuating moisture levels.

The evolution of architectural design has been shaped by various cultural, technological, and socio-political factors throughout history. This paper explores the historical progression of architectural styles, focusing on the medieval city of Kruja, Albania, and its unique blend of Byzantine, Ottoman, and local architectural influences. Kruja, with its strategic location and rich cultural heritage, has long served as a crossroads of different civilizations, which has greatly influenced its architectural development. The study highlights Kruja’s role in preserving and adapting architectural heritage through centuries of foreign rule and political change by analyzing key design trends, structural techniques, and aesthetic elements and comparing them with broader Byzantine architectural principles. The paper examines notable structures within the city, such as the citadel, churches, and residential buildings, providing a detailed assessment of their historical, cultural, and architectural significance. Additionally, the study explores how these buildings reflect their time's social, religious, and military dynamics, offering insights into the resilience and transformation of Kruja's built environment. This research contributes to the understanding of how local traditions intersected with external influences to shape the architectural identity of one of Albania’s most iconic medieval cities.

Asbestos fibers have been widely used in the world but also in Albania. Being in contact with it is a daily risk to human life. Asbestos is also known as the silent killer. There are 2300 Asbestos based products worldwide. In our country the most widespread product is Eternite which has a content of 30% asbestos and 70% cement. Cement mixes very well with Asbestos fibers isolating them. During time cement collapse and losses, its physical properties by many factors including atmospheric ones causing the Asbestos fibers to expose themselves in the surrounding area. As a consequence of being microscopic, they penetrate to the human body endangering our lives. In the 60s and 80s in US, anti-Asbesto campaigns started for the first time, while in the EU it started very late in 1992 and unfortunately also during that period in developing countries this dangerous material was still being used endangering the lives of people. Every year over 100,000 people around the world die from incurable diseases caused by asbestos. In 2012, the use of Asbestos was strictly banned in European Union countries, including Israel.

The goal of this project is to compare the performance of a thermally insulated wall to that of a non-insulated wall. Parallel to the comparison, useful statistics will be generated in order to better understand the advantages of thermal insulation materials and the efficiency of the facility where they are used. Thermal insulation will be the primary focus of our efforts. Concrete examples will be treated in the city of Tirana in order to further enhance the study. Many changes in our country's design idea, including legal and technical aspects, have occurred in recent years. Energy efficiency has become a critical consideration in the construction of institutions. And is expected to be developed even further, thus raising interesting in making such research for this topic.

Thermal insulation is an important component in nowadays construction. Considering that before 90s Albania had been undeveloped enough, there was no needed information for thermal insulation’s importance, as well as missing materials and economic hardships to provide them. Consequently, many objects built during this time are not thermal insulated. Nowadays, its application is being more and more significant and convenient due to its benefits. In our country, a lot of attention has been paid to the application of thermal insulation, since 1990s. The main reason is the energy efficiency. Energy consumption is directly affected by its preservation. Moreover, it is crucial to mention the comfort that is offered. To give solutions to these housing challenges, is important to find the appropriate materials. During the latest years, more and more materials are highly standardized in contemporary expectations. One of these materials that is widely used in thermal insulation is expanded polystyrene. The benefits that the material has in terms of insulation, durability, moister resistance, and energy efficiency are important. In construction, insulation continues to function under a variety of temperature, humidity, and other conditions. The impact of expanded polystyrene in thermal insulation of buildings is the main subject of the study. This study should take in consideration the thermal insulation (EPS) applied in a building in the city of Tirana and another building where there is no application of thermal insulation. A comparative analyse between them should be applied by using a specific instrument, which calculate the U-value taking in consideration all layers of the wall and three components of temperature: indoor temperature, wall temperature and outer temperature.

Ecological and livable cities need an objective method to be jugged. This paper is in search of a method to determine the level of livability and ecology of the cities. Examples chosen for this methodology are: DongTang (Shanghai, China); Masdar (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate); Arco Santi (Arizona, USA); Chang Chun (China); Globe Town (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia). The results show that livable city should be in the pursuit of the overall development and ecological progress. Ecological city needs to properly make up for the weakness of city construction under fine ecological environment.

The article aims to provide insight into the water absorption, capillarity action, and material composition of various bricks and panels used as external coatings for buildings. The materials analyzed include silicate brick, red clay brick, normal clay hollow brick, concrete block, and EPS fibre cement composite wall panel. These types of bricks and panels are widely used in buildings in Albania, making their water absorption characteristics and hygroscopic moisture levels important factors to consider for future applications. The study is based on an experiment involving five material samples. Initially, the samples are dried and then partially submerged in water for 12, 24, and 36 hours. Afterward, they are removed from the water and dried indoors for 12, 24, and 36 hours. The moisture content is measured at three intervals for each sample category. The experiment also analyzes the capillarity action of water within the materials to evaluate their overall performance. Based on the results, red clay brick and normal clay hollow brick were identified as the most vulnerable materials due to their composition, high capillarity action, and significant water absorption. These findings are crucial for determining the suitability of these materials in construction practices.

Purpose: This article aims to highlight key indicators of residents' quality of life in a specific contemporary building in Kruja, Albania. Design/Method/Approach: A questionnaire with 30 questions was prepared for the inhabitance, and the Binary or Tobit probabilistic models were taken into consideration as part of the methodology, to conclude. The study will further analyze the implications of the inhabitants and their behavior in a specific contemporary building in the city of Kruja. It was examined the statistical significance of each variable (questions) in the models elaborated with EViews 8 software. The stable models that are associated with the “Log-likelihood” statistics were statistically significant at a significance level of p < 5%, or with 95% confidence, based on the model tests. Findings: The study concluded that the most statistically significant quality of life indicators part of the questionnaire is related to the typology of the apartments, methods of cooling during summer, present living conditions, apartment improvement, apartment orientation, and time spent in the living room. Furthermore, the study reveals that most of the quality-of-life indicators (part of the questionnaire) are not statistically important, so they will not be considered part of the models created in the article. The study reveals that increasing the living space and improving orientation is crucial to enhance the satisfaction of apartment inhabitants. When apartment sizes increase and orientation is improved, residents are more likely to opt for fans over air conditioners to reduce electricity costs and avoid installing additional cooling facilities during summer. They believe that better living conditions require larger apartments, additional water supply, increased electrical costs, and more time spent in the living room. The inhabitants also emphasize the importance of reducing moisture levels, decreasing window opening frequency, and increasing time spent with family. Interestingly, a one-degree improvement in summer cooling methods (e.g., switching from air blowers to air conditioning) corresponds to a one-degree improvement in winter heating methods (e.g., switching from gas to electricity), leading to a heightened need for clean electric heating. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of meeting the physical and spatial needs of the residents to enhance their overall satisfaction and quality of life. Urban policies significantly impact housing affordability, quality, transport systems, environmental sustainability, and social equity, affecting overall living standards and economic growth. Cities must create well-designed policies that consider residents' needs and study findings to ensure sustainable development and citizen welfare. Theoretical Implications: Gujarati’s (Basic Economics) theory was developed in the article. Practical Implications: This study will serve as an indicator to analyze the further improvements that might occur in the specific building (not just in the city of Kruja), considering the main quality of life indicators. Originality/Value: The article will serve as a base for further analysis of resident’s behavior and their social impact in the community in order to be aware of their needs for further developments in the construction field. Research Limitations/Future Research: The findings depend profoundly on the type of building the residents are living in. The research stream that can be inspired by the research is strongly related to mathematical regression models, statistics, and probability. Paper Type: Empirical

The paper examines the evolution of modernity concepts starting from the Renaissance to the present day, emphasizing the impact on architecture and urbanism. During the period of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, people framed an evolutionary notion of history and the concept of the modern associated with the contemporary, the new, and the fleeting emerged. This period connected modernity with the idea of relativity of truth as opposed to the absolute truth of the Middle Ages. In the 18th and 19th centuries, modernity clashed with tradition. This led to economic and political modernization. It also influenced artistic movements and cultural trends. The Industrial Revolution epitomized this period. It was driven by scientific and technological advancements. The paper discusses the objective and subjective perspectives of modernity, highlighting its dual nature in socioeconomic processes and personal experiences. Key thinkers like Habermas Weber and Baudelaire provide frameworks for understanding modernity's developments in science, art, and morality. The avant-garde movements influenced by Bauhaus, emphasized functionality. They also focused on rationality in architecture. However, critiques emerged, advocating the concept of unitary urbanism. This vision includes adaptable living spaces. It promotes an ever-changing urban environment, as exemplified by Constant's New Babylon. The Adorno's aesthetic theory criticized the industry's commodification of art and emphasizes art's utopian potential. Adorno's concept of mimesis and his critique of rationality and instrumental reason are explored reflecting the paradoxical nature of modernity. Finally, the paper contrasts the views of architects like Mies van der Rohe, Norberg-Schulz, and Eisenman. It concludes by reflecting on architecture's ongoing interaction with modernity. It emphasizes a balance between innovation tradition and the dynamic nature of human experience and social development.

Usually, modular construction involves the off-site manufacturing of standard building components in a factory before the components are assembled on the construction site. It is common to use terms like "prefabrication," "off-site construction," and "modular construction" interchangeably. The construction of modular constructions nowadays is flourishing all over the globe. The roots of the Albanian prefabricated constructions are extended for the first time around the 1970s. This paper will indeed analyze some recently built modular construction in Albania, considering and comparing it with international case studies. The demand for new construction in Albania is rising rapidly. Currently, the most common structures are cast-in-place beam-column designs, driven by both traditional mindsets and industrial capabilities. However, with Albania's economic growth, there is an increasing need for affordable, quickly built, and technologically advanced buildings. Modular construction, which assembles prefabricated modules on-site, offers a solution. This method aligns with bioclimatic design principles, reducing environmental impact and optimizing resources, marking a shift toward sustainability in the construction industry. The purpose of this article is to explore the potential integration of “modular construction techniques” with “bioclimatic design concepts” to create buildings that are environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and multipurpose by function. This study explores the use of modular construction techniques in conjunction with bioclimatic techniques to increase “building sustainability”. Combining these tactics encourages energy efficiency and a reduced environmental effect, making people far more resilient and weather-adaptable. The synergy between the two of them is necessary.

The purpose of this article is to compare several street typologies (distributed from center to suburb) in Tirana, Albania while taking into consideration pedestrian behavior on these pathways. The streets "Myslym Shyri," "Bllok," "Kombinat" (an extension of Kavaja's Street), and "Ana Komnena" (formerly "Fusha e Aviacionit") will be the primary focus of this study. The following variables will be taken into account such as pedestrian behaviors, street identity, dissatisfaction, walking distance when shifting to another zone, effects of greenery on pedestrians, time spent, points of interest, frequency, pavement quality, preferred walking periods, gathering places, utilization of benches, ambulant sellers, impact of vegetation and greenery, water basins, preference for public transportation, and road signs. Direct observations and a questionnaire will be used to determine the accurate information. The study should provide recommendations as guidance for municipalities and stakeholders to better understand the behavior of pedestrians in Tirana’s context. The streets that pedestrians frequent the most include the "Bllok" area and "Myslym Shyri" Street. The pedestrian resident population on "Myslym Shyri" street, which is dominated by people of all ages, including children, youth, and the elderly, has a slight advantage over the "Bllok" neighborhood. Furthermore, there is a wide variety of urban elements on Ana Komnena Street (formerly known as "Fusha e Aviacionit"). Meanwhile, the pedestrians on Kombinati’s street suffer a little bit more because of the traffic congestion and vehicle pollution.

The aim of this paper is to have a better architectonic insight over the museum of Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg in the city of Kruja. The history for which Albanians are proud will be the focus of this paper from its genesis until now, always seeing its architectural perspective. The castle as the last resistance of Albanians at the time of Turkish occupation will be analyzed; together with the mode of implementation of the new Museum Gjergj Kastriot Skenderbeu at the time of socialism. Who were the ideas of the ideologies of the time? What were the secrets of the building design? What were the secrets of the construction of the building? What were the motivations and inspirations of the architects and the design group? The paper will contain historical dating, direct interviews with architects of the building, and authentic architectural analysis of the building. Museum of Kruja is a work that belongs not only to Albanians but all of Europe and Balkan. Today it is one of the most visited works throughout the country.

The first signs of historical settlements in Tirana date back to the year 1614. These settlements and their road system belongs to the Ottoman city structure. Nowadays this historic northeast area of Tirana consists of a conglomeration of buildings that date back to different historical periods. A good part of these dwellings are informal ones, which damage the morphology of the area. This paper is considering a genuine historical basis to create an intervention model in this specific area of Tirana. The total surface of the area which is rigorously analyzed is 2.08 ha. Regulatory plans that will be considered for this analysis are the regulatory plans of 1917, 1921, 1937, 1953, 1980, up to today (the existing situation of the city of Tirana). The whole area will be analyzed including the typical road system; the typical structure of the dwellings, and the typical morphology of the area. All dwellings will be filed, according to historical dating situation and the existing situation. The current local general (PPV) plan provides a radical intervention in this area which seriously damages the historical heritage of the city of Tirana. This article aims and focuses on a territorial development model recovering it and not damaging it, (in contradiction with the current regulatory plan). The new model will be clearly detailed (up-to-level plans). The city of Tirana needs historical heritage and historical identity. How can one damage such treasure which the time took care so much to create and preserve? Such allusions are to be spoken out loudly!

The city of Kruja (Albania)contains three types of dwellings that date back to different periods of time: the historic ones, the socialist ones, the modern ones. This paper has to deal only with the historic building's typology. The questionnaire that is applied will be considered for the development of mathematical regression based on specific data for this category. Variation between the relevant variables of the questionnaire is fairly or inverse-linked with a certain percentage of influence. The aim of this study is to have better insights into the important role of building occupancy, people's lifestyle, economic level, and the quality of life of the residents in the inner medieval citadel, the physics characteristics, and the energy efficiency of the historical dwellings. The variables such as the number of residents, quality of life, the surface of the dwellings, heating instruments and time spent in the dwelling, current living conditions, monthly bills, level of satisfaction, restoration, and building improvements, interact with each other with probabilities with different positive or negative percentages.

Kruja is a middle-range city located in the center of Albania. The city of Kruja dates back to its existence from the V-VI century and extends to the city around the VI and IX centuries. It becomes the first capital of Albania in the XI-th century, specifically in 1190. This paper is going to deal with only two groups of buildings that are an integral part of the historical city of Kruja, the historical dwellings (XVIII century) and the socialist ones (1960-1985). This paper aims to analyze through linear regressions the relation between two parameters: moisture content and temperature of the indoor walls and floors of the historic and socialist buildings in the city of Kruja. Three types of historic dwelling and three types of socialist apartments have been analyzed, relatively uniformly oriented. The measurements with specific instruments are done on the same day, for three hours. The degree of reactivity is different for both groups of buildings. The historical buildings are more sensitive to temperature rise. They respond invers to it (as the temperature rise, the level of the moisture content decreases), with a higher coefficient than socialist ones, and appear to be more efficient in reducing the level of the moisture, despite the average moisture content being higher. This paper takes into consideration also the analysis of the materials of the construction for both categories. If the level of moisture is reduced, the buildings will be improved and the quality of life indicators of the inhabitance will be improved too.

Solutions to the urban problems of the future must assume the new reality of megacities. The inevitable technological progress must find a balance with the ‘bio-ecological' recovery of the natural environment. In the vertical bionic city, all these occur; bio intelligence and giant structures of the city are merged into a single. These structures try to survive by relying on working together as a single organism alive, as ants work in their nest. What makes them so efficient? What makes them work all together? What will be the future form of our building environment? Our future habitable environment is more likely to be in a vertical built form, against the horizontal city form. There are many reasons to believe that the new vertical cities will be more sustainable than the conventional horizontal cities. If this logic is accepted as the future scenario, then the question facing all planners and architects today is: Should we take this built form and make it more socially accepted, physically habitable, and human? This paper examines some of the key implications of this scenario, and the criteria for the design and planning of our future sustainable built environment as the vertical cities in the sky.

Gjirokastra’s buildings occupy a special place in the housing typology of Albanian popular dwellings in the feudal period. The “popular tower" is linked with its defensive character, therefore in many cases, it takes the name of a castle or defensive tower. This paper takes into consideration a typical example of the historical fortified dwelling in a well-known city of Albania, Gjirokastra. The methodology used in order to improve the way of thinking, the way of implementing, and the way of designing future dwellings is very related to the historical attitude of the dwelling. Based on the historical documentation, of the fortified dwelling a real analysis is performed according to the logic of modulations. The purpose of this paper is to create a methodology for future generations of architects in order to better engage in the design process, respecting the valuable architectural history. The modern dwellings of Gjirokastra historical-urban context must adopt the historical architectural elements, the historical manners of construction, the typical construction materials, the operational mode, and people’s lifestyle, in order to preserve the city's historical values via a modern touch. Socialist buildings in the city of Kruja (Albania) date back after the Second World War between the years 1945-1990. These buildings were built during the time of the socialist Albanian dictatorship and the totalitarian communist regime. A questionnaire with 30 questions was conducted and 14 people were interviewed. The interviewed residents belong to a certain area of the city of Kruja. Based on the results obtained, diagrams have been conceived and mathematical regression models have been developed which will serve as a base for drawing conclusions. The purpose of this study is to find a relationship that specifies the role of the inhabitants, the role of the dwellings, the physical-mechanical characteristics, and their energy efficiency, in order to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants. The independent variables interact with each other assuming positive or negative values depending on the probabilistic mathematical regression, giving different results based on the calculated data. The variables that co-exist among them are living space, quality of life, time spent at home, social interaction of residents, dwelling humidity level, dwelling orientation, satisfaction level of the inhabitants, dwelling improvements demand, and monthly electricity bills.

The city of Kruja dates back to its existence in the 5th and 6th centuries. In the inner city are preserved great historical, cultural, and architectural values that are inherited from generation to generation. In the city interact and coexist three different typologies of dwellings: historic buildings that belong to the XIII, XIV, XV, XIII, XIX centuries (built using the foundations of previous buildings); socialist buildings dating back to the Second World War until 1990; and modern buildings which were built from 1990 onwards. According to the questionnaires, the creation of mathematical models applied to each category will result in contradictory attitudes but also fairy ones based on different percentages. There are underlined 5 quality of life indicators(questions) from a total of 30 questions of the questionnaire, which are involved in mathematical regression and are statistically significant with a significance level p<5% (with a reliability of 95%), which interact for all three categories of buildings. The quality of life indicators: dwelling area, heating mode during winter, level of dwelling improvement, time spent in the dwelling, and monthly electricity payments, are the main actors who will be compared in order to draw conclusions. According to the statistical calculations trend, it is noted that the socialist buildings category does not directly participate in the debate between historic and modern buildings by means of the quality of life indicators (questions).

This paper determines the acoustic properties of external wall building materials composition. Noise pollution is one of the main pollutants nowadays but it is not considered of great importance in the construction field, despite some studies showing that greater acoustic pollution is produced by buildings under construction. The study consists of analysing two different types of buildings equipped with a different type of external masonry composition in terms of building materials. The buildings are located at “21 Dhjetori” street, Tirana, Albania. Furthermore, the case study area is treated as an area that consistently harvests noise. The impact of noise pollution on the existing building materials is going to be analyzed. Those milestones will provide information regarding the noise levels, a comparison of the actual level of noise production (outdoor and indoor areas), sound transmission, and sound diminution, as well as the implementation of acoustic materials in order to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants. The selected area has the highest norms of acoustic pollution in the city according to the studies implemented by Determination of acoustic properties of building materials is an important task gaining higher importance due to the demand for suitable construction materials, located in places with high levels of noise and places with heavy traffic, such as in urban areas. The aim of this paper is to display a comparative study of the actual noise levels generated by this area. It indicates the acoustic properties of the current building materials followed by a more suitable soundproof insulation.

This paper presents information about the moisture content and temperature level of brick walls in Tirana, Albania. The buildings whose walls have been studied were built in two different eras, throughout the twentieth century, and in more recent times. Given that during the second half of the twentieth century, Albania has been isolated from most of Europe and the West, and consequently the new architectural ideologies of the time, have not had the proper implementation there, the paper focuses on the characteristic types of bricks used in Albania, the functions for which they are used, and their effectiveness in achieving comfort (thermal, moisture content control) during the two time periods mentioned above. Depending on the functions bricks perform in the walls studied in this paper, the walls are separated into two main groups: Walls in which bricks have structural role (red silicate brick walls, white silicate brick walls) and walls in which bricks do not have structural role (concrete block walls, holed brick walls). For all the types of bricks mentioned above, indoor moisture content and temperature measurements have been performed in all four cardinal directions. For the walls in which the bricks have a structural function, moisture measurements have been performed in all the facades of the buildings, because moisture in the bricks of these types of buildings, being a very important factor, directly affects the structural performance of the elements. The aim of the paper is to show the differences in moisture and temperature levels of the walls of these buildings, depending on the engineering and architectural techniques used during the building process, the use of insulation, and the masonry composition.

The focus of the paper is the comparison between the two composite aluminum panels, respectively Alpolic and Durabond. The paper is going to explore their reaction when interacting with Tirana`s climatological factors and their tension strength through an experiment, in order to find out which panel displays the best performance. The construction urge is constantly evolving, especially in Tirana mostly because it is the main industrial and economical district of Albania. It is distinguished that innovative technology is being used in facades of the new buildings. One of the features that finds massive use in façade coating in the city is the application of ventilated facades equipped with external aluminum composite panels. This paper is going to deal with two buildings with different typologies of external coating, including the different types of aluminum panels. The analysis will focus on identifying each panel property such as tension strength; their respond to various external factors; their thermal conductivity; and their manufacturing companies which have been selected and produced. Within this paper graphics displays of the records will be included, offering concentrated information and a high level of reliability for both aluminum composite panels.

The aim of this paper is to make a comparison between different streets typology (with a distribution from center to suburb) specified in Tirana, taking into account the pedestrians' behavior on these streets. This paper will primarily focus on the following streets: “Myslym Shyri” street, “Bllok” area, “Kombinat” area, (an extension of Kavaja’s Street), and also “Ana Komnena” street (former “Fusha e Aviacionit”). The pedestrian actions, likeness, dissatisfaction, walking distance while transferring to another zone, greenery effects on pedestrians, time spent, points of interest, level of frequency, pavement quality, the favorite time for walking, meeting points, benches usage, ambulant sellers, vegetation and greenery impact, water basins, public transport preference, and road signs are some of the topics to be addressed in this paper. Determination of these data will be made by employing a questionnaire and direct observation. The study should provide recommendations as guidance for municipalities and stakeholders to better understand the behavior of pedestrians in Tirana. The “Bllok” area and “Myslym Shyri” Street are the most frequented streets by pedestrians. “Myslym Shyri” street has a slight edge over the “Bllok” area and is populated by different categories of pedestrians involving children, youth, middle ages, and the elderly. Ana Komnena Street (former "Fusha e Aviacionit") is not lacking any urban components. Meanwhile, the pedestrians on Kombinati’s street suffer a little bit more because of the traffic jam and vehicle pollution.
